Biography Kwame “Akompreko” Bediako Musician and poet Kwame “Akompreko” Bediako credits his musical upbringing to his elders and his general environment of his home back in Ghana (West Africa), where his roots first blossomed. “Back at home there was always drumming, singing, and dancing. Traditionally almost everyone can sing and dance so embracing the professional idea was a slower process, but most things happen empirically anyway,” says Kwame. In addition to his heritage/culture and elders, Kwame also attributes his musical talents and stage presence to Bob Marley and Tom Waits, two of his biggest musical influences. Kwame and his band, Wan Afrika, exudes positive energy in their live performances, while simultaneously addressing the joys and sorrows of humanity within the music. From this Kwame has earned another moniker as Africa’s High Priest of Roots Reggae. “To educate and entertain is the goal. We are proponents of the knowledge of the self, and we advocate a One Africa. We are taking learning beyond the traditional classroom. The Akans say ‘Yeenom nsa na yee fa adwen.’” The band has performed throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, his homeland Ghana, and with the 2012 United Nations sponsored "International Year of People of Afrikan Descent" (IYPAD) tour. Kwame has shared the bill with notables like the Wailers, Third World, Mutabaruka, Pato Banton, Sonny Ade, Wailing Souls, Sonny Okusun and many others. La sexta jornada del festival vivirá un hecho histórico: el reencuentro de The Wailers, la banda original del Rey del Reggae, Bob Marley, con un concierto que está previsto a las 0.30 horas, en el Main Stage. Based on extensive ethnographic research in Ethiopia between 2015 and 2017, this project examines the ways in which repatriated Rastafari use music to transform their Promised Land into a reality amidst various challenges. Since they are denied legal citizenship, Rastafari deploy reggae in creative and strategic ways to gain cultural citizenship and recognition in Ethiopia. This research examines how reggae music operates as a productive mechanism, that is, how human actors use music to produce social and tangible phenomena in the world. Combining theories on music’s productive capabilities with Rastafari ideologies on word-sound, this research further seeks to provide deeper insight into the ways Rastafari effect change through performative arts. I examine how Rastafari mobilize particular discourses that both challenge and reproduce hegemonic systems, creating space for themselves in Ethiopia through music. Rastafari use reggae in strategic ways to insert themselves into the contested national narratives of Ethiopia, and participate in the practice of space-making in Addis Ababa and Shashemene through sound projects.

The recognition that Bob Marley received, both during his life and after his death, is comparatively different between the two countries. As iconic as Marley is, why is his message and legacy different in the United States and most of his recognition not received till after his death? The researcher explores how Marley’s message was received in the two countries and whether his audience understood his philosophy and message in the same way. Results indicate that the communication of his thoughts were heard somewhat differently in Jamaica and the United States. Finally, this study presents recommendations for future research. Introduction Pour tous ceux, et ils sont nombreux, qui découvrent le reggae en Suisse aujourd’hui, en plein retour en force du genre, tout peut sembler une évidence : cette musique est mondialement connue, son plus illustre représentant une icône planétaire que certains n’hésitent pas à exploiter pour vendre des chaussures ou du savon. Plusieurs magasins spécialisés existent à travers le pays, les concerts se succèdent semaine après semaine, sans même parler des soirées qui fleurissent dans les lieux les plus improbables. Des Suisses écoutent du reggae, en collectionnent, en passent en soirées, en jouent au sein de groupes, en produisent sur leur propre label, promeuvent des artistes jamaïquains. Et même parmi les, très largement majoritaires, non-amateurs, rares sont ceux pour qui l’évocation de ce genre musical n’évoque ne serait-ce qu’un réducteur tissu de clichés. Quoi de plus naturel en apparence ? Cependant, si l’histoire s’encombrait de calculs de probabilités, les chances pour que la musique des ghettos de Kingston arrive jusqu’à des oreilles helvétiques étaient pour ainsi dire nulles. En effet, mis à part le lien musical qui fait l’objet de ce mémoire, tenter de tracer une ligne directe entre ces deux pays distants de dix mille kilomètres paraît laborieux. Géographiquement, historiquement, culturellement et économiquement, rappelons que le PIB par habitant de la Suisse est vingt-quatre fois supérieur à celui de la Jamaïque1, ils n’ont rien en commun. Il existe certes, pour un œil ou une oreille avertis, quelques minces, et somme toute anecdotiques, liens transatlantiques entre deux terres que tout oppose.
