Based on extensive ethnographic research in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2017, this project examines the ways in which repatriated Rastafari use music to transform their Promised Land into a reality amidst various challenges. Since they are denied legal citizenship, Rastafari deploy reggae in creative and strategic ways to gain cultural citizenship and recognition in Ethiopia. This research examines how reggae music operates as a productive mechanism, that is, how human actors use music to produce social and tangible phenomena in the world. Combining theories on music’s productive capabilities with Rastafari ideologies on word-sound, this research further seeks to provide deeper insight into the ways Rastafari effect change through performative arts. I examine how Rastafari mobilize particular discourses that both challenge and reproduce hegemonic systems, creating space for themselves in Ethiopia through music. Rastafari use reggae in strategic ways to insert themselves into the contested national narratives of Ethiopia, and participate in the practice of space-making in Addis Ababa and Shashemene through sound projects.

Plusieurs magasins spécialisés existent à travers le pays, les concerts se succèdent semaine après semaine, sans même parler des soirées qui fleurissent dans les lieux les plus improbables. Des Suisses écoutent du reggae, en collectionnent, en passent en soirées, en jouent au sein de groupes, en produisent sur leur propre label, promeuvent des artistes jamaïquains. Et même parmi les, très largement majoritaires, non-amateurs, rares sont ceux pour qui l’évocation de ce genre musical n’évoque ne serait-ce qu’un réducteur tissu de clichés. Quoi de plus naturel en apparence ? Cependant, si l’histoire s’encombrait de calculs de probabilités, les chances pour que la musique des ghettos de Kingston arrive jusqu’à des oreilles helvétiques étaient pour ainsi dire nulles. En effet, mis à part le lien musical qui fait l’objet de ce mémoire, tenter de tracer une ligne directe entre ces deux pays distants de dix mille kilomètres paraît laborieux. Géographiquement, historiquement, culturellement et économiquement, rappelons que le PIB par habitant de la Suisse est vingt-quatre fois supérieur à celui de la Jamaïque1, ils n’ont rien en commun. Il existe certes, pour un œil ou une oreille avertis, quelques minces, et somme toute anecdotiques, liens transatlantiques entre deux terres que tout oppose.

    REGGAENOMICS: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COPYRIGHT LAW AND DEVELOPMENT IN THE JAMAICAN MUSIC INDUSTRY BY SHARMA LATOYA TAYLOR A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Victoria University of Wellington 2013 ABSTRACT One argument posits that copyright is necessary for incentivising creative expressions. To what extent does this hold true for individual copyright-based sectors in a developing nation’s economy? Although Jamaica’s Copyright Act 1993 complies with the major copyright treaties, little is known about whether (and how) the copyright regime allows the Jamaican music industry to foster national development. Accordingly, the focus of this thesis is to examine the developmental impact of the copyright system on the Jamaican music industry. This thesis traces the evolution of the local music industry and its complex interaction with copyright law. This research assesses the various approaches to economic development and highlights the limitations of a collective management-based approach and weaknesses in the individual rights management model. It also analyses the compatibility between a human development approach to copyright and the theoretical justifications for copyright. It points out substantive areas of the domestic copyright legislation that could be reformed in order to improve the statute’s applicability to the music industry insofar as development is concerned. This thesis adopts a qualitative methodological approach and uses interviews from 57 music industry participants. The findings suggest that societal context is as important as the legal rights, in giving copyright owners incentives to create. Historical, political, socio-cultural, economic and institutional factors play a key role in shaping stakeholders’ treatment of copyright.
