They will receive the Frank del Olmo Print Journalist of the Year Award, the Photojournalist of the Year Award and the Broadcast Journalist of the Year Award, respectively. All the ñ Award recipients and winners in other categories will be honored during the 23rd Annual Noche de Triunfos Journalism Awards Gala on Sept. 12 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. The gala is NAHJ's signature event during Hispanic Heritage month. Ray Suarez of The NewsHour, the evening's honorary gala chair, and master of ceremonies Michelle Caruso-Cabrera of CNBC, will host the event attended by journalists, Latino leaders and the community at large. The work to be honored with the Journalism Awards that evening range from photos that chronicle the rehabilitation of a Marine injured in Iraq ("Among the Wounded") to a series of TV news stories in Spanish that expose how a small mistake in a hospital caused the death of a newborn that parents had waited ten years to have, (Peligro en los Hospitales.) The winning work also explored the life-and-death struggle of a teen who was shot in the face by her ex-boyfriend ("Johanna: Facing Forward,) Guatemalan immigrants' fight to make ends meet while preserving their cultural ties to their homeland (Mayan Daily Life), and the plight of child brides forced into marriages around the world and the potential for change (Child Brides: Stolen Lives.) "Among the wounded: Cpl. Eric Morante," photo by Lara Solt "Surviving and thriving in the face of tragedy and despair was a big theme of this year's awards," said Iván Román, NAHJ's executive director. "From Honduran environmentalists risking their lives for their beliefs to a gunshot victim fighting for her life in Cleveland to an injured Marine back from Iraq readjusting to life back home - the stories had universal themes that connected to everyone, and made us proud to be journalists. The body of work awarded tells the complex stories of Latinos and immigrants in a more complete and compelling way, something all too rare in today's news coverage about our communities." The gala's presenters include Maggie Rodriguez, Co-Anchor of CBS News' The Early Show, Ruben Navarrette, Jr., Syndicated Columnist with the Washington Post Writers Group, Michael Madrid, Sports Photo Editor at USA TODAY, Lori Montenegro, Washington Correspondent of Noticiero Telemundo, and J.
