POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS ACUTE HEALTH EFFECTS SWALLOWED ! The material has NOT been classified by EC Directives or other classification systems as "harmful by ingestion". This is because of the lack of corroborating animal or human evidence. EYE ! This material can cause eye irritation and damage in some persons. SKIN ! This material can cause inflammation of the skin oncontact in some persons. ! The material may accentuate any pre-existing dermatitis condition. ! Skin contact is not thought to have harmful health effects (as classified under EC Directives); the material may still produce health damage following entry through wounds, lesions or abrasions. ! Open cuts, abraded or irritated skin should not be exposed to this material. ! Entry into the blood-stream, through, for example, cuts, abrasions or lesions, may produce systemic injury with harmful effects. Examine the skin prior to the use of the material and ensure that any external damage is suitably protected. INHALED ! The material is not thought to produce adverse health effects or irritation of the respiratory tract (as classified by EC Directives using animal models). Nevertheless, good hygiene practice requires that exposure be kept to a minimum and that suitable control measures be used in an occupational setting. ! Persons with impaired respiratory function, airway diseases and conditions such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis, may incur further disability if excessive concentrations of particulate are inhaled. If prior damage to the circulatory or nervous systems has occurred or if kidney damage has been sustained, proper screenings should be conducted on individuals who may be exposed to further risk if handling and use of the material result in excessive exposures. CHRONIC HEALTH EFFECTS ! Substance accumulation, in the human body, may occur and may cause some concern following repeated or long-term occupational exposure. There is limited evidence that, skin contact with this product is more likely to cause a sensitisation reaction in some persons compared to the general population. Based on experience with animal studies, there is a possibility that exposure to the material may result in toxic effects to the development of the foetus, at levels which do not cause significant toxic effects to the mother. Long term exposure to high dust concentrations may cause changes in lung function i.e. pneumoconiosis; caused by particles less than 0.5 micron penetrating and remaining in the lung. Prime symptom is breathlessness; lung shadows show on X-ray. Iodine and iodides, may give rise to local allergic reactions such as hives, rupture of skin blood vessels, pain in joints or diseases of the lymph nodes. Iodine and iodides cause goitre and diminished as well as increased activity of the thyroid gland. A toxic syndrome resulting from chronic iodide overdose and from repeated administration of small amounts of iodine is characterised by excessive saliva production, head cold, sneezing, conjunctivitis, headache, fever, laryngitis, inflammation of the bronchi and mouth cavity, inflamed parotid gland, and various skin rashes. Swelling and inflammation of the throat, irritated and swollen eyes and lung swelling may also occur. Swelling of the glottis, necessitating a tracheotomy has been reported. Use of iodides in pregnancy can cause foetal death, severe goitre, hypothyroidism and the cretinoid appearance of the newborn. 2 of 9 Section 3 - COMPOSITION / INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS NAME CAS RN % calcium iodide 10102-68-8 >98 Section 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES SWALLOWED Immediately give a glass of water. First aid is not generally required. If in doubt, contact a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor. EYE If this product comes in contact with the eyes Wash out immediately with fresh running water. Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention without delay; if pain persists or recurs seek medical attention. Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by skilled personnel. SKIN If skin contact occurs Immediately remove all contaminated clothing, including footwear. Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available). Seek medical attention in event of irritation. INHALED If fumes, aerosols or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area. Other measures are usually unnecessary. Wear protective clothing, gloves, safety glasses and dust respirator. Use dry clean up procedures and avoid generating dust. MAJOR SPILLS Moderate hazard. CAUTION Advise personnel in area. Alert Emergency Services and tell them location and nature of hazard. Control personal contact by wearing protective clothing. Prevent, by any means available, spillage from entering drains or water courses. Section 7 - HANDLING AND STORAGE PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING Avoid all personal contact, including inhalation. Wear protective clothing when risk of exposure occurs. Use in a well-ventilated area. Prevent concentration in hollows and sumps.     CONSIDERATION OF MANDATORY FORTIFICATION WITH IODINE FOR AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND FOOD TECHNOLOGY REPORT December 2007 1 Introduction Food Standards Australia New Zealand is considering mandatory fortification of the food supply in Australia and New Zealand with iodine. Generally, the addition of iodine to foods is technologically feasible. However, in some instances the addition of iodine can lead to quality changes in food products such as appearance, taste, odour, texture and shelf life. These changes will depend on the chemical form of iodine used as a fortificant, the chemistry of the food that is being fortified, the food processes involved in manufacture and possible processing interactions that could occur during distribution and storage. Many foods have been fortified with iodine and the potassium salts of iodine compounds have been used as the preferred form. 2 Forms of Iodine Iodine is normally introduced, or supplemented, as the iodide or iodate of potassium, calcium or sodium. The following table lists different chemical forms of iodine along with their important physical properties. (From the Institute of Cancer Research, Columbia University, and St. Luke's Hospital, New York City') Among those elements which occur only .in minor amounts in the human body, none has such an interesting history or has been the subject of so much research as iodine. Although there can be no doubt concerning its physiologi- cal significance, actually very little is known about the requirement of various cells and tissues for this element in both its organic and inorganic forms. In view of the fact that the human body not only contains chlorine and iodine, but also fluorine and bromine, the question naturally arises whether all are vital elements and to what extent they can replace one another. The experi- ments reported in this article were undertaken to determine the interchange- ability of chlorine and iodine in culture media for human thyroid fibroblasts. The effect of iodine and iodides on tissue cultures has been studied by various investigators. Pitini ( 12) observed a stimulating effect of potassium iodide on the growth of spleen and sciatic nerve of young guinea-pigs. Glass capillaries filled with a 10 per cent solution of the iodide were placed in close proximity to the cultures. In the interpretation of the results obtained with such a method it must be borne in mind that divers uncontrollable factors may affect the tissue growth, such as local changes in the osmotic pressure and in the pH of the culture medium.
