Ansell Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory, P. O. Box no. 3, Oban, Argyll, Scotland ABSTRACT From May 1985 until June 1987, decapod crustaceans in the Firth of Lome were caught monthly by creeling. Ovigerous animals were preserved, and the gills and egg masses examined for evidence of infestation by the nemertean parasite Carcinonemertes carcinophila. Samples of the gills from male and non-ovigerous female crabs were also retained, and examined for the encysted juvenile stage. In the early months of 1989, a few ovigerous Carcinus maenas obtained by diving were examined. Ovigerous Liocarcinuspuber and L. depurator were caught in small numbers, and both were infest ed with the parasite. In L. depurator the gills were heavily infested with the encysted juveniles, but few worms were found in the egg mass, 7 being the highest number in a single crab. In L. puber up to 25 worms were found in an individual crab, but the number of cysts in the gills was low. Only one ovigerous C. maenas was obtained by creeling; the egg mass contained only a few nemertines, and very few cysts were found on the gills. However, of the few shore crabs obtained by diving, one had the highest number of free-living worms found on an egg mass (42), but again very few cysts were found on the gills. Examination of the gills from male and non-ovigerous female crabs confirmed that C. -

Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. ABSTRACT We have performed series of analyses to identify decapod crustaceans inhabiting the littoral zone of the Marmara Island and to study specific ecological characteristics of the habitat. Samples of decapod crustaceans species were collected from 12 stations (6 onshore, 6 offshore) on May 12-17, 2008 and November 17-22, 2008. A total of 17 species and 1199 specimens of decapod crustaceans were recorded. Eigth species (A. lacazei, N. norvegicus, P. bluteli, P. longimana, P. platycheles, D. pugilator, D. personata and L. vernalis) have been reported in the littoral zone of Marmara Island for the first time in this study. Also our study also sheds light on some ecological properties (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen) of the habitats of the species from the littoral zone of the Marmara Island. Some species settled into the area, but failed to persist to the first winter, while others were present in high numbers throughout the year. The duration of settlement was species- specific, ranging from several weeks to several months. Body size at settlement decreased with increasing temperature during larval development. Growth potential and early mortality of a number of decapod species was examined by separation of successive moult instars from length-frequency distributions. Seasonal lows in abundance and biomass of young of the year and for previously estab- lished decapod individuals were identified at the end of July and early August, which may represent the most suitable time to release juveniles for stock-enhancement purposes. Community structure differed between settlement season and over-wintering periods. Young-of-the-year community structure differed from that of previously established individuals, with higher abundance and num- ber of species recorded for the former. The data represent a baseline study of a widely distributed community and may support further work on species interactions, improving the accuracy of predic- tion of annual recruitment fluctuations. The size of the chelipeds relative to body size is similar in the 3 species, but there are important differences In biomechanlcal parameters. Both males and females demonstrate an interspecific morphometric gradient where there is an inverse relationship between IMA and MR of the chelipeds. The prey con- sumed by portunids in the Ka de Arousa was classified according to its mobility and presence of a hard exoskeleton. The diet ot L. depurator had a high morphological diversity as the functional structure of the chelipeds is more versatile than in the othcr species. Chelipeds of L depurator are highly mobile because the MAs are relatively low, but the decrease in force produced is compensated by a relative increase in muscle mass. L. arcuatus has a lower h4R but the highest MA, hence the force produced depends more on the design of the chelipeds. These characteristics give rise to appendages with little mobility, which is reflected in a diet made up mainly of sedentary prey wlthout an exoskeleton. -

Colonization of benthic habitats by new colonizers is achieved through the influx of larvae from the water column and movements from adjacent habitats. Colonization, i.e., the composition and abundance of new colonizers, into a focal habitat may be affected by surrounding habitats. In this study, we investigated seasonal variation through an annual cycle in postlarval settlement patterns of decapod crustaceans colonizing artificial collectors on different habitats, in particular: Cymodocea nodosa seagrass meadows, sandy patches, ‘urchin-grazed’ barrens and macroalgal-dominated beds, which are arranged in patches within seascapes in the eastern Atlantic. Our results showed that: 1) decapods, at least some species, settle preferentially on artificial collectors deployed on vegetated substrates when compared to those deployed on unvegetated substrates; 2) despite most decapods have a planktonic larval phase with wide oceanic dispersal, the presence of crustaceans in particular habitats suggests a great specificity at their early post-larval stages; and 3) although subtropical waters of Gran Canaria have a weak seasonal variation, early postlarval stages of decapod crustaceans showed two distinct settlement periods, i.e., a ‘cold’ and a ‘warm’ season. -

DeStrandvlo3l(3-4) 230129 78 Occurrence of the grey swimming crab Polybius vernalis (Risso, 1827) on Rathiln Island, Northern Ireland: northernmost record so far (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura) Cédric d'Udekem d'Acoz In Northwest Europe, the grey swimming crab Polybius vernalis (Risso, 1827) has long been confused with its close relatives P. holsatus (Fabricius, 1798) and P. marmoreus (Leach, 1814) (d'Udekem d'Acoz & Rappé, 1991; Ingle & Clark, 1998, as Liocarcinus spp.). It is not yet known how far north its distribution reaches, but its northernmost published record was from Clew Bay, Clare Island, west coast of Ireland, 53°47.4'N 009o51.6'W (McCarthy et al., 2005), and on the East coast of the British Isles, it was recorded as far north as River Orwell, 51058.64'N 001o16.50'E (Ashelby, 2006). A more northern record is reported here: a dead female missing its chelipeds, carapace size 25 x 31 mm, washed ashore at Rathlin Island, Church Bay, Northern Ireland, 55017'I8"N 006oir25"W,20.vii.2011 (fig. 1). Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts. -
