The Situationists stand askew to both these terms and that is why they are of interest to us. The Situationists ingested Marx, his dialectics, his commitment to revolution, his searing tones of critique and caustic prose, his chiasmic formulations. But they were not Marxologists, defenders of the faith. Marxism came back to life in their raging analyses. They were interested in slamming into their moment, making it liveable, handling Marx as if handling stolen goods. And, as for culture, that was something they made, destroyed, rated above all else and despised, sometimes sequentially, sometimes all at the same time. They were more aesthetic than the aesthetes, more luxurious than the deluxe-edition types. But in a way that junked, mocked, remixed or scorned the culture of the past and present. They paid homage to a few and upset more. The Situationists remain a resource and a rebuke to any efforts to think and act as revolutionaries in the field of culture. Despite their critique of recuperation, they provide a touchstone for attempts to give cultural expression to revolutionary ideas – even after the designation of Guy Debord’s archive as a ‘National Treasure’ of France, when it was acquired, in 2011, by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. History may have rendered positive the most negative of critics and the movement he mobilized, but their successes and failure, which is a social one, still provide many pertinent lessons. The Situationists were the most cultured of all and the most revolutionary. It was the force-field between these two aspects that powered their thought. Even when art was ostensibly abandoned in favour of theoretical-political analysis, it shadowed the political theory as a – or its – negative image. Too frequently the counter-parts of art and politics have been broken apart in interpretations of the Situationist legacy: artists alight on the aesthetic aspects, the avant-garde techniques, the questions of recuperation of culture; politicos debate the questions of form, the analysis of the state, the legitimacy or not of the vanguard party. Sometimes the praxis and theory of the Situationists floats free of the demands of its moment, in dehistoricized accounts. Frances Stracey’s Constructed Situations holds it all in play and, more than that, it observes the shingling of aesthetics in politics and sets everything firmly in specific ‘constructed situations’ that constitute Situationist theoretical practice. These collective acts of counter-cultural and political assault include photo-graffiti, industrial painting, the Jorn–Debord collaboration Mémoires, the first and only Situationist group exhibition titled Destruktion af RSG-6, held at the Galerie EXI in Odense, Denmark in June 1963, writing and editing a journal, inventing strategies for evading the archive, and theorizing and advocating riots. The scintillating moments of cultural and revolutionary collaboration that comprise the viii | construCted situations Stracey T02909 00 pre 8 02/09/2014 11:39 chapters here explore the Situationists’ mode of ‘phenomeno-praxis’, in which art and politics are united in a lived event. The ideas in this book began life as a thesis at University College London, titled ‘Pursuit of the Situationist Subject’. They evolved substantially after the thesis’ submission in 2001, as Stracey, who had studied art and had worked as a medical photographer and librarian, spent several years turning parts of the chapters into journal articles or contributions to edited volumes. In 2005, she reconceived the thesis as a book organized around the notion of ‘constructed situations’. She managed to complete a full draft of the book before dying of cancer in November 2009. The fact that it has taken some time for the book to be published is no disadvantage.

thresholds 41 Spring 2013, 32-45 OCCUPY THE FUN PALACE BRITT EVERSOLE During the 1968 holiday season, a dozen people and one Santa Claus impersonator stormed Selfridges, a Daniel Burnham-designed department store on London’s posh Oxford Street. Confused customers gathered when Father Christmas and his helpers pulled goods from the shelves and began giving them away. When clerks intervened, a melee erupted, arrests ensued, and police were forced to make crying children return unpurchased toys and candy. In the aftermath, Londoners found leaflets bearing an anti-consumer diatribe against the holidays as the palliative to another year of pointless labor ending in unaffordable shopping and perfunctory celebration (Figure 1). Chiding Britons that they did not deserve Christmas because they had not worked hard enough, this year’s festivities were a “punishment…a duty to be cheerful, to play the fool, let down your hair as soon as they switch on the lights and raise the curtain.” A call to arms ended the invective: Let’s smash the whole great deception. Occupy the Fun Palace and really set the swings going. Grab the gifts and really give them. Light up Oxford Street and dance around the fire.1 This vicious potlatch was one of many guerilla actions by the English Situation- ist-inspired group King Mob, named after the 1780 Gordon Riots in which revolt- ing prison inmates freed themselves by the authority of “His Majesty, King Mob.” During the late 1960s, they assaulted British culture with pranks, profane leafleting and poster campaigns, and by vandalizing buildings and infrastructure with erudite phrases, the most famous being a thesis on an Underground embankment: SAME THING DAY AFTER DAY–TUBE–WORK–DINER [sic]–WORK–TUBE–ARMCHAIR–T.V.– SLEEP–TUBE–WORK–HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU TAKE–ONE IN TEN GO MAD– ONE IN FIVE CRACKS UP.

  • Drew Hayden Taylor, Native Canadian Playwright in His Times
BRIDGING THE GAP: DREW HAYDEN TAYLOR, NATIVE CANADIAN PLAYWRIGHT IN HIS TIMES Dale J. Young A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2005 Committee: Dr. Ronald E. Shields, Advisor Dr. Lynda Dixon Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Jonathan Chambers Bradford Clark © 2005 Dale Joseph Young All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Ronald E. Shields, Advisor In his relatively short career, Drew Hayden Taylor has amassed a significant level of popular and critical success, becoming the most widely produced Native playwright in the world. Despite nearly twenty years of successful works for the theatre, little extended academic discussion has emerged to contextualize Taylor’s work and career. This dissertation addresses this gap by focusing on Drew Hayden Taylor as a writer whose theatrical work strives to bridge the distance between Natives and Non-Natives. Taylor does so in part by humorously demystifying the perceptions of Native people. Taylor’s approaches to humor and demystification reflect his own approaches to cultural identity and his expressions of that identity. Initially this dissertation will focus briefly upon historical elements which served to silence Native peoples while initiating and enforcing the gap of misunderstanding between Natives and non-Natives. Following this discussion, this dissertation examines significant moments which have shaped the re-emergence of the Native voice and encouraged the formation of the Contemporary Native Theatre in Canada. Finally, this dissertation will analyze Taylor’s methodology of humorous demystification of Native peoples and stories on the stage.

  • Realization and Suppression of Situationism
Library.Anarhija.Net The Realization and Suppression of Situationism Bob Black “For our time — I think every statement should be dated” — Alexander Trocchi1 “The Situationists, whose judges you perhaps imagine yourselves to be, will one day judge you. We are waiting for you at the turn- ing.” On this vaguely threatening note Maurice Wyckaert, speaking for the Situationist International, wrapped up a rant at London’s In- stitute for Contemporary Arts in 1961. One baffled member of the audience (or was he a shill?) asked just what was “Situationism” all about? Guy Debord arose to announce, in French, “We’re not here to answer cuntish questions,” whereupon the Situationists walked Bob Black out. The Realization and Suppression of Situationism 1 Retrieved on April 22, 2009 from primitivism.com Alexander Trocchi, Cain’s Book (New York: Grove Press, 1960), 59. This book — an autobiographical novel of heroin addiction — is very unlike other Sit- uationist texts in its Beat affinities (Internationale Situationniste No. 1 [1958], for lib.anarhija.net instance, complaining that “the rotten egg smell exuded by the idea of Goden- velops the mystical cretins of the American ‘Beat’ Generation”). After resigning In a publicity brochure issued several years ago, the ICA recalled the event as “a conference whose chairman was stone deaf, whose main speaker spoke no English, and whose participants denied that the meeting existed.” (Actually they only denied that its topic ex- isted, since the Situationists defined “Situationism” as a nonsense word coined by anti-Situationists.) The ICA, as we shall see, has taken its revenge. The Situationist International (1957–1972) was an international but Paris-based formation which recreated the avant garde tradi- tion on a high plane of intelligence and intransigence.

class wargames Class Wargames ludic Ludic subversion against spectacular capitalism subversion Why should radicals be interested in playing wargames? Surely the Left can have no interest in such militarist fantasies? Yet, Guy Debord – the leader of the Situationist International – placed such importance on his class invention of The Game of War that he described it as the most significant of against his accomplishments. wargames Intrigued by this claim, a multinational group of artists, activists and spectacular academics formed Class Wargames to investigate the political and strategic lessons that could be learnt from playing his ludic experiment. While the ideas of the Situationists continue to be highly influential in the development of subversive art and politics, relatively little attention has been paid to their strategic orientation. Determined to correct this deficiency, Class Wargames is committed to exploring how Debord used the capitalism metaphor of the Napoleonic battlefield to propagate a Situationist analysis of modern society. Inspired by his example, its members have also hacked other military simulations: H.G. Wells’ Little Wars; Chris Peers’ Reds versus Reds and Richard Borg’s Commands & Colors. Playing wargames is not a diversion from politics: it is the training ground of tomorrow’s cybernetic communist insurgents. Fusing together historical research on avant-garde artists, political revolutionaries and military theorists with narratives of five years of public performances, Class Wargames provides a strategic and tactical manual for overthrowing the economic, political and ideological hierarchies of early- 21st century neoliberal capitalism. The knowledge required to create a truly human civilisation is there to be discovered on the game board! richard ludic subversion against barbrook spectacular capitalism Minor Compositions An imprint of Autonomedia Front cover painting: Kimathi Donkor, Toussaint L’Ouverture at Bedourete (2004).
