ABSTRACT This bibliography on the geographical, water and geological information of Somalia was begun to fill a request for current information on that war torn state. This bibliography brings together selected citations from a variety of different cartographic, geographical, geological and hydrological resources and a number of specialized library collections. Most of the citations have location information on where these items can be located and either used on site, or borrowed through inter-library loan, or where copies of the items can be purchased from the originating source, or through commercial document delivery services. 15. Hadden 3/13/2007 2 Somalian Earth Sciences Introduction This bibliography on the geology, geography and earth sciences of Somalia was gathered from a variety of different abstracting, bibliographical and cartographical resources. They include citations from agriculture, botany, engineering, geology, geography, medical, military science, soils, transportation and other subject resources. These citation resources are provided by a number of scientific societies, such as the American Geographical Society; from government resources, such as the Defense Technical Information Center; non-governmental organizations such as the United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO); and from commercial databanks such as GeoRef, WorldCat and GeoBase. Many unique citations were collected from the catalogs and resources of major research libraries, such as the Library of Congress and the US Geological Survey Library. Within this bibliography, the article retrieval information is given as much as possible. These include specific ISSN, ISBN, OCLC and Library of Congress numbers that allow the electronic borrowing or copying of these items through library networks. Alternately, the citations also include information on acquiring these items through document delivery companies and commercial services. Very often, scientific publications in less developed countries are not published in large numbers, and it is very difficult to retrieve reports or maps more than even a few years old. This bibliography is intended to be a resource for those scientific citations on Somalia that can still be retrieved. Within these citations are many variations in spelling and place names. Many scientific and cartographic investigations were done in Cushitic, European and Semitic languages, such as Arabic, English, French, Italian and Somali. Thus, the same name may be spelled differently according to the language(s) used. Variations on single and doubled consonants (geminated consonants) and single and doubled vowels (diphthongs) are common. Mogadisco, Mogadiscio, Mogadishu, Mogadischu and Muqdisho are all variations on the name of the capital city. The river Juba can be spelled Jubba, Juba, Giuba, etc., according to the language used, as can the port city of Chisimaio, Chisimayo, Kismayo, Kisimayo, Kisymao, etc. So any search for authors, place names and locations in this bibliography should take into account spelling variations. • (I) the SOCIAL STRUCTUBE of Soumn SOMALI TRIB by Virginia I?
    (i) THE SOCIAL STRUCTUBE OF SOumN SOMALI TRIB by Virginia I?lling A thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of London. October 197]. (ii) SDMMARY The subject is the social structure of a southern Somali community of about six thousand people, the Geledi, in the pre-colonial period; and. the manner in which it has reacted to colonial and other modern influences. Part A deals with the pre-colonial situation. Section 1 deals with the historical background up to the nineteenth century, first giving the general geographic and ethnographic setting, to show what elements went to the making of this community, and then giving the Geledj's own account of their history and movement up to that time. Section 2 deals with the structure of the society during the nineteenth century. Successive chapters deal with the basic units and categories into which this community divided both itself and the others with which it was in contact; with their material culture; with economic life; with slavery, which is shown to have been at the foundation of the social order; with the political and legal structure; and with the conduct of war. The chapter on the examines the politico-religious office of the Sheikh or Sultan as the focal point of the community, and how under successive occupants of this position, the Geledi became the dominant power in this part of Somalia. Part B deals with colonial and post-colonial influences. After an outline of the history of Somalia since 1889, with special reference to Geledi, the changes in society brought about by those events are (iii) described.

With the exception of a few pioneering studies, Italian rule and its impact on Ethiopia is given marginal importance. The present thesis confines itself to one specific key area of Italian policy - land. Search for an outlet to settle Italy’s excess population and deploy its surplus capital, had sustained Italian imperialist ambitions from the 19th century and justified the conquest of Ethiopia against quasi universal international opposition.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 RESUME Modern Somali poetry is manifested in the genre called heello. It is at once an expression and outgrowth of a new period of history, and a potentially strong influence on chan ing Somali society.- This thesis is an attempt to describe th development of this poetry, its structure and imagery, and th social and historical1 setting from which it arose. The characteristics of form and content of the heello ar from four major sources. Firstly, it is within a traditional group of genres, here called the Family of Miniature Genres, that the history of the modern poem begins, especially with t last miniature poem to develop: the belwo. Secondly, the modern poem has acquired characteristics from Somali classical poetry. Furthermore, it has borrowed” some features from abroad. And lastly, it has acquired some its structure from its own development through time- An hist ical approach^ beginning with the belwo, is a fruitful manner in which to view the question.

Bull. Org. mond. Santg 1956, 14, 1-117 Bull. Wld Hith Org. BILHARZIASIS SURVEY IN BRITISH SOMALILAND, ERITREA, ETHIOPIA, SOMALIA, TIE SUDAN, AND YEMEN* NAGUIB AYAD, M.D., B.M.S. Consultant, WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, Alexandria, Egypt Deputy Director, Bilharziasis Control Section, Egyptian Ministry of Health Manuscript received in February 1955 SYNOPSIS A survey of bilharziasis and its vectors in certain countries of north-east Africa and of the Red Sea area, carried out between December 1951 and February 1952, is described within the frame- work of a review of the somewhat scattered and incomplete informa- tion already available on this subject in the literature. Clinical inquiry and microscopic examination of random stool and urine specimens were used to obtain data on the endemicity of the disease, and many samples of suspect mollusc vectors of Schistosoma haema- tobium and S. mansoni were collected from varied habitats and sub- sequently classified. A section on malacology discusses the difficulties of systematization of the African freshwater snails. The need for a fuller investigation of human incidence, particularly in the inland and highland districts, is stressed, and the author suggests measures for the control of vectors, sanitation of water channels, prophylaxis of the disease, health education and legislation, and biological and chemical research. He draws the conclusion that the future economy of these countries depends upon the joint efforts of the physician, the malacologist, the chemist, and the engineer in controlling the spread of bilharziasis from the highly endemic areas to regions where its incidence is still slight. Between December 1951 and February 1952, the author visited British Somaliland, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, the Sudan, and Yemen, as part of the WHO-sponsored bilharziasis survey programme initiated in 1949.

Imagining the Nation, Crafting the State: The Politics of Nationalism and Decolonisation in Somalia (1940-60) Annalisa Urbano Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2012 Imagining the Nation, Crafting the State Abstract The thesis offers a first-hand historically informed research on the trajectory of the making of the post-colonial state in Somalia (1940-60). It does so by investigating the interplay between the emergence and diffusion of national movements following the defeat of the Italians in 1941 and the establishment of a British Military Administration, and the process of decolonisation through a 10-year UN trusteeship to Italy in 1950. It examines the extent to which the features of Somali nationalism were affected/shaped by the institutional framework established by the UN mandate.

Kendie, P.hD Abstract: Prairie View A&M University The 46-year-old dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia has been commonly called a “border dispute.” Contrary to that description, it may be more appropriate to portray it as a dispute that has been driven principally by economic interests and by the effort to control scarce resources. Among these interests and resources are the following: the struggle for water wells and fresh grazing pastures for nomads; the insecurity Somalia feels about the Juba and the Wabi Shibeli rivers, as their sources are in Ethiopia; the discovery of gas and oil in the Ogaden; Somalia’s challenging geographic shape that makes communication between the north and the south cumbersome in transport terms, in the sense that a road through the Ogaden could reduce the distance by 50%; and Ethiopia’s long standing trade needs for outlets to the sea through Somalia's Indian Ocean ports.
