The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of Arts and Architecture AN ANALYSIS OF A MIDDLE EASTERN ENCLAVE: LITTLE EGYPT A Thesis in Architecture by Dina Mahmoud © 2015 Dina Mahmoud Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Architecture May 2015 The thesis of Dina Mahmoud was reviewed and approved* by the following: Alexandra Staub Associate Professor of Architecture Thesis Adviser Nida Rehman Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture Ed Coulson Professor of Business Economics Mehrdad Hadighi Professor of Architecture Head of the Department of Architecture *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. ii ABSTRACT This study explores a Middle Eastern enclave of New York City, known as Little Egypt. It examines the ethnic characteristics and social behaviors found within this Arab enclave. Components of the research include physical characteristics of the place, such as Arabic signage, hookah displays found in storefronts, and culturally inspired street events. Additionally, the study explores the implications and use of culture to define an enclave. I examined cultural events that are either politically, socially, or religiously relevant as ways in which the member of the enclave used them to create a territory of their own. I also assessed aspects through theories developed by urban theorists and economists, such as Jane Jacobs’s concept of the effectiveness of small fragmented businesses, Michael Porter’s definition of clusters and Alejandro Portes’s enclave economic theory. These theoretical models are the backdrop of the study and are tested in Little Egypt as a way to analyze the vitality of the enclave.

  • Moldova Guidebook
MOLDOVA PREFACE Moldova is a picturesque country of rolling green hills, whitewashed villages, placid lakes, and sunflower fields. It has an old-world charm that is hard to manufacture, and some of the best vineyards in Europe. It is densely populated, with numerous ethnic groups represented, but the majority are ethnic Romanians. The economy is heavily dependent on labor intensive agriculture, and Moldova must import virtually 100% of its primary energy. Chisinau is a moderate sized city that has preserved much of its pre-Soviet character, with many low rise, older structures and tree shaded streets remaining in the central city. With its cultural ties to Russia, Romania, and Turkey, Moldova is something of an enigma. It has risen from the ruins of Soviet socialism to become a democratic republic split in two, one area controlled by the government and the other by separatist rebels nominally loyal to Mother Russia, but it is essentially concerned with making money. The possibility of unification with Romania, its closest neighbor, has been raised, but Moldova has much in common with other former Soviet countries. The official language, Moldovan, is phonetically identical to Romanian. Often business is conducted in Russian; most Romanian-speakers also speak Russian, but many members of the Russian and Ukrainian minorities do not speak Romanian/Moldovan. A government attempt early in 2002 to reintroduce compulsory study of Russian provoked months of protests but no violence. Originally Moldova was part of the greater region of Moldavia — one of the principalities that made up Romania. It lies directly between Russia and Romania and has long been the focal point for border disputes and expansionist policies.

Reviewing current evidence about health needs of Eastern European populations in the UK and identifying any health interventions aimed specifically at Eastern European populations in the UK. 2. Exploring health attitudes, beliefs and knowledge of healthy living among Eastern European populations in Warrington. 3. Exploring knowledge and experience of health and wellbeing services among Eastern European populations in Warrington. 4. Identifying barriers to accessing health and wellbeing services experienced by Eastern European populations in Warrington. In order to address points 2, 3 and 4, a qualitative data were collected from 61 members of the Eastern European community in Warrington. The majority of participants were Polish but the sample also included participants from Belarus, Hungary, Latvia, Russia, Slovakia and Ukraine. The majority of participants spoke English but focus groups included some participants with very little English. The focus group participants translated for each other and therefore we have included the views of many people who struggled with English. Three different data collection methods were used: Five focus groups (35 participants) Five one-to-one or small group interviews (7 participants) Two community engagement events (19 participants) Data were also collected during a stakeholder meeting with 11 individuals who worked in statutory, health, council and 3rd sector organisations.
