Synopsis Act I Egypt, during the reign of the pharaohs. At the royal palace in Memphis, the high priest Ramfis tells the warrior Radamès that Ethiopia is preparing another attack against Egypt. Radamès hopes to command the Egyptian army. He is in love with Aida, the Ethiopian slave of Princess Amneris, the king’s daughter, and he believes that victory in the war would enable him to free and marry her. But Amneris also loves Radamès and is jealous of Aida, whom she suspects of being her rival for Radamès’s affection. A messenger brings news that the Ethiopians are advancing. The king names Radamès to lead the army, and all prepare for war. Left alone, Aida is torn between her love for Radamès and loyalty to her native country, where her father, Amonasro, is king. In the temple of Vulcan, the priests consecrate Radamès to the service of the god Ptah. Ramfis orders Radamès to protect the homeland. Act II Ethiopia has been defeated, and in her chambers, Amneris waits for the triumphant return of Radamès. Alone with Aida, she pretends that Radamès has fallen in battle, then says that he is still alive. Aida’s reactions leave no doubt that she loves Radamès. Amneris is certain that she will defeat her rival. At the city gates, the king and Amneris observe the victory celebrations and praise Radamès’s triumph. Soldiers lead in the captured Ethiopians, among them Amonasro, who signals his daughter not to reveal his identity as king. Amonasro’s eloquent plea for mercy impresses Radamès, and the warrior asks that the order for the prisoners to be executed be overruled and that they be freed instead.

DISCOGRAPHY THE FIRST MARTINELLI RECORDINGS A selection from original documents located at the Edison National Historic Site Compiled by Raymond R. Wile The recent organization of several of the letter files that had been maintained by various officers of Thomas A. Edison, Inc. has made it possible to gather together a grouping devoted to the first recording activities of Giovanni Martinelli. A few documents may be missing from the story since one major file-that belonging to Walter Miller, Head of the Foreign Department and Director of Recording, has not yet been arranged. The compilation throws considerable light on the impact that the young Martinelli must have made at the time of his London debut and also gives tantalizing glimpses of the musical scene of 1912. Since the documents provided additional information concerning the recordings I have appended a revised version of my discography of Martinelli's Edison recordings. The series of documents is reproduced through the courtesy of the McGraw-Edison Co. and through the kindness of the National Park Service's installation at the Edison National Historic Site. The continued kindness, enthusiasm and the sensitivity of the present and former staff to my research requirements has enabled me to make it useful and a pleasure to pursue. R.W. 22nd May. 1912. Mr. W. H. Miller, Manager, Recording Department, 79-83 Fifth Avenue, NEW YORK. U.S.A. Dear Mr Miller, In my letter of April 27th I referred to the tenor Martinelli who made such a very favourable impression on his first appearance at Covent Garden. He has appeared frequently since, and is referred to by all of the critics as a great find.

  • Verdi's La Forza Del Destino
Verdi’s La forza del destino - A survey of the studio and selected live recordings by Ralph Moore Despite its musical quality, variety and sophistication, La forza del destino is something of an Ugly Duckling among Verdi’s mature works, and it is for that reason that I did not survey it when I previously covered most of Verdi’s major and most popular operas. It suffers from a sprawling structure whereby succeeding scenes can seem disjointed, some peculiar motivation, an excess of disguise, an uncertain tone resulting from an uneasy admixture of the tragic and the would-be comical, and the presence of two characters with whom, for different reasons, it is difficult to empathise. Don Carlo suffers from a pathological obsession with revenge resulting in his stabbing his own sister as an “honour killing”; his implacable bloodlust is both bizarre and deeply repugnant, while Preziosilla must be one of the most vapid and irritating cheerleaders in opera. “Rataplan, rataplan” – rum-ti-tum on the drum, indeed; it takes a special singer to transcend the banality of her music but it can be done. Although it is just about possible to argue that guilt and shame are at the root of their behaviour, it is mostly inexplicable to modern audiences that Alvaro and Leonora separate after her father’s accidental death and never again try to reunite until they meet again by chance – or fate - in the last scene set five years later. Verdi attempts to lighten the relentlessly grim mood by the inclusion of a supposedly comic character in Fra Melitone who often isn’t very funny – and what is the point of Trabuco, a superfluous peddler? Finally, what the heck is an Incan prince doing in Seville, anyway? While fully aware of its failings, I have returned to La forza del destino because it contains some marvellous music and the kinds of emotional turmoil and dramatic confrontation which lie at the heart of opera.
