K. Čiurlionio mokytojo ir bičiulio, pirmųjų lietuvių dailės parodų vieno iš Secessionist, the founder of the Warsaw School of Visual Arts and the Sursum corda organizatorių, palaikytojų ir dalyvių, simbolisto ir secesininko Kazimiero Stabrausko Fellowship of Visual Artists-Mystics, the teacher and friend of Mikalojus Konstantinas (1869–1929) dvasinių filosofinių ieškojimų ir ilgametės kūrybos puslapius. Sudarydami Čiurlionis, and one of the first organisers, supporters, and participants of Lithuanian katalogą siekėme išryškinti K. Per aukštos meninės vertės kūrinius stengėmės atskleisti ne tik the first Lithuanian visual art exhibits, as well as links to Čiurlionis’ works and his artistic dailininko stilistinį braižą bei kūrybos vertę, bet ir nepaprastai gilų, sudėtingą jo vidinį originality. Kazimierz Stabrowski’s Esoteric Dimensions Theosophy, Art, and the Vision of Femininity Karolina Maria Hess,1 Małgorzata Alicja Dulska Studies of the influence of esoteric motifs on art are always liable to the risk of interpretations that find coded symbols where there are none, or attribute a plu- rality of additional meanings to the content intended by an artist. On the other hand – it is known that esoteric motifs had a great impact on the history of art and on contemporary artistic works. Those influences are often understudied or even omitted on purpose.2 Well aware of both sides of the problem, we attempt here to outline the esoteric, and especially Theosophical inspirations in the works of Kazimierz Stabrowski (1869-1929), focusing on the issue of femininity, which was important at a certain time in his artistic life. In the case of Stabrowski, a radical shift in his artistic inclinations coincided in time with his engagement in organizational activities in the Theosophical Society. The paintings which will be presented here were created during a period of an intensified interest in Esoteri- cism. That interest later had negative consequences for Stabrowski’s career.3 The painter was one of the most important and influential people among those interested in Esotericism and Occultism; he was also instrumental in the formation of esoteric circles in pre–World War I Polish lands. Many artists and painters were engaged in esoteric milieus at the time. Some of them, however, kept their interests private or did not manifest them in their work. This is not the case of Stabrowski, who referred to esoteric inspirations in various of his activities, from illustrations for book covers to his most important paintings, although he did that in subtle ways.

It focuses mainly on painting and graphic arts, and selected aspects of photography, design and architecture. Appropriation from Japanese sources triggered the articulation of new visual and conceptual languages which helped forge new art and art educational paradigms that would define the modern age. Starting with Polish fin-de-siècle Japonisme, it examines the role of Western European artistic centres, mainly Paris, in the initial dissemination of Japonisme in Poland, and considers the exceptional case of Julian Żałat, who had first-hand experience of Japan. The second phase of Polish Japonisme (1901-1918) was nourished on local, mostly Cracovian, infrastructure put in place by the ‘godfather’ of Polish Japonisme Żeliks Manggha Jasieski. His pro-Japonisme agency is discussed at length.

Laima Laučkaitė LITHUANIAN INSTITUTE FOR CULTURE RESEARCH, VILNIUS Crossing „Alien” National Boundaries: on the Research o f the Identity o f Vilnius A rt The aim of this article is to analyze the cultural identity of Vilnius as an East European city and the construction of its identity during the twentieth century in the historiography of art. The article is based on my experience accumulated while writing the booker//« Vilnius igoo-igis *. The ideas o f the article grew out as a kind o f spin-off from my work on the book. I believe that in the context o f the issue targeted at the cultural identity of Eastern and Central Europe they can be case-fitting and topical. The article is directed at a short period in the art history o f the city of Vilnius - the beginning of the twentieth century and its interpretation in the Lithuanian historiography o f art. At the start of the twentieth century Vilnius belonged to the so-called Northwest Province of the Russian Empire since in 1795 the Commonwealth of the Two Nations ceased to exist as independent following its partition by Russia, Austria and Prussia. In the Lithuanian and Polish lands annexed by Russia the entire nineteenth century was marked by resistance move ments and uprisings which in their turn were followed by repres sion, deportations, political persecution and economic, religious and cultural reprisals. The early twentieth century witnessed dramatic changes in the life of the empire, and the year 1905 was critical. Russia’s protracted war against Japan and the revo lutionary situation within the country made Tsar Nicholas II sign his October Manifesto, promising the people civil rights based on the person s immunity, freedom of conscience, speech and association.

  • The Revival of the Vilnius University in 1919: Historical Conditions and Importance for Polish Science
The Global and the Local: The History of Science and the Cultural Integration of Europe. nd Proceedings of the 2 ICESHS (Cracow, Poland, September 6–9, 2006) / Ed. by M. Kokowski. Ewelina Tylińska * The revival of the Vilnius University in 1919: Historical conditions and importance for Polish science STEFAN BATORY UNIVERSITY existed in Vilnius in the inter-war Poland (1919–1939) and it stood out in Poles memory as an extra ordinary scientific centre. It was regarded as a bridge between the past and the present. The university was destined to such a unique role thanks to the rich traditions and a legend which were connected with that educational institution. It was the smallest Polish university — somewhat provincial although its influence swept the whole north-eastern borderland. Its revival and further development turned out very important for Polish science and culture in the inter- war period. More than that, Vilnius university could be proud of a tradition reached as far back as the 16th century and a rich scholarly production. Thanks to Jesuits endeavours and the king Stefan Batory support a foundation diploma of Vilnius Academy was promulgated in 1578.
