HELEN RODRIGUEZ-TRIAS (1929 - 2001) • First Latina President of the American Health Association • Founded the first center for newborn children in Puerto Rico • Led the New York City Department of Health Mental Hygiene Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month LUIS FEDERICO LELOIR (1906 – 1987) • 1970 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovery and study of sugar nucleotides • He established the Institute for Biochemical Research in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1947 Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month Serena Auñón, M.D., M.P.H. (b. 1976) • The first Hispanic female medical doctor to become a NASA astronaut. • She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at George Washington University.
