The literature on the birds of this area is excessively scattered, and one of the functions of this review paper is to provide bibliographic references to recent litera- ture of the various species, in order to make it more readily available to new students. Another object of this paper, as of the previous install- ments of this series, is to indicate intraspecific trends of geographic varia- tion in the Bismarck Archipelago and the Solomon Islands and to state for each species from where it colonized northern Melanesia. Such in- formation is recorded in preparation of an eventual zoogeographic and evolutionary analysis of the bird fauna of the area. LOOK WHAT SANDOWN RECREATION IS UP TO NOW! HULA DANCE LESSONS!!! If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the past 15 months or so it’s that WE’VE MISSED HAVING SOME FUN!!!! That’s why Sandown Recreation is venturing into uncharted waters, mixing things up, and bringing you a new summer adventure. Come join the fun! Hawaiian Hula is one of the last indigenous narrative or story-telling dances left on the planet. Every move has a special meaning. This is your chance to learn to tell the stories of Hawaiian flowers; places; gods; goddesses and royalty in song and dance! We’ve teamed up with instructor Nancy Griffin who has studied Polynesian culture and dances with the best Kumu Hula (Master Hula teachers) on the Mainland and in Hawaii for more than 30 years. She teaches and performs Hawaiian Hula, Tahitian, Maori, and Samoan dance. Nancy will be teaching a class on Monday evenings for 6-weeks beginning June 7 – July 1 (no class on July 5th) from 6:30 – 7:30 PM at the Ed Garvey Recreation Facility on Pheasant Run Drive. The class is suitable for anyone age 16 and up with all levels of dancers welcome whether you’ve had prior dance experience or not. Come alone or bring a friend…this journey will be fun! For class, students should wear non-restrictive (but not baggy) clothing and plan to dance barefoot (soft soled shoes are permitted if you need the support). You’ll want to bring a notebook for jotting down important info and translations from the Hawaiian language. -
Rotuma: Interpreting a Wedding
ROTUMA: INTERPRETING A WEDDING Alan Howard and Jan Rensei n most societies there are one or two activities that express, in highly condensed ways, what life is all about for its members. IIn Bali it is the cockfight,1 among the Australian Aborigines the corroboree, in Brazil there is carnival. One might make a case for the Super Bowl in the United States. On Rotuma, a small iso lated island in the South Pacific, weddings express, in practice and symbolically, the deepest values of the culture. In the bring ing together of a young man and young woman, in the work that goes into preparing the wedding feast, in the participation of chiefs both as paragons of virtue and targets of humor, in the dis plays of food and fine white mats, and in the sequence of ceremo nial rites performed, Rotumans communicate to one another what they care about most: kinship and community, fertility of the peo ple and land, the political balance between chiefs and common ers, and perpetuation of Rotuman custom. After providing a brief description of Rotuma and its people, we narrate an account of a wedding in which we participated. We then interpret key features of the wedding, showing how they express, in various ways, core Rotuman values. THE ISLAND AND ITS PEOPLE Rotuma is situated approximately three hundred miles north of Fiji, on the western fringe of Polynesia. The island is volcanic in origin, forming a land area of about seventeen square miles, with the highest craters rising to eight hundred feet above sea level. -

Goetzfridt, University of Guam There has been an interesting as well as a tired dichotomy of thinking about “voyaging” in the Pacific. Interesting because of questions concerned with the ability of voyagers to control their efforts across vast areas of a watery space in order to reach land and, in the settlement eras, to successfully prosper and possibly engage in return voyages of communication. These speculations, attempts at documentation through the paucity of European references to these voyagers, and the practical experiments undertaken by David Lewis and Ben Finney are all concerned with what must be seen as incredible journeys, regardless of how they were actually achieved. The thinking has been tired because of a habitual practice in all kinds of literature, both scholarly and popular, to assign an either/or identity to “voy- aging.” As we are occasionally told in comments usually tucked away in the bowels of some greater concern with modernity, this voyaging, for all its illus- trious past, is now “dead.” And as such, it wallows in the past. It is only the romantics, the individuals pricked by a yearning for the spectacular, who resist recognizing this foundational fact of Pacific life. from Stories of the Southern Sea, by Lawrence Winkler Published as a Kindle book on December 26, 2013 Fara Way Rotuma “Their bodies were curiously marked with the figures of men, dogs, fishes and birds upon every part of them; so that every man was a moving landscape.” George Hamilton, Pandora’s surgeon, 1791 The whole scene was a moving landscape, directly under us, just over two hundred years after Captain Edwards had arrived on the HMS Pandora. He had been looking for the Bounty. We would find another. The pilot of our Britten-Norman banked off the huge cloud he had found over six hundred kilometers north of the rest of Fiji, and sliced down into it sideways, like he was cutting a grey soufflé. Nothing could have prepared us for the magnificence that opened up below, with the dispersal of the last gasping mists. A fringing reef, barely holding back the eternal explosions of rabid frothing foam and every blue in the reflected cosmos, encircled every green in nature. On the edge of both creations were the most spectacular beaches in the Southern Sea. Captain Edwards had called it Grenville Island. Two hundred years earlier, it was named Tuamoco by de Quiros, before he went on to establish his doomed New Jerusalem in Vanuatu. But that was less important for the moment. We had reestablished level flight, and were lining up on the dumbbell- shaped island’s only rectangular open space, a long undulating patch of grass, between the mountains and the ocean. Hardly more than a lawn bowling pitch anywhere else, here it was the airstrip, beside which a tiny remote paradise was waving all its arms. -

Rotuman Identity in the Electronic Age
ALAN HOWARD and JAN RENSEL Rotuman identity in the Electronic Age For some groups cultural identity comes easy; at least it's relatively unprob- lematic. As Fredrik Barth (1969) pointed out many years ago, where bounda ries between groups are fixed and rigid, theories of group distinctiveness thrive. Boundaries can be set according to a wide range of physical, social, or cultural characteristics ranging from skin colour, religious affiliation or beliefs, occupations, to what people eat, and so on. Social hierarchy also can play a determining role, especially when a dominating group's social theory divides people into categories on the basis of geographical origins, blood lines, or some other defining characteristic, restricting their identity options. In the United States, for example, the historical category of 'negro' allowed little room for choice; any US citizen with an African ancestor was assigned to the category regardless of personal preference. Although in Polynesia social boundaries have traditionally been porous, cultural politics has transformed categories like 'New Zealand Maori' and 'Hawaiian' into strong identities, despite more personal choice and somewhat flexible boundaries. In these cases, where indigenous people were subjugated by European or American colonists, a long period of historically muted iden tity gave way in the last decades of the twentieth century to a Polynesian cul tural renaissance that has been accompanied by a hardening of social catego ries and a dramatic strengthening of Maori and Hawaiian identities. Samoans also have a relatively strong sense of cultural identity, but for a different reason. In their case, identity is reinforced by a commitment to fa'asamoa, the Samoan way of life. -

Rotuman men cultural preservation engaged in the pearl-diving industry in the Torres Strait in the late nineteenth cultural identity century, who married local women, were among the first documented migrants to Australia Australia. Following World War II, a steady stream of Rotumans, many of them New Zealand married to white spouses, emigrated and formed communities in urban settings like Sydney, Brisbane, Auckland and elsewhere, where they have been remarka bly successful. Their very success in the workforce, along with high rates of inter marriage and dispersed households, makes getting together a challenging prospect, requiring strong motivation, effective leadership, and a commitment to preserving their Rotuman cultural heritage. Tire island of Rotuma is located on the western fringe of Polynesia, about 465 kilometres north of the main islands of Fiji. Politically, Rotuma was governed as part of the Colony of Fiji since its cession to Great Britain in 1881 and has been part of Fiji since the country's independence in 1970. Although its linguistic affiliations remain somewhat of an enigma (see Grace 1959; Schmidt 1.999), the culture of the island reveals a closer affinity with Samoa, 191 Jan Rensel |Alan Howard Tonga, Futuna and Uvea than with Fiji or the Melanesian islands to the west.
