El centenario de Ramón Vinay por José Octavio Sosa Para Eduardo Lizalde fortunadamente, existen registros de audio de las muchas representaciones que a lo largo de 40 años de Aactividad escénica y de concierto se han recopilado, ahora remasterizadas, del gran cantante Ramón Vinay, artista al que es imposible ubicar en una tesitura, pues abarcó las tres: tenor, barítono y bajo, caso singular. Por ello fue el cantante e intérprete de un variado repertorio operístico que abarcó desde Monteverdi, Donizetti y Rossini, hasta Wagner y Strauss, pasando por Verdi, Saint-Saëns, Bizet, Puccini, Alfano, Berg y Mussorgsky. Nacido en Chillán, Chile, el 31 de agosto de 1911, el cantante murió en la ciudad de Puebla, México, el 4 de enero de 1996. Alumno en México de José Pierson y posteriormente de Guido Picco, debutó en Bellas Artes (antes de su inauguración y llamado entonces Teatro Nacional) como barítono, el 16 de septiembre de 1931, cantando el papel de Alfonso XI en La favorita de Donizetti, acompañado por la contralto Abigail Borbolla, el tenor Joaquín Álvarez y el bajo Francisco Alonso (cantantes de la Compañía Impulsora de Pierson), bajo la batuta de Alberto Flachebba. Aside from the English, every group of U.S. immigrants has experienced some degree of exclusion or discrimination that temporarily (or permanently) transformed them into “minorities”. This course examines the ethnic experiences of those groups (and various religious, racial, gender and sexual minorities) to see how their experiences have shaped and changed U.S. society. Students who take this course should gain a much better understanding of why various minority groups act as they do, allowing you to live and work more effectively in a multicultural environment. Course Description: This course analyzes the social histories, socio-economic conditions, and current challenges confronting various racial, ethnic, sexual, gender, and other minority groups in the U.S.. Various competing theoretical frameworks are utilized, and the general principles of dominant-minority group relations are examined. The politics and social construction of “race” in the U.S. is also studied, focusing on how the Jews and the Irish became “white” over time, and why some social groups adopt a racial identity, while others adopt an ethnic identity. -
The Moldavian and Romanian Dialectal Corpus

The corpus contains 33564 samples of text (with over 10 million tokens) collected from the news domain. The samples belong to one of the following six topics: culture, finance, politics, science, sports and tech. Nel corso del nostro studio siamo partiti dal 1812, data di annessione della Bessarabia all’Impero russo, e abbiamo cercato di ripercorrere alcune tappe importanti che hanno portato all’attuale realtà sociolinguistica della Repubblica di Moldavia. Soffermandoci sulle politiche linguistiche della Russia zarista e sulle pianificazioni linguistiche sovietiche, abbiamo rilevato l'iniziale processo di profonda russificazione subito dalla popolazione autoctona dalla Bessarabia, cui è seguito il tentativo, in parte riuscito, di creare un nuovo popolo e un nuovo idioma. La cosiddetta lingua moldava altro non è che l'espressione della volontà di separare, anche linguisticamente, i romeni della Bessarabia dal resto della Romania, di fatto sancendo l'esistenza di due nazionalità e di due idiomi ben distinti. L’unità etnolinguistica romena dell’area compresa tra i fiumi Tibisco, Danubio, Dniestr e il Mar Nero, già affermata dagli storici e dai cronicari a partire dal XVI secolo, viene dunque messa in discussione e avversata in modo esplicito dalle tesi del moldovenismo, fenomeno linguistico e culturale incentrato sulla differenziazione etnica e linguistica tra moldavi e romeni. -

Verdi's La Forza Del Destino
Verdi’s La forza del destino - A survey of the studio and selected live recordings by Ralph Moore Despite its musical quality, variety and sophistication, La forza del destino is something of an Ugly Duckling among Verdi’s mature works, and it is for that reason that I did not survey it when I previously covered most of Verdi’s major and most popular operas. It suffers from a sprawling structure whereby succeeding scenes can seem disjointed, some peculiar motivation, an excess of disguise, an uncertain tone resulting from an uneasy admixture of the tragic and the would-be comical, and the presence of two characters with whom, for different reasons, it is difficult to empathise. Don Carlo suffers from a pathological obsession with revenge resulting in his stabbing his own sister as an “honour killing”; his implacable bloodlust is both bizarre and deeply repugnant, while Preziosilla must be one of the most vapid and irritating cheerleaders in opera. “Rataplan, rataplan” – rum-ti-tum on the drum, indeed; it takes a special singer to transcend the banality of her music but it can be done. Although it is just about possible to argue that guilt and shame are at the root of their behaviour, it is mostly inexplicable to modern audiences that Alvaro and Leonora separate after her father’s accidental death and never again try to reunite until they meet again by chance – or fate - in the last scene set five years later. Verdi attempts to lighten the relentlessly grim mood by the inclusion of a supposedly comic character in Fra Melitone who often isn’t very funny – and what is the point of Trabuco, a superfluous peddler? Finally, what the heck is an Incan prince doing in Seville, anyway? While fully aware of its failings, I have returned to La forza del destino because it contains some marvellous music and the kinds of emotional turmoil and dramatic confrontation which lie at the heart of opera. -

LA SALLE, FIELD BUILDING, CHICAGO 3 Easter Program Notes Stabat Mater Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) During Lenten season and Holy Week, one of the most vivid ways of signifying the passion and crucifixion of the Saviour is through the liturgical ritual of the Catholic Church called the Stations of the Cross. This ritual includes fourteen stations or scenes which depict the events from the time Christ was condemned to death by Pilate to His burial in the sepulchre. In formal liturgy, between each of these stations or scenes, one verse of a hymn honoring the Mother of Christ as she stood at the foot of the cross, is sung. This hymn is called the Stabat Mater (There Stood the Mother). This tradition of singing the Stabat Mater is a very old one that probably had its origin in the 13th century, when one of the "tropes" or additions to the Alleluia opened with the words "Stabat Mater." The words of the original Latin poem are generally attributed to the 13th century Franciscan Jacopo da Todi, and the melody used was probably of a plainsong nature ( having one voice only, with no accompaniment) .
