Coats Dean of the Graduate School August 2016 COPYRIGHT BY Amanda Kathryn Stary 2016 Published by the Graduate School ABSTRACT THE ROLE OF PARENTAL LOCUS OF CONTROL IN THE RELATIONS AMONG EARLY CHILDHOOD TEMPERAMENT, PARENTING PRACTICES, AND CHILD EXTERNALIZING BEHAVIOR by Amanda Kathryn Stary August 2016 Child externalizing behaviors are a common reason for children’s referral for mental health services, and parenting practices are a primary target of efficacious interventions. In turn, child temperament and parent beliefs, such as parental self-efficacy and locus of control, relate to the use of specific parenting practices. The present study aimed to evaluate whether parental locus of control and related components moderate the indirect effect of preschool-aged children’s temperament on their externalizing behaviors through parenting practices. Specifically, child temperament was expected to predict parenting practices only at certain levels of locus of control. Female caregivers of 146 children ages 3-5 years from southern Mississippi were recruited through preschools and daycare programs. Participants completed questionnaires measuring child temperament, child externalizing behavior, parental locus of control, parenting practices, and demographic characteristics. Conditional indirect effect analyses were conducted to examine the influence of the various moderators (i.e., parental locus of control, parental control of child’s behavior, and parental self-efficacy) on the indirect effect of each aspect of child temperament (i.e., negative affectivity, extraversion/surgency, effortful control) on child externalizing behavior through parenting practices (i.e., positive, negative). Results supported an indirect effect of child extraversion/surgency on child ii externalizing behavior through negative parenting, conditional on parental self-efficacy. Results also revealed that both parental locus of control and parental self-efficacy moderated the relation between child effortful control and positive parenting practices, but results were less clear on the extent to which this moderating influence extended to the influence of positive parenting on child externalizing behaviors. The findings suggest the importance of targeting different aspects of parental beliefs dependent upon certain aspects of their child’s temperament when attempting to prevent child externalizing behaviors. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to thank my committee chair and advisor, Dr. Sara Jordan, for her assistance in all aspects of this project. A study done by the U.S. Department of Education reported that 27.8% of students between grade 6 and grade 12 experienced being bullied at school. (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2011). A bully is commonly thought of as an individual being unnecessarily cruel to someone else, usually someone weaker. Locus of control is the extent to which an individual views consequences as either results from their actions or controlled by an outside force. (Rotter, 1954). Self-efficacy is the belief in one’s own capabilities to change outcomes in his/her life (Bandura, 1977). An individual’s perceived self-efficacy likely affects his or her ability to adapt with difficult situations.

LUKE WOOD* The Effect of Non-Cognitive Outcomes on Perceptions of School as a Feminine Domain among Latino Men in Community College This study provides insight into the relationship between Latino males’ perceptions of school as a feminine domain and the following non-cogni- tive outcomes: degree utility (the level to which Latino men perceive their degree to be worthwhile), locus of control (the degree to which Latino men believe they have personal control over their education), intrinsic interest (the degree to which Latino men are intrinsically motivated to pursue their collegiate goals), and self-efficacy (the degree to which Latino men believe that they can succeed). Findings from the hierarchical multiple regression revealed that degree utility, locus of control, and intrinsic interest were significant predictors of Latino males’ perception of school as a feminine domain. Keywords: Latino males, community college, masculinity College student success has been a topic of increasing importance over the past decade. Most recently, postsecondary educational leaders and scholars have turned their attention towards facilitating successful outcomes for students of color, par- ticularly men in the community college (Bush & Bush, 2010; Flowers, 2006; Harper, 2009; Harris III & Wood, 2013; Sáenz, Bukosi, Lu, & Rodriguez, 2013, Strayhorn, 2012; Vasquez Urias, 2012; Wood, 2013; Wood & Hilton, 2012; Wood & Ireland, 2013; Wood & Palmer, 2013). Such focus has risen to a national platform due to President Barack Obama’s current initiative, My Brother’s Keeper. The intent of the initiative is to “address persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color and ensure that all young people can reach their full potential” (White House, 2014).
