MESSAGE FROM TRUSTEE

“Only the people who take learning, growth and skill development into their own hands will be tomorrow’s leaders”- Allli Worthington

My dear learned parents, educators and students,

The first term of the session has come to a successful end. With the passage of time, we need to constantly adapt ourselves as knowledge is in a state of constant flux. The knowledge of yesterday is getting old today and we are discovering the world every moment. Tomorrow will be different from what we know today. In these changing circumstances "learning, unlearning and relearning" have become not only imperative but also inevitable.

To keep up with these changes, Gajera Trust constantly tries to provide new platforms to learners to discover and invent themselves. Learners and parents should take advantage of it and construct a world where development is sustainable.

To create awareness about the concept of sustainable development and a green earth, the Trust recently organized two inter-school events—Maker’s Day and Echo Business. Maker’s day was a celebration of Mother Nature while Echo Business was an attempt to brainstorm sustainable business ideas. The idea was to convey the message that business is possible without damaging the environment. Learners from all the campuses took part in the skill development activities which were designed to promote a sense of responsibility and belonging towards the society and the environment. They spent time together at Vatsalyadham and Lakshmi Vidyapeeth at Sarigam co-designing science and business projects.

I must remind you that opportunities come to all. But using them to our advantage is in our hands. As mentioned above, people who learn, unlearn and relearn can lead the world. So, I beseech you to grab the opportunities you have for your development and move on. Shri Chunibhai H. Gajera Managing Trustee, Gajera Trust

FROM PRINCIPAL’S DESK

As I walk down the hallways of the school every day, I can hear the chatter of eager minds, the shouts of excitement from the victorious athletes, the thump of dancer’s feet & the sound of melodious voices harmonizing. The perpetual energy, movement & enthusiasm permeate the atmosphere at GGS. We are school with a difference. We value individualism, creativity and innovation and strive to nurture them in our students. The School’s genuine concern ensures student’s emotional growth along with intellectual excellence. This empowers them to develop their self-esteem, self- awareness and self-confidence. Sharing ideas, analyzing situations and expressing them confidently are essential skills which are honed here, through Experiential Learning. While studying at the school, the students will be groomed to become confident, articulate and enlightened young citizen, ready to step into global society with dignity, honour and integrity. We believe in giving our students strong values along with a set of wings which may carry them far and wide. In other words, our students are equipped to face the challenges of the rapidly changing world. We rear students who are creatively curious and strive to experiment & innovate new things on both academic and non-academic fronts. Our pedagogy is child – centric with emphasis on inquiry and project-based learning. We treasure dynamism and deem that one should be well prepared to adapt to the global scenario and work on his learning accordingly. This is perhaps why we have introduced a globally advanced curriculum.

Besides rigorous scholastic programmes, we seek to develop and nurture the different facets of a child. From academic to dance, theatre, music and a variety of sports, we focus on developing both, the mental and the physical abilities of a student. The activities provide holistic grooming to the student wherein the child is able to explore his true potential. Besides the usual procedural teaching, we persistently upgrade and update our teaching tools and techniques. From interactive teaching methods to a healthy teacher student relationship, we work around making studies as effortless as possible.

Today’s is an empowered, enlightened and enterprising nation. We wish to make it even more powerful with conscientious, smart and confident citizens who would make us proud of their multifaceted growth.

Regards, Mrs. Shweta Parihar Principal

Natural Resources

Natural resources are commonly referred to the resources that are a gift of nature. They are produced naturally without the intervention of human beings. Sunlight, water, soil and air are some of the examples of natural resources. These are available in abundance in nature. However, there are various other natural resources also that are not found as easily. These include minerals and fossil fuels. Many of the natural resources are present in abundance and are renewable. This means that these can be recycled and reused. However, there are many others that are non-renewable or take thousands of years to replenish. Many natural resources are depleting fast. This is owing to several reasons. One of the main reasons is the growth in population. The consumption of natural resources is on an increase continually owing to the rapid population growth. However, we still can have as much hopes as there are stars in the skies. We can follow the 3 R’s i. e. reduce, reuse and recycle in our day to day consumption.

Other than these fundamentals, we have to create awareness, promote afforestation and rain water harvesting. Strict bans are to be placed on hunting. We have to save energy. Natural resources are not only useful in their raw form but are also useful when they are employed to generate other stuff. Man has certainly made use of these resources in the best possible ways to make life better. It is high time we humans must stop wasting the natural resources, especially the non-renewable resources must be used wisely so that these are not depleted from nature.

Save Trees

What’s the one thing that you’d ask God to revive if you were given a chance to ask him? I’d ask him to revive the forests, rainforests, numerous extinct species and of course, the ozone layer. Yes I am very much concerned about the climate because we still have a long life to live. I fear that I’ll have no answer when my children would ask me why I did not do anything for the climate. Why, is spite of knowing that trees are critical for our survival, we went on cutting them down. Why we planted palm trees by cutting down entire rainforests just to make some more money. Why we burnt the Amazon rainforest trying to clear it for cultivation. These and many other questions will scare me, and are starting at me now. I think I’ll go and plant a tree somewhere right away.

Indian Education: What Ails It

I hate studying, but I love learning. It’s more important.

I was wonderstruck when I came to know that a majority of Indian engineers is unemployable, as per latest reports. I don’t understand why it’s so. Whenever we check the credit page of a software, be it Adobe, MS Office, CorelDraw etc. finding an is as almost sure as the day is day and the night is night.

But still we have not been able to bring revolutionary changes. Why? Are we a nation of unimaginative people who cannot chart their own territory? Forget about charting a new territory, we are considered as unemployable!

I think the education system needs a complete overhaul to bring changes. We need to stop seeing education as a means of getting a certificate or a job. It’s a life-long process which never ends. It includes skills values and sociability.

I believe it’s time to shift from theory to practice. Practical education should precede theoretical explanations. But wherever you go you’d find learners neatly seated in rows listening to a teacher downloading knowledge to the students which they regurgitate in the examination. That role has to change because we are not learning to pass an examination but to become effective members of the society. It’s a process. Discard the walls of the classroom. Take it out to the streets and the laboratory. We need to stop focusing on grades and certificates but on skills and knowledge. We have our own talents and skills and universities like Nalanda certify it. We had physicians who conducted surgery long before western medicine started. Plastic surgery was another miracle performed long back in India by a doctor. We do have innate skills. The trouble is, we are looking elsewhere, not within. A change in the education system can revive that lost faith and give us a new birth.

CONCLUSION In my opinion revoking article 370 & 35A will bring economic prosperity for J&K, now, more industries can be set up. The region will socially prosper by giving the feeling of one nation through single citizenship. But, the apprehension is whether development and investment will fill the valley with modern-day chimneys, whether effluents will kill the fresh greenish water, whether the downtown will give way to multi-storied malls. - Shankari Swaminathan (Grd X A)

Ganesh Chaturthi

With the advent of autumn, the season of festival has also arrived. And as per Indian tradition, the firs festival is Ganesh Chaturthi in which the boy God Ganesha, the son of Shiv and Parvati, is worshipped. As per tradition, Lord Ganesha is invoked before the beginning of any auspicious occasion. The Indians welcomed the festive season by celebrating a 10-day ganeshotsava. Orange and red dominate the streets these days as devotees throng the streets singing and clapping in praise of the boy God.

Legend has Ganesha was the scribe to have written the Mahabharata while Vyasa dictated. Before starting to write, Ganesha said that Vyassa should dictate non-stop and if he pauses, he will stop writing. So without any break, he wrote while Vyasa dictated for ten days at a stretch. After it was written, the lord was dehydrated and to rehydrate him, they put a layer of clay on his body and told him to dip in a river. It’s in commemoration of this feat that the festival goes on for ten days after which he is immersed in water.

The festival of became famous after freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak protested against the ban on worshipping in public. The deity is believed to be a remover of obstacles, vighneswara and the reigning deity of wisdom and intelligence. That is the reason he is invoked before the beginning of any auspicious occasion.

Parental Involvement & Academic Performance

The role of parental involvement affect in children's academic performance. Parental involvement and academic performance: On parental involvement and academic achievement, studies have shown to date that the two constructs seems to be positively related. Findings have demonstrated that parent’s involvement in the education of the children has been found to be of benefit to parents, children, and schools (Campbell, 1995). Rasinki and Fredrick’s (1988) concluded that parents play an invaluable role in laying the foundation for their children’s learning; Zang and Carrasquillo (1995) also similarly remarked that when children are surrounded by caring, capable parents and are able to enjoy nurturing and moderate competitive kinship, a foundation for literacy is built with no difficulty. Cotton and Wikelund (2005) ably capped it by asserting that the more intensively parents are involved in their children’s learning; the more beneficial are the achievement effects. Thus, it is believed that when parents monitor homework, encourage participation in extracurricular activities, are active in parents –teacher associations, and help children develop plans for their future; children are more likely to respond and do well in school.

Conclusion and discussion

Importance of parental involvement in children’s education, Some parents have the skills to foster both cognitive growth and achievement motivation. More importantly, parents who do not have these skills can readily acquire them. The research shows that when teachers and educational administrators are strongly committed to drawing parents into their children’s education, the academic outcomes for children can be very positive. It therefore becomes essential to understand what types of parental involvement have the most impact on children’s performance.

Women Empowerment: Winds of Change

When Patricio called his wife Kate ‘my furniture’ and ‘my horse’, no one took offence as it was how women were looked at in Elizabethan England. But say that to a progressive woman today, you will surely be shouted down dumb. As more and more women have braved out of the confines of the household breaking mental and societal limitations, women empowerment has become the buzzword now with an increasing number of them voicing their own opinions firmly and surely. This follows a financial independence which is the offshoot of women taking up diverse professions to prove that they are second to none in any respect. They are no longer those timid voiceless souls who squirm and hide behind a mile-long veil of customs and traditions.

With the removal of the veils have come newer challenges as they juggle between family and profession. The fiery leader in the boardroom becomes attender mother when her child demands her attention, an understanding wife when the husband comes home with his share of worries and stories. In this, they have proved to be better at handling multiples roles. This new woman lives not only in urban India but in rural India also. With financial independence, their assertiveness has gone up and one must but sit up and take notice. Microfinance and self-help groups have done a great deal to bring about this paradigm shift.

But nothing is further from the truth when we say that women are fully empowered. Go to Haryana and listen to village elders justifying rape; go to the remote villages of Maharashtra and you will see women prevented from getting an education; go to Uttar Pradesh and you will find girls mutilated by acid attacks for saying no. Even in urban India, women don’t speak up when they are groped in crowded bogies and buses. A recent report has marked India as the most dangerous country for women. On this matter we are ahead of Pakistan and Afghanistan. We still have a long way to go. Nevertheless, the progress is sure and concrete

What Is Leadership?

Isn’t it a wonder that lakhs of people across India came together on the call of a frail person as Gandhi to fight against the mighty British India? Isn’t it a wonder that 250,000 people listened to one hair-raising speech by Martin Luther King Jr but didn’t raise a single finger of violence on others? Did know that the government which was trying curb the agitation had to take help of Gandhi and King to maintain peace in their respective countries? We have a name for that wonder: Leadership. Yes leadership is the skill that has done wonders such as the above and countless others. How did they do it? How did they move mountains while they themselves were as frail or strong as us? Below are some of the qualities they exhibited.

1. Dedication, Commitment and Determination: No matter the hardships and hurdles, determination, commitment and dedication are the three pillars which can make the seemingly impossible possible. For instance, Jadav Payeng of singlehandedly planted a whole forest of 1360 acres earning himself the title Forest Man of India and the Padmashree in 2015. His secret: dedication, commitment and determination to do something for the environment. 2. Innovation: Once two opposing navies in China were waiting for the other to launch the attack as the attacker would have to move within the archers’ range. And one side was short on arrows which needed 100, 000 arrows in one night which was practically impossible to make. The leader of this side sent a few unmanned ship towards the enemy lines with a line attached to it so that it could be pulled back when needed. Seeing the ships approach in the night, the other side started shooting arrows. When the ships were full of arrows, they had all they wanted. This out of the box thinking won them the war. So effective leadership means innovation and creativity in solving problems too. 3. Decisiveness on the face of unforeseen events: Mahatma Gandhi took an unpopular decision to stop the Non-Cooperation movement when it went violent. This decisiveness has put him in the position where he is today. Without it he would have been known as a hypocrite who preaches but doesn’t practice his own teachings. 4. Being bold and leading: When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat for a white passenger, she took a bold step which ultimately led to the US Supreme Court making segregation illegal in 1956. And in the words of Churchill “If you’re going through hell, keep going.”

5. Clarity of Vision: When thinking about leaders in history who had a compelling vision and a huge talent to communicate it, Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. comes to mind immediately. He was a role model for saying what needed to be said to those who needed to hear it—no matter the cost. 6. Leader is a Mentor: Leaders should understand that they have a team to build without the help of which, goals are not achievable. They need to mentor their followers so that they themselves can step onto their shoes. 7. Taking Ownership: Leadership does not mean owning a big organization or leading a team of 200 to 2000 people. It is simply taking ownership. It is taking any task to a closure from the beginning till the end, without losing the focus.

There was a case, where an old woman, with a son, four daughters’ and son-in-law’s died. There was no one who would come forward to perform her final rights and rituals on her death. Ultimately, the last daughter who also took care of her mother during her old age did it. So, here it is known as ‘Ownership in Leadership’.

8. Setting an Example: Once a father and a daughter were travelling when they reached a red light. It was late and no traffic policeman was around. Everyone was jumping the light. But the father stopped and waited for the green to light up. When the son said that no one would see them if they jumped the light, the father said that he and his son would. So having integrity and setting an example set you apart as a leader. 9. Quick Decision Making: In the battlefield, split second decisions have to be made on the basis of which people may die or win. And for this no discussion is possible. Hitler lost a certain victory when he dithered about seizing Dunkirk allowing the trapped allied soldiers to escape. 10. Leadership is Being Fair and Unbiased: Impartiality is another hallmark of a good leader. Many a political leaders have lost their offices and careers nepotism and favoritism. The Indian National Congress’ epitaph was written by these two un-leader like traits.

IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC IN LIFE

In a 1962 study done by Indian botanist Dr TC of the Annamalai University, it was found that balsam plants grew by more that 20% when classical music was played to them regularly. In a recent study, it was found that mosquitoes attacked their hosts less when a type of music called dub step was played. If music has so powerful influence on inanimate plants and unthinking animals think of the effect it can have on humans.

1. For one, it can regulate the secretion of cortisol, a stress hormone which can induce weight gain. Well, you may not lose all those love handles, but it can definitely regulate the hormone, thereby minimizing the chances of you putting on weight. 2. Modern life throws a plethora of problems on us. And solving them demands creativity and innovation which can be boosted by listening to certain music regularly. 3. It can improve you communication skills by giving a boost to your verbal IQ. 4. It can help you eat less, and this definitely is a boon we cannot ignore. If you are one of those who have been trying to lose those extra flab, give music a chance. Who knows, you might get that great hour-glass body you’ve always been yearning for. 5. There are some special types of music that affects the brain’s alpha waves inducing deep meditation and relaxation. This type of music can definitely improve one’s concentration and learning ability.

 But please remember that music cannot be taken as a pill. It can be used as a therapy and the effects will show only after a few sessions. So try meditation with music everyday coupled with other music that can lift your mood and help you relax.
