Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr .: Renowned Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr. analyzed the genealogy and genetics of celebrity guests.

Downton Abbey, Season Two, a Masterpiece production, proved very successful and generated extensive media buzz, a Golden Globe, several Emmy Awards and excellent ratings. WNET used the success of Downton Abbey to promote the station and engage with viewers on multiple levels.

For the ninth consecutive year, national research confirmed that PBS is the most trusted institution and is considered an “excellent” use of tax dollars. PBS was also called the “most fair” network for news and public affairs. In addition, PBS KIDS was named the most educational TV/media brand, the safest on-air and online destination, and the top provider of content that helps children build reading and math skills.

SundayArts was re-launched as NYC-ARTS , a primetime series with multiple digital platforms. The NYC-ARTS app was nominated for “Best New York City App” by ’ About.com.

Children’s Programming

Cyberchase celebrated its 10 th anniversary on January 21 st . A new Cyberchase website launched, housing the entire project’s content. The Washington Post recommended the new site as a fun, educational website for kids, and combined with a continued strong broadcast presence, the site makes Cyberchase one of the largest media-based math resources for children. WNET has formed a partnership with Ruckus Media Group to produce a series of interactive storybooks based on Cyberchase .

First Quarter, Continued

Buzz & Delete Save the Day , an innovative spin-off of Cyberchase , in which kids will play the roles of Buzz and Delete on a journey through cyberspace, was funded through PBS's Ready to Learn grant initiative. The project will harness the power of interactive media to bolster math learning in children ages 6-8.

Mission US: Flight to Freedom was launched on January 24 th . The program is the second in a series of free, digital role-playing games designed to transform the way middle school students learn U.S. history. Flight to Freedom immerses learners in the experiences of a runaway slave in the year before the Civil War. USA Today’s Jinny Gundmundsen reviewed the interactive game and gave it 4 out of 4 stars. The number of student players was more than 200,000, compared to approximately 95,000 in June 2011. Registered teachers have increased from about 6,800 to approximately 12,700 over the same period.

Education

The 7th Annual Celebration of Teaching & Learning provided a unique forum for demonstrating WNET’s engagement as a community partner in preK-12 education to thousands of teachers, administrators and stakeholders. This year’s event featured a range of WNET and public media content, talent, initiatives and instructional resources, including: Henry Louis Gates, Jr./Finding Your Roots; Yul Kwon/America Revealed; History Detectives; Sid the Science Kid; Dinosaur Train; Mission US; VITAL & PBS LearningMedia; PBS NewsHour’s “the.NEWS”; CPB’s American Graduate; Ready To Learn; NPR’s StoryCorps; and much more.

WNET also produced The 2nd Annual International Summit on Teaching for the US Department of Education, hosting 24 countries/territories in a discussion about global education policy.

VITAL (Video in Teaching and Learning) WNET’s primary instructional digital media portal continues to grow, with over 65,000 registered users of VITAL NY in New York State, with content added this fall from American Masters and Great Performances, as well as STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) resources supported by a $1.2M grant from NASA. VITAL extended its reach to New Jersey under the umbrella of NJTV. VITAL NJ, a new service created in collaboration with PBS LearningMedia, now provides free digital media based on public broadcasting content to the teachers and students of New Jersey.

Awards and Accolades

The NYC-ARTS iPhone App won “Best New York City App 2012” in the About.com Readers Choice Awards.

American Masters was awarded a Peabody Award for Charles & Ray Eames: The Architect and the Painter .

Get the Math won a 2012 New York Emmy Award and was named a Webby Awards Honoree.

Religion & Ethics NewsWeekly received a Webby People’s Voice Award in the “Religion & Spirituality” category. The program was also rewarded a Certificate of Merit from the Gabriel Awards.

NJTV was honored with a Public Service Award from the Council on State Public Affairs.

Women, War & Peace won two Overseas Press Club Awards – the “Edward R. Murrow Award” for Best TV interpretation or documentary on international affairs and the “Robert Spiers Benjamin Award” for best reporting in any medium on Latin America. The Overseas Press Club waived its rules limiting programs to a single award due to the program’s “exceptional quality.”

American Masters Johnny Carson: King of Late Night was the highest-rated and most- watched American Masters in the series’ 26-year history.

Programming: Local

Treasures of New York: Building Stories featured the life of architect Costas Kondylis. Two new Treasures episodes, Pratt Institute and Art Underground , premiered in June.

Long Island Business Report , a look at the economic and business trends that impact the three million residents of Long Island, premiered on WLIW21 with press in The New York Times and other outlets. NJTV

NJTV continues its focus on local programming and fundraising.

NJ Today featured an online and live interview with Managing Editor Mike Schneider and Ryan Miller, the recipient of a heart transplant and focus of a three-part special documentary series Ryan’s Heart . This live interview occurred after the final documentary segment was broadcast on NJTV in April.

Children’s and Educational Media

Noah Comprende , was rebranded as Oh Noah! and launched its new season on pbskidsgo.org.

Get the Math was added as a featured project of CPB’s American Graduate initiative. The season two modules, which focus on professional basketball, the restaurant business, and special effects production, began rolling out in May.

Education

American Graduate: A Conversation with Teachers , hosted by Ray Suarez of Need to Know and PBS NewsHour , was taped at the Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center on May 22, for broadcast June 18.

Pre-production began for WNET’s major 8-hour broadcast event, American Graduate Day NYC , on September 22, 2012, including securing community-based organization partners and sponsors.

Interactive/Social Media

#DoesArtMatter, a social media campaign to start a public dialogue about the role of the arts in society, was launched in March.

In April, the MetroFocus iPhone App became available for download. MetroFocus also partnered with Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. Students in the Master’s program will contribute fully produced content for MetroFocus , both on-air and online.

Community Relations

Immigrant Heritage Week from April 17 th - 24 th included the Community Stories campaign, a partnership between WNET and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Neal Shapiro gave remarks at an Immigrant Heritage Week launch event at Gracie Mansion. The spots appeared on- air throughout the remainder of 2012.

A launch event for Sherlock Holmes, Series 2 , hosted by WNET, WGBH and PBS in New York, was attended by 400 fans and members of the media along with several donors to the Masterpiece Trust.

“Great Performances” and “American Masters” were nominated for 10 Primetime Emmy Awards. “Nature” was nominated for five News and Documentary Emmy’s. “Oh Noah!” received an Imagen award.

Highlights/Key Company News

Seeing an opportunity for stations to share content and marshal scarce resources, WNET spearheaded a new initiative that allows stations to share video and other materials to create locally customized arts programming across the country.

THIRTEEN’s 50 th anniversary was officially marked in September, with a Mayoral proclamation and attendance at the NYSE opening bell ceremony. NJTV celebrated its first full year in operation in July. National Programming

The groundbreaking production “Great Performances at the Met: Wagner’s Ring Cycle” aired across three days in September.

The first film of the renewed “Secrets of the Dead” series, “The Man Who Saved the World” aired in October, marking the 50 th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Five more new episodes follow in 2013. Local Programming

Pioneers of THIRTEEN – The 60s: Experimental Days aired on September 7.

Treasures of New York: City Parks premiered on September 9; Treasures of New York: Roosevelt House premiered October 11.

New York Business Report with Michael Stoler , a new weekly show that started in September, is fully funded. A new magazine-style version of Metrofocus premiered in September.

A new series Best Places to Live started on NJTV in October. New seasons of Tales from the Jersey Shore, Driving Jersey and NJ Docs continue to air on NJTV. NJ Today specials covered both the Democratic and Republican Conventions as well as full election night coverage.

Education and Community Engagement

American Graduate Day was broadcast live from the Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center on Saturday, September 22. The event profiled more than 30 national and local community-based organizations working to help solve the national dropout crisis and mobilize viewers to become involved.

The educational web site for Annie launched, and phase 2 will launch October 1. The site is a precursor to WNET’s upcoming documentary on the early 2013 Broadway revival of the show.

WNET’s popular American history videogame Mission US is in pre-production for Mission 3, which will focus on Westward Expansion from the perspective of a young Northern Cheyenne boy.

About 100 neighbors and supporters visited the Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center during its 50 th Anniversary Open House.

THIRTEEN was a media sponsor at the River-to-River Festival and we are planning a major event this fall to celebrate the premiere of the Half the Sky series.

Fourth Quarter

Awards and Accolades Nature’s My Life as a Turkey received the Emmy for Outstanding Nature Programming at the 33rd Annual News and Documentary Awards held in October.

CPB has awarded WNET and NPR its first-ever Community Lifeline Awards . The award recognizes public media stations that provide exemplary service to their communities during local emergencies, such as natural disasters, major industrial accidents, acts of terrorism or other urgent situations. The award recognized the work of THIRTEEN, NJTV and WLIW21 in serving as important lifelines to the citizens of New York and New Jersey leading up to and in the weeks following Hurricane Sandy.

The National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) honored WNET with awards for promotion and instructional media: Instructional Media • Mission US: Mission 2 – Flight to Freedom (Classroom Content) • Noah Comprende (Nontraditional) • Get the Math (Instructional Media Product) Promotion • Celebration of Teaching & Learning Program Book (Print Design)

American Masters was awarded a Producers Guild of America Award for "Outstanding Producer of Non-Fiction Television" – a category the series won last year. It was the only PBS series nominated.

Highlights/Key Company News

Hurricane Sandy created operational challenges, but presented an extraordinary opportunity for WNET to demonstrate its commitment to community. WNET staff addressed serious infrastructure threats and ensured that all stations remained operational throughout the storm. In addition, NJTV and MetroFocus provided extensive storm coverage that was well received by audiences and elected officials alike.

In November, the 50 th Anniversary Gala, hosted by Brian Williams, honored past Chairmen along with public television icon Rosalind P. Walter. Performances at the event were taped for an upcoming Great Performances 40th Anniversary special.

Programming Highlights

Great Performances premiered Magical Mystery Tour Revisited along with a reprise of the seminal Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour on December 14 th .

American Masters Inventing David Geffen was well-received by the press and audiences after its premiere on November 23 rd .

Need to Know produced the PBS Election Special 2012: What’s at Stake? Hosted by Hari Sreenivasen, it aired the Friday before the election and included contributions from the PBS Newshour , Washington Week and Frontline .

NJTV’s Hurricane Sandy coverage through 11/5 included 12 live NJ Today broadcasts; one live NJTV/MetroFocus Special Report: Coping with Catastrophe ; 9 live Gov. Christie press conferences, 12 live on-air Updates; 34 Facebook postings, 81,980 YouTube video plays, 10 press announcements and a total reach of 1.3 million.

Expanding on the discussions brought forth from the PBS special After Newtown , which aired on Friday, December 20, WNET produced What Next after Newtown a three-hour event that investigated the concerns raised by the recent tragedies. The segments included an optional local insert to be produced by the individual stations and addressed a range of important topics that weigh heavily on the country.

Children’s and Education

WNET and Columbia University’s Teachers College received a two-year grant from the National Science Foundation to develop prototypical mobile games to teach fractions to children ages 8-11 years old. The mobile apps will incorporate the stories, characters, math content and research of Cyberchase , WNET’s Emmy Award-winning math television series and multimedia project, into Teacher College’s research on embodied cognition theory and gesture-based simulation games.

Community

WNET was a media sponsor of Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square, NYC’s largest outdoor holiday festival. The Tisch WNET Studios at Lincoln Center was one of the most visited sites with over 900 guests touring the studio.

Community Relations developed a campaign to build awareness for Half the Sky , a new documentary in CPB’s Women and Girls Lead initiative. The campaign included a screening and panel discussion with some of the film’s stars and executive producer Maro Chermayeff and was moderated by Nicholas Kristof.
