INFRASTRUCTURE Bangkok has been undergoing rapid urbanization and industrialization since 1960. The increasing population is due in part to the development of infrastructure, such as road networks, real estate developments, land value, and a growing economy that resulted in expansion into the surrounding areas and the migration of people to the city from all parts of the country. 7>ÌiÀÊ ÃÕ«ÌÊÊ >}Ê>`Ê6VÌÞÊÀi> Õ°° Discovering the City the Discovering City the Discovering xxÈ°Ó Èää x£È°Ó xän°£ {nÈ°Î {n°È {ÇÈ°Ç {ää Óää ££°Ç È°{ n°£ ä ÓääÓ ÓääÎ Óää{ , - / *1 Ê7/ ,Ê-1**9Ê Ê"/ ,- 1- --]Ê-// Ê / ,*,- ]Ê"6¿/Ê 9Ê Ê 1-/, Source: Metropolitan Waterworks Authority /Ì>Ê7>ÌiÀÊ*À`ÕVÌÊÉÊ Water Management ->iÃÊÊ >}Ê>`Ê6VÌÞÊÀi> At present, the Metropolitan Waterworks To develop an effl uent treatment system, To build walls to prevent and solve Authority (MWA) provides the public and establish a “Flood Control Center” fl ood problems caused by seasonal, water supply in the BMA, Nonthaburi with 55 network stations, using low-cost northern and marine overfl ows in the and Samut Prakarn provinces at an treatment techniques and building Bangkok area. © Lonely Planet Publications 101 BANGKOK BANGKOK Bangkok In recent years, Bangkok has broken away from its old image as a messy third-world capital to be voted by numerous metro-watchers as a top-tier global city. The sprawl and tropical humidity are still the city’s signature ambassadors, but so are gleaming shopping centres and an infectious energy of commerce and restrained mayhem. The veneer is an ultramodern backdrop of skyscraper canyons containing an untamed universe of diversions and excesses. The city is justly famous for debauchery, boasting at least four major red-light districts, as well as a club scene that has been revived post-coup. Meanwhile the urban populous is as cosmopolitan as any Western capital – guided by fashion, music and text messaging. But beside the 21st-century façade is a traditional village as devout and sacred as any remote corner of the country. This is the seat of Thai Buddhism and the monarchy, with the attendant splendid temples. Even the modern shopping centres adhere to the old folk ways with attached spirit shrines that receive daily devotions. Bangkok will cater to every indulgence, from all-night binges to shopping sprees, but it can also transport you into the old-fashioned world of Siam. Rise with daybreak to watch the monks on their alms route, hop aboard a long-tail boat into the canals that once fused the city, or forage for your meals from the numerous and lauded food stalls. HIGHLIGHTS Joining the adoring crowds at Thailand’s most famous temple, Wat Phra Kaew (p108) Escaping the tour

    10. 10. 2019 Narayana - Wikipedia Narayana Narayana (Sanskrit: , IAST: Nārāyaṇa) is known as one who is in नारायण Narayana yogic slumber on the celestial waters, referring to Lord Maha Vishnu. He is also known as the "Purusha" and is considered Supreme being in नारायण Vaishnavism. According to the Bhagavat Gita, he is also the "Guru of the Universe". The Bhagavata Purana declares Narayana as the Supreme Personality Godhead who engages in the creation of 14 worlds within the universe as Brahma when he deliberately accepts rajas guna, himself sustains, maintains and preserves the universe as Vishnu by accepting sattva guna. Narayana himself annihilates the universe at the end of maha-kalpa as Kalagni Rudra when he accepts tamas guna. According to the Bhagavata Purana, Narayana Sukta, and Narayana Upanishad from the Vedas, he is the ultimate soul. According to Madhvacharya, Narayana is one of the five Vyuhas of Vishnu, which are cosmic emanations of God in contrast to his incarnate avatars. Bryant, Edwin F., Krishna: a Sourcebook. p.359 "Madhvacharya separates Vishnu’s manifestations into two groups: Vishnu’s vyuhas (emanations) and His avataras (incarnations). The Vyuhas have their basis in the A depiction of Lord Narayana at Pancharatras, a sectarian text that was accepted as authoritative by both Badami cave temples the Vishishtadvaita and Dvaita schools of Vedanta. • Deadly Explosion in Bangkok's Commercial District Represents New Kind of IED Attack
Deadly explosion in Bangkok's commercial district represents new kind of IED attack 17 Aug 2015 IHS Economics and Country Risk At least 12 people were killed and dozens injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near a shrine in a busy central Bangkok intersection at the heart of the city's commercial district. IHS perspective Significance An IED attack with the power to cause a large number of casualties is very rare in Bangkok. Implications Suspicion is likely to fall on supporters of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra or Malay-Muslim separatists. Outlook The attack is likely to lead to a short-term downturn to Bangkok's tourist industry. The explosion happened in front of the Erawan Shrine at the Ratchaprasong intersection at around 7 pm local time today (17 August). The Hindu shrine is located in a busy commercial district near large hotels and upmarket shopping centres such as the Central World, Gaysorn Plaza and Siam Paragon. The shrine is popular with tourists and local worshippers. A national police spokesman, Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri, told the AFP news agency that the explosion was caused by a bomb and that the police were investigating the kind of explosives used. Other police officers were quoted as saying that the explosion was caused by a motorcycle-borne improvised explosive device (IED). No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. It is highly unusual for such a powerful IED to be used in Bangkok. There was an IED explosion at a walkway connecting the Siam Skytrain station to the Siam Paragon mall in February this year.

  • The Grand Palace and Old Bangkok by Naengnoi Suksri, Narisa Chakrabongse, Thanit Limpabandhu, with Photography by Paisarn Piemmettawat
342 Reviews The Grand Palace and Old Bangkok by Naengnoi Suksri, Narisa Chakrabongse, Thanit Limpabandhu, with photography by Paisarn Piemmettawat. (Bangkok: River Books, 2014). ISBN 978-974-9863-41-1 (soft). Visitors to Bangkok in the old days could scarcely know what to expect as they stepped off the boat. Indeed, the traveler in 1914 had only a Baedeker Guide to turn to—in German—in which Siam was lumped together with India, Malaya, Burma, and Java. Fast-forward a hundred years, to 2014, and the number of books on Thailand would require a fleet of tuk-tuks to transport. In fact, few topics in Thai life have not escaped investigation, from the nation’s nightlife to its spiritual life, from its flora to fauna. Even Bangkok’s celebrated ‘street food’ has spawned a few fresh titles. Paradoxically, as the number of books has mushroomed, the caliber has witnessed a corresponding decline. Hence, discerning visitors and Bangkok residents alike will welcome this new work on the Grand Palace and nearby historical and cultural sites. No single book has hitherto covered quite the same ground and with such depth, thereby filling a tremendous vacuum. Moreover, with special permission accorded from His Majesty the King, River Books was able to photograph the interiors of many royal buildings that are completely off limits to the public. Bangkok was born from the ashes of Ayutthaya, the former capital besieged by Burmese forces in 1767. A new capital arose the following year in Thonburi, situated opposite modern Bangkok on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River.

  • The Sacred Geography of Bangkok's Markets
Volume 32.3 September 2008 631–42 International Journal of Urban and Regional Research DOI:10.1111/j.1468-2427.2008.00801.x The Sacred Geography of Bangkok’s Markets ARA WILSON Abstract Vernacular shrines pervade the markets of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand and a globalized city in Southeast Asia. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Bangkok, this article traces the history of cross-border flows and shifting political economic arrangements that remapped the sacred geography of the city. It considers the consolidation of a pantheon of enchanted figures into a modern ‘prosperity religion’that is practiced in commercial enterprises as well as in daily life across the country. Mapping the spiritual geography embodied in market shrines reveals changing mobilizations of local and transnational circuits of spiritual power in relation to the shifting national and transnational flows of material and cultural power. Vernacular shrines A mercantile metropolis, Bangkok overflows with shops, stalls, bazaars and shopping complexes, a plethora which has generated the commercial modernity of the capital of Thailand. Tucked into these ubiquitous venues for capitalist exchange are sacred spaces. Virtually all of Bangkok’s market sites include smaller or larger shrines hosting a range of enchanted figures. Ranging from a well-known elaborate shrine dedicated to Ganesh (the Erawan Shrine) to a small phallic lingam balanced on a noodle cart, such spiritual markers punctuate public and semi-public spaces of the city. Indeed, Bangkok’s energetic consumer economy acts as a stage for a transcultural pantheon of potent spiritual figures. Market shrines link economic and spiritual circuits in everyday practice and urban space.
