Prof. Dr. Christopher GUNN Review of Armenian Studies 3 No. 36, 2017 . Contributors Ömer Engin LÜTEM is a retired ambassador and the honorary president of Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM). He graduated from Galatarasay High School and the Faculty of Political Sciences of the University of Ankara. After several assignments in Turkish missions in France, Germany, Italy, and Libya, he became Turkish Consul General at Cologne, Germany in 1975. He served as Direc- tor General of Personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Turkey in 1979 and Director General of Intelligence and Research of the Ministry in 1981. He was assigned as the Am- bassador of the Republic of Turkey to Bulgaria in 1983 and served for six years. He served as Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry (1989-1992), Ambassador of the Re- public of Turkey to the Vatican (1992-1995), and the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Turkey to UNESCO (1995-1997). He is the founding president of Institute for Armenian Research at Eurasian Strategic Research Center - ASAM (2001) and the Crimes Against Humanity Research Institute (2006). He served as the Director of AVİM between 2009-2012. He is currently the editor of three journals published by AVİM: Ermeni Araştırmaları, Review of Armenian Studies, and International Crimes and History. Apart from these, since 2006, he has been the instructor of a master’s de- gree course titled “Emergence and Evolution of the Armenian Question” at the History Department of the Middle Eastern Technical University (METU), Ankara. Ebru ÇOBAN ÖZTÜRK serves as an Assistant Professor at Çankaya University, Department of Political Science and Interna- tional Relations. She received her undergraduate degree from Mid- dle East Technical University, Faculty of Economic and Administrative Sciences, Department of International Relations. Af- terwards, she received both her master’s and doctoral degrees from Ankara University, Faculty of Political Science, Department of In- ternational Relations. She has participated in various projects and assignments in many countries and conflict zones. She currently conducts fieldwork and theoretical studies on the subjects of violence and genocide, and has published extensively on these subjects. Review of Armenian Studies 5 No. 36, 2017 Olga Bykova Hergül is a PhD candidate at Ural State University (Ural Federal University - UrFU). She graduated from Ural State University’s Faculty of International Relations, Department of Ori- ental Studies in 2008. Upon graduation, she continued her education by applying for the doctoral degree program at the same university. For the 2009-2010 education year, she earned a research scholarship from the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey and worked as a researcher at Istanbul University’s the Institute of Ataturk’s Principles and History of Turkish Revolution and conducted research on the “Armenian Question”. In 2011-2013, she served as an instructor at Yeditepe University. She has given lectures on Russian language and Russia’s history and culture. Bykova Hergül, whose mother tongue is Russian, also speaks Turkish, English, and Spanish. She

In spite of the fact that more pragmatic revolutionaries attempted to convince the Armenian community that the Balkan model would not work for the Armenians because of demographic and geopolitical differences, the Armenian struggle for inde- pendence from the Ottoman Empire was waged in a way that was similar to the Balkan model. There is strong reason to believe that if the Armenians had had stron- ger British and Russian backing and constituted a slightly higher percentage of the population in the region of Eastern Anatolia that an independent Armenia would have emerged in Eastern Anatolia and Cilicia much in the same manner that an independent Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro emerged in the Balkans.

    The Comité Régional d'Action Viticole (CRAV): Regional identity, violence and the challenges of modernisation in the Languedoc (1944-1992). Andrew William Macrae Smith Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of PhD Queen Mary, University of London Supervised by Professor Julian Jackson 1 Abstract This thesis analyses the Comité Régional d’Action Viticole (CRAV), an active force in the French wine industry since the mid-1960s that has consistently mobilised militant winegrowers in response to economic crisis. Their role has expanded to represent not only the Midi’s viticultural heritage, but also a peculiar brand of regional nationalism. They invoked the memory of the "Grande révolte" of 1907, which saw hundreds of thousands mobilise against foreign wine imports, financial speculation and ineffective regulation. The legacy of 1907 will be considered in the context of its regionalist significance and the development of political Occitanisme, binding Oc and Vine at the beginning of the century. The prominent role of winegrowing since 1907 had seen a compact between winegrowers, local elites and the Socialist Party develop. Yet, this began to slowly disintegrate as government programmes targeted the amelioration of Languedoc wine from the early 1970s. Whilst this project embittered winegrowers, events like the shootout at Montredon in 1976 and the torching of a Leclerc store in 1984 saw the CRAV breach the frontiers of acceptability and alienate traditional supporters. Demographic change, economic development and the stain of violent protest all chipped away at the CRAV's rebellious appeal. This regional compact will be analysed both to gauge the impact of development upon regional identity and to understand changing conceptions of modernity in the agricultural South.

    OTTOMAN ARMENIAN INTRICATE RELATIONS WITH WESTERN POWERS BEFORE AND DURING THE PEACE SETTLEMENTS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR Prof. Dr. Seçil KARAL AKGÜN METU Department of History [email protected] Abstract: When the First World War brought the two imperialistic blocks of Europe face to face, the clashing interests of each included the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. The extremist Armenians of the Empire were already an armed force committed to the Allies when the Ottoman Empire, siding with the German block, had entered the war. Particularly at the Russian front they wholeheartedly contributed to the Allies, with the anticipation of an independent Armenia including Eastern Turkish provinces. Their anticipations for territorial claims increased with the Wilsonian principles and the ambiguous Article 7 in the Armistice of Mudros following the Ottoman defeat. However, the attitude of the Bolshevik Government in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution and the Turkish nationalists’ resistance to the occupations in the wake of the Armistice caused the Allies to approach Armenian demands with more caution during the Paris Peace Conference. With the Turkish resistance having turned into an organized independence war under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha and with the defeat of the Armenians in the East, the Great Powers reached a consensus in Paris that the Armenian demands were beyond anything to be realized. Upon the defeat of the Armenians the Treaty of Gyumri was concluded whereby the Eastern border of Turkey was secured. The stance of the Allied Powers toward the Armenian delegations continued throughout the Paris Peace Conference. It was not until the Lausanne Treaty signed on the 23rd of July 1923 that an Armenian expectation of an independent state encompassing Turkish provinces was put to an end.
