Minutes of the Sessions of the Westminster Assembly of Divines, while engaged in preparing their Directory for Church Gov- ernment, Confession of Faith, and Catechisms (November, 1644, to March, 1649). From Transcripts of the Originals, procured by a Committee of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Edited for the Committee by the Rev. ALEX. F. MITCHELL, D. D., Professor of Ecclesiastical His- tory of the University of St. Andrews, and the Rev. JOHN STRUTHERS, LL.D., Minister of Prestonpans. William Black- wood & Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1874. Pp. 556, 8vo. The Dr. Williams Library, Grafton Street, London, seems to be a rich mine of Presbyterian antiquities. From it were ob- tained the “Knox Papers,” which have proved so valuable in the illustration of Knox’s career as an English Reformer. And in it also have recently been found these “Minutes of the Westmin- ster Assembly of Divines,” contained in three volumes of manu- script foolscap, inscribed with this title, though in a more modern hand than the manuscripts themselves. In the judgment of those competent to decide such a question, there can be no doubt that the “Minutes” are in the handwriting of Adonirain Byfield himself, one of the Clerks of the Westminster Assembly, whose name is written several times on the records in the same hand- writing as the Minutes. The whole record extends from August 4, 1643, to April 24, 1652. The present published volume, however, embraces only that portion of the records extending from November, 1644, to March, 1649. -

Archbishop William Laud was arrested on 18 December 1640, and specific treason charges were brought forward early in 1641. However he did not stand trial until 1644. This study aims to assess the charges; consider the reasons for the significant delay between the arrest and trial; review the law of treason pertaining at the time and how this was applied to Laud; analyse the condemnatory and often vindictive views of Laud within the public sphere as reflected in the pamphlets and newsbooks of the period; and assess in detail the trial itself. Along with Thomas Wentworth, earl of Strafford, Laud was a principle counsellor to the king and a major hate figure for parliament who considered the two men responsible for leading the king astray during the period of the personal rule. -

History is bunk b. Language is slippery (“a word means what I say it means”) c. No other “church” can tell us what to believe. We are the church – period! d. Misgivings about theology – especially Systematic (formulaic) theology i. Inductive v. deductive Bible Study (top-down/Bottom-up) ii. Unity of truth – WHOLE Bible. Big picture v. little picture iii. Imposition of “foreign” grids (e.g. Aristotelian philosophy) e. “Doctrine” [noun: a belief or set of beliefs held and taught by a church, political party, or other group]; “Dogma” [noun: a principle or set of principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true]. i. “Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 1:13). GEORGE GILLESPIE AND THE WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY: THE DEFENCE OF PRESBYTERIANISMI W.D.J. MCKA Y, AGHADOWEY, COLERAINE, NORTHERN IRELAND Introduction George Gillespie is frequently referred to as one of the most prominent of the Scottish Commissioners at the Westminster Assembly, yet in comparison to Samuel Rutherford and Alexander Henderson, Gillespie has received little scholarly attention. In his short life, 2 however, he made a significant contribution to Presbyterian ecclesiology, in addition to his active participation in the Assembly debates ( 167 speeches, cf. Rutherford, 148 speeches, Henderson, 83- by November 1644). This study will consider Gillespie's writings against the background of the Assembly.3 Gillespie was born in Kirkcaldy, in Fife, probably in 1613, a son of the Revd John Gillespie who was minister in the town. Wodrow gives his date of birth as 21 January, but the Session Register of Births and Baptisms for the relevant period has been lost, so certainty is impossible. This material was first given as a lecture to the Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland on 18 November 1993. John Erskine and the transition of Scottish Evangelical theology Jonathan Yeager Jonathan Yeager is a PhD candidate in the department of history at the University of Stirling. Henderson contends that the 'Evangelical party in the Scottish Church of the eighteenth century displays very clearly the main characteristics of puritan ism'.' John Erskine 0721-1803), the leader of the Popular party, was listed by Henderson as 'the most distinguished of the later Evangelicals' of the Scottish Puritan tradition,2 Henderson's point is well taken. Although the Enlightenment was a powerful intellectual movement in Scotland during this time, it did not overshadow the Puritanism that was so pervasive in the sixteenth and seven teenth centuries. Men like John Owen, Samuel Rutherford, George Gillespie, David Dickson and Thomas Boston were often treated as saints among Evan gelicals in the Kirk, who emulated their works.3 Thomas Boston, for example, was the premier Scottish Puritan of his day. His Fourfold State was extremely influential and adorned the bookshelves of many Scottish families. 4 Puritanism was naturally suited for eighteenth-century Scottish Evangelicals. But. was Puritanism so pervasive that Evangelicals in Scotland were hostile to the Enlightenment? David Bebbington has suggested that the Enlighten ment was the foundation for Evangelicalism.5 He describes Erskine as typically enlightened and therefore different from the previous Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.6 Both agree that Erskine was an Evangelical, how ever, whether he was Puritan or enlightened is to be examined in this article.
