3Germplasm status in USDA stations after the expedition was completed is shown as reported in David Fairchild’s collection books. “C.F.” stands for the USDA station of Chapman Field, Miami. 4As Caesalpinia decapetala (Roth) Alst. in Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012). 5We did not found this name in the consulted taxonomic literature. 6David Fairchild’s record for plant collection 3638 was not included in his plant collection books. 7Accession 99570 was reported as collected in March 1932; however Fairchild 2794 was collected in 8-Feb-1932. 8Fairchild’s collection book entry is for Haematoxylum campechianum L. (Fabaceae) and not for Guaiacum officinale. 9We did not found this name in the consulted taxonomic literature. 10Fairchild 2731 is for St. Lucia, but the herbarium label reports the specimen for St. Eustatius. 11As Merremia umbellata (L.) Hallier f. in Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012). 12As Demonium trifolium (L.) DC. in Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012). 13As Peperomia glabella (Sw.) A.Dietr. in Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012). 14As Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC. in Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012). 15As Vigna adenantha (G. Mey.) Marechal, Mascherpa & Stainier in Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012). 16There is conflicting information regarding the identity of this specimen. It has five different identifications and four labels. The official label of the expedition clearly states that the material was collected “from rocks at spring near sea” and assigns the material to Pitcairnia bracteata W.T. Aiton. One of us (SC) botanized in the area where the specimen was collected and we can confirm that this specimen is for the Lesser Antillean endemic P. bifrons (Figure 16). The species was depicted by Dorsett (1936: 347). 17There are five different labels on this specimen. Three of them assign the material to different David Fairchild’s collection numbers [i.e., Fairchild 2754 (this is for a collection of the genus Monstera), Fairchild 2767 (this is for P. brifrons [see note 16]), and Fairchild 2723 (a collection of Pitcairnia from the Dominica Botanic Garden)]. We have interpreted the specimen as belonging to Fairchild 2723 and accept the identification ofP. angustifolia found in the label written by Pitcairnia specialist R.W. Read. The species was depicted by Dorsett (1936: 280). 18There is conflicting information between the USDA accession report (Ryerson 1934:13, for accession number USDA 98500, idemtified asRaphia vinifera) and David Fairchild’s collection book (Fairchild 3772, identified asSicana odorifera (Vell.) Naudin (Cucurbitaceae). Unfortunately there are no herbarium specimens available for Fairchild 3772 to confirm the identity of this material. Interestingly, USDA accession number 98882 (Ryerson, 1934: 28) is also linked to Fairchild 3772 but is refers to S. odorifera. Camas et al.: David Fairchild in the Lesser Antilles S54
