Kazimierz Stabrowski’s Esoteric Dimensions Theosophy, Art, and the Vision of Femininity Karolina Maria Hess,1 Małgorzata Alicja Dulska Studies of the influence of esoteric motifs on art are always liable to the risk of interpretations that find coded symbols where there are none, or attribute a plu- rality of additional meanings to the content intended by an artist. On the other hand – it is known that esoteric motifs had a great impact on the history of art and on contemporary artistic works. Those influences are often understudied or even omitted on purpose.2 Well aware of both sides of the problem, we attempt here to outline the esoteric, and especially Theosophical inspirations in the works of Kazimierz Stabrowski (1869-1929), focusing on the issue of femininity, which was important at a certain time in his artistic life. In the case of Stabrowski, a radical shift in his artistic inclinations coincided in time with his engagement in organizational activities in the Theosophical Society. The paintings which will be presented here were created during a period of an intensified interest in Esoteri- cism. That interest later had negative consequences for Stabrowski’s career.3 The painter was one of the most important and influential people among those interested in Esotericism and Occultism; he was also instrumental in the formation of esoteric circles in pre–World War I Polish lands. Many artists and painters were engaged in esoteric milieus at the time. Some of them, however, kept their interests private or did not manifest them in their work. This is not the case of Stabrowski, who referred to esoteric inspirations in various of his activities, from illustrations for book covers to his most important paintings, although he did that in subtle ways. -

It focuses mainly on painting and graphic arts, and selected aspects of photography, design and architecture. Appropriation from Japanese sources triggered the articulation of new visual and conceptual languages which helped forge new art and art educational paradigms that would define the modern age. Starting with Polish fin-de-siècle Japonisme, it examines the role of Western European artistic centres, mainly Paris, in the initial dissemination of Japonisme in Poland, and considers the exceptional case of Julian Żałat, who had first-hand experience of Japan. The second phase of Polish Japonisme (1901-1918) was nourished on local, mostly Cracovian, infrastructure put in place by the ‘godfather’ of Polish Japonisme Żeliks Manggha Jasieski. His pro-Japonisme agency is discussed at length. -

'The Ohel Centre' in Josef Herman
The Ohel Centre Rachel Dickson ‘Soon after the first refugees from the Continent arrived in London, two philanthropists, the brothers Alexander and Benjamin Margulies, organised a club for Jewish intellectuals in Gower Street, which they named ‘Ohel’. A small number of us used to gather there every Friday afternoon to hold discussions and give lectures. Of the more permanent ‘members’ I recall the two folklorists, Dr J Maitlis and Dr. Olshwanger, the essayist Leo Koening [sic], the short-story writer Leo Fuchs, the writer Joseph Leftwich, and the artists Jankel Adler, Marek Schwartz [Szwarc], Bloch, Meidner, Bomberg, and myself. There was also in our midst the Yiddish poet Itzik Manger – a man of obvious genius.’1 ‘Thousands of Polish Jewish refugees and members of the armed Forces were living a lonely life and were often in need of moral and material sustenance. For these 'Ohel' should become a real home.’2 From 1933 onwards, as more than 10,000 refugee artists, writers and those involved in the creative arts (both Jewish and non-Jewish) fled to Britain from across Europe as a result of Nazi persecution, a significant number of émigré cultural organisations were quickly established within the new homeland. Many were based in north London, particularly around Hampstead, a neighbourhood that welcomed many new émigrés, Jewish and Gentile, to its artistic and intellectual milieu.3 Despite the need for assimilation and integration, a strong impulse remained towards retaining a sense of cultural identity (and, as Monica Bohm Duchen’s essay indicates, in Josef Herman this impulse was especially profound). -

RELIGIOUS REORIENTATION OR RADICAL ASSIMILATION? THE CASE OF MAREK SZWARC Abstract: For most of the assimilated Jews, religious reorientation was an alternative to Judaism – increasingly alien to them – and total secularization, and was frequently the only ticket to a ca- reer and an improvement of their social status. Only a few of them saw it as a profound religious experience which made them God-fearing, pious Catholics. The biography of Marek Szwarc, a Jewish sculptor, is an interesting material for research regarding his religious conversion. Szwarc, brought up in the spirit of Zionism, initially co-founded the secular culture based on non-religious identity. However, war, civilizational changes, and the crisis of traditional values changed his attitude to religion. This change was reflected in his works created for the expressionist group "Yung-yidish". For Szwarc the introduction of Christian iconography was motivated by the desire to emphasize the universal values associated with the spiritual rebirth of humanity. Even then, he acknowledged the visual “attractiveness” of Christianity, which, combined with expressionist or modernist influences, legitimized artistic progressivism as a manifestation of modern European culture. The turning point in the artist’s career was his baptism on May 1, 1920 in Poznań. This paper is an attempt to examine the circumstances of his conversion, taking into account his biography, its social context, as well as the impact of this decision on his art. -
