Introduction Peru is a very interesting birding destination. With almost 1900 species observed in the country it is one of the most rich countries in the world only surpassed by in diversity. Peru also has a little more than 110 endemics. Peru is a very large country roughly 3 times the size of Sweden. With such a large country and only a limited time of 4 weeks our choice was to concentrate on northwest Peru. We contacted Boris Herrera, having had him as a guide on our 2008 trip we were confident that he would do a great job guiding us in northern Peru. In hindsight it was definitely a wise choice. Boris is not only very knowledgeable about the he is also a very nice and pleasant person to bird with. If you want to contact Boris you find his contact details on www.endemicbirds.com The main objective was as usual to see as many species of birds as possible and in particular endemics. We had a few target species of course and two of them were Marvellous Spatuletail and the charismatic Long-whiskered Owlet. We also wanted to include a pelagic trip in the itinerary. Boris came up with the itinerary below. The itinerary largely follows the classical northern Peru birding route. We recorded 713 species of birds during the trip, including 39 endemics. We also saw 14 species of mammals, a few amphibians and reptiles and 100’s of butterflies. Most of the photos in the report were taken by Janis. You can find more of his photos from the trip on http://www.pbase.com/tarsiger/

Site descriptions Below you will find brief descriptions of the major birding sites that we visited. Included for each site are also notes on birds observed (and in the rare case birds that should have been seen ;-). In brackets after the site name is the region in Peru.

Pelagic Máncora (Piura) Máncora is a small city in northern Peru which means it is in the northern part of the Humboldt current and does not get as many sub Antarctic seabirds as southern Peru. The warmer water in the north does however attract birds like Waved Albatross and Galapagos Petrel. Other birds seen included Pink-footed Shearwater, Nazca Booby and Sabine’s Gull. We also saw about 10 unidentified whales and a Green Sea Turtle. We had two pelagic trips on two consecutive days. The original plan was to have the second day as backup. Unfortunately Anders missed this part of the trip due to a delayed flight. Instead he spent a day in Amsterdam making Boris envious with observations of e.g. Mute Swan and Eurasian Magpie.

Short-beaked Common Dolphin Delphinus delphis Pink-footed Shearwater Puffinus creatopus

Waved Albatross Phoebastria irrorata We stayed about 15 km south of Máncora in a small village called Organos. A few kilometers north along the road there was a good birding spot just where a small stream crosses the road. To the cagrin of Anders a Jabiru was seen here. Well out of it´s normal range. Other birds along the road were Coastal Miner (endemic), Parrot-billed Seedeater and Short-tailed Field Tyrant.

Jabiru Jabiru mycteria Coastal Miner Geositta peruviana Quebrada Frejolillo (Piura) Quebrada Frejolillo near Limon is the(?) best place to see White-winged Guan in the wild. We spent half a day here and saw 4 guans. The ravine (quebrada) and the road leading to it also holds a number of other hard to find species like Pale-browed Tinamou, Red-masked Parakeet (only seen here),Peruvian Screech-Owl, Tumbes , Elegant Crescentchest, Grey-breasted Flycatcher, White-headed Brush Finch and the endemic Tumbes Tyrant.

Tumbes Tyrant Tumbezia salvini Tumbes Hummingbird Leucippus baeri

White-winged Guan Penelope albipennis Limón de Porculla (Piura) The road to Jaén from Olmos goes over the pass Abra Porculla. We birded a side track near the town of Limón de Porculla which is at about 1600 m elevation. This is a good place for some high altitude tumbesian endemics even though the habitat is a bit degraded. Some of the species seen include White-winged and Bay-crowned Brush Finch, Tumbesian Tyrannulet, Piura Chat-Tyrant (endemic), Line-cheeked Spinetail, Chapman’s Antshrike, Purple-collared Woodstar and Grey-chinned Hermit (ssp. porcullae), Pallid Dove (only here) and Chestnut-crowned Antpitta. While in this area we stayed at El Remanzo lodge in Olmos. Stellan managed to see his bird no. 3000 a very beautiful Plumbeous-backed Thrush. This was of course celebrated with sparkling wine!

Tumbesian Tyrannulet Phaeomyias tumbezana White-winged Brush Finch Atlapetes leucopterus

Celebrating Stellan’s tick no. 3000 a Plumbeous-backed Thrush at Quebrada Frejolillo Bosque de Pomac (Lambayeque) Although mainly a protected historical site (Batan Grande) Santuario Historico Bosque de Pomac also protects some tropical dry forest. Situated about 30 km north of Chiclayo it protects about 5900 ha of fairly well preserved forest. The main target birds here are Peruvian Plantcutter (endemic), Rufous Flycatcher (endemic) and Tumbes Swallow of which we saw all. There is also a possibility to see Black-faced Ibis in this area but we missed it.

Rufous Flycatcher Myiarchus semirufus Peruvian Plantcutter Phytotoma raimondii Santa Rosa fields – Puerto Etén (Lambayeque) Southwards from the town Pimentel is an open landscape with coastal marshes and beaches. This stretch is called Santa Rosa fields. In and around Pimentel we saw 10’s of thousands Franklin’s Gull. On beaches and over the sea other species like Kelp and Grey-hooded Gull, Peruvian Pelican and Band-tailed (Belcher’s) Gull can be found. A few Brown Pelicans were also found with the more common Peruvian Pelican. The marshes and fields hold species like Coastal Miner (endemic), Many- colored Rush Tyrant, Least Seedsnipe, Yellowish Pipit, Wren-like Rushbird and Tawny-throated Dotterel. Further south in Puerto Etén birding from the pier is recommended. A lot of sea birds can be seen here. Yet further south a breeding colony of Blue-footed and Peruvian Booby and Peruvian Pelican can be found at Punto Etén. Here is also a breeding station for Humboldt Penguin, not tickable unfortunately.

Band-tailed Gull Larus belcheri Many-colored Rush Tyrant Tachuris rubrigastra

Blue-footed Booby Sula nebouxii and Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus Rio Chonta (Cajamarca) Not far from Cajamarca is the Rio Chonta valley. This is an easily accessed site for the rare and local Grey-bellied Comet (endemic). We only saw one bird during our morning here. The canyon is also a good place for White-winged Cinclodes and Torrent Tyrannulet. Birding along the stream in the canyon was rewarding and produced species like Black (endemic), Giant Hummingbird, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail (endemic), Black-crested Tit-Tyrant, White-browed Chat-Tyrant, Peruvian Sierra Finch and the common (here) Band-tailed Seedeater. In Cajamarca we stayed at Hotel Hazienda Yanamarca, a very nice hotel a few kilometres south of the city. In the evening we heard Koepcke’s Screech-Owl here.

Black-crested Tit-Tyrant Anairetes nigrocristatus Black Metaltail Metallura phoebe Further up-stream in the upper section of the canyon we found birds like Mountain Caracara, Andean Hillstar and Mourning Sierra Finch.

San Marcos (Cajamarca) About 60 kilometres south of Cajamarca where the road serpentines down towards the small town San Marcos is a ravine on the left side of the road. This is apparently a good site for Great Spinetail but unfortunately we missed it. We did however have a few good birds like Buff-bridled and White-winged Black Tyrant. Black-necked Woodpecker is also possible here. Along the road from Cajamarca to San Marcos is a small lake called Laguna Suyuscocha. Here we found the only Andean Coot that we saw during our trip and White-tailed Shrike-Tyrant was also present here.

Buff-bridled Inca Finch Incaspiza laeta Cajamarca – Celendín – Balsas (Cajamarca and Amazonas) We birded a few places along the road. First from Cajamarca to Celendín we stopped at La Encañada. The best birds but certainly not the only ones was Shining Sunbeam, Sword-billed Hummingbird (the only one seen on this trip), Giant Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer. We also heard (saw?) Rufous Antpitta of the cajamarcae-subspecies. We also saw the endemic Rufous-eared Brush Finch. Band-tailed Sierra Finch and Mountain Caracara were both seen along the road towards Celendín.

Rufous-eared Brush Finch Atlapetes rufigenis Shining Sunbeam Aglaeactis cupripennis From Celendín to Balsas we birded along the road. We stopped at a few places in the morning (closer to Celendín) and then birded our way down to Balsas which is in the Marañon valley. The habitat was progressively drier the closer to Balsas we came. This is because the west slope of the valley sees very little rain. Never the less it produced some nice birds like Bare-faced Ground Dove, Black-necked Woodpecker (endemic), Grey-winged and Buff-bridled Inca Finch (endemics), Chestnut-backed Thornbird (endemic), Jelski’s Chat-Tyrant and Dusky-capped Flycatcher. Close to Balsas 2 Pacific Pygmy Owls showed themselves very nicely.

Balsas (Amazonas) We spent New Year’s Eve and Day in Balsas. As it turned out a very memorable New Year’s Eve. We stayed at a very simple establishment, basically walls, roof and a bed. The restaurant was a very simple place yet an extraordinary experience or as expressed by Boris: ”Well, it’s not even a house”. Nevertheless we had a good home cooked dinner from the open fire.

Marañon (Peruvian) Pigeon Patagioenas oenops View of Balsas The main target in Balsas is the rare (BirdLife estimates a population between 350-1500 individuals) Yellow-faced Parrotlet. Which we all eventually managed to see well. An Andean Gull flew by the river and we also saw a few Marañon Pigeon. Further east towards Abra Barro Negro we stopped and found the Marañon Crescentchest.

Marañon Crescentchest Melanopareia maranonica Abra Barro Negro (Amazonas) The road from Balsas at about 900 m to the high pass of Abra Barro Negro at 3500 m above sea level is to say the least adventurous. It serpentines its way up the mountain side, the views are breath- taking if you can enjoy them while riding the narrow road with very steep slopes on the side. We birded a few places along the road but the real reward is when you get to and around the pass. The habitat is humid montane forest. Unfortunately for us it was very foggy when we were here but we still had some good birding. We found birds like the endemics Coppery Metaltail and Russet- mantled Softtail. Other birds included Andean Guan, White-throated Quail-Dove and hummers like Purple-throated Sunangel, Glowing Puffleg and some of us also saw a Coppery-naped Puffleg (endemic).

Russet-mantled Softtail Thripophaga berlepschi

Andean Guan Penelope montagnii Leymebamba - Jaén Along the road from Leymebamba to Pedro Ruiz we stopped at a couple of fields with orange flowers. Both places had hundreds of . Species included White-bellied and Spot- throated (endemic) Hummingbird, Little and Spot-throated Woodstar and the very common Sparkling Violetear.

Spot-throated Hummingbird Leucippus taczanowskii Little Woodstar Chaetocercus bombus Along the road from Pedro Ruíz to Jaén we were lucky to see Fasciated Tiger Heron. In a tree were 2 Bat Falcons perched. Fairly close to Pedro Ruiz was an area with seemingly very nice moist forest habitat. This area is well worth exploring. We only stopped for a short time and saw e.g. Blue-black Grosbeak. Closer to Jaén in drier habitat we found Little Inca Finch and Red Pileated Finch.

Jaén (Cajamarca) In Jaén we stayed at Prim’s Hotel. We birded a few different places in the vicinity of Jaén. 3 km north of the city is some rice fields and with some scattered (sewage?) ponds. Here we had birds like Wood Stork, Purple Gallinule, Paint-billed Crake and Spotted Rail. West of Jaén we birded the so called antenna road. Along the road we saw, after some hard work, 2 Tataupa Tinamou. Here we also had Marañon Slaty-Antshrike, Black-capped Sparrow of the nigriceps subspecies, Grey-chinned Hermit and Russet-crowned Crake. South of the city the habitat is a bit drier. We stopped at about 5 km south and managed to find the endemic Chinchipe Spinetail, Tawny-crowned Pygmy Tyrant and Little Inca Finch.

Paint-billed Crake Neocrex erythrops Wood Stork Mycteria americana About 50 km north of Jaén past the small town of Chirinos you can still find some nice forested areas. E.g. we found White-winged Brush Finch of the distinct subspecies paynteri, Red-billed Parrot and Chestnut-bellied Thrush. We also heard Scaled and Plain-backed Antpitta. On the evening of January 2nd Anders 40th birthday was celebrated with cake (Peruvian style) and Pisco!

White-winged (Paynter's) Brush Finch Atlapetes leucopterus ssp. paynteri Pomacochas and surroundings (Amazonas) In Pomacochas we stayed three nights at Las Brisas. The town is over-seeing the lake with the same name. At the pier there is a reed which holds Plumbeous Rail and Subtropical Doradito. In the surrounding grassland we found Puna Snipe, Andean Lapwing and Grassland Yellow Finch.

Subtropical Doradito acutipennis Andean Lapwing Vanellus resplendens Close to Pedro Ruíz we passed a place where there seemed to be a salt lick, 100’s of Scarlet-fronted Parakeet and Scaly-naped Amazon were flying around here. Going from Pedro Ruíz to Pomacochas you pass by Huembo Interpretation centre which is managed by ECOAN. They have hummingbird feeders which holds a lot of hummingbirds. During our short stay we saw 10 species including the very rare and local Marvellous Spatuletail (endemic). Other species seen included Purple-throated Sunangel, Little Woodstar, Violet-fronted Brilliant and White-bellied Hummingbird.

Marvellous Spatuletail Loddigesia mirabilis

A few kilometres down towards Pedro Ruíz there is a gravel road to the right leading to San Lorenzo and the so called Rio Chido trail. The walk up here is quite strenuous at least in pouring rain. Despite bad stomach and not feeling well Christian managed to join us on this walk. We had a very rainy morning here but still managed to get some good birds. Pale-billed Antpitta (endemic) called and eventually one showed very well. Other birds seen were Violet-throated Starfrontlet, Yellow-billed Cacique and Drab Hemispingus.

A few kilometres down the road towards Abra Patricia is road going to Yambrasbamba. Around here is still some very good habitat and we had two good visits to the area. The road we followed eventually came to a quarry. Here we heard several Rusty-tinged Antpitta (endemic). We also saw Golden-headed Quetzal, White-capped and Straw-backed , Black-eared Hemispingus and Emerald-bellied Puffleg. The quarry itself is a white sand area which could be very interesting to explore further.

Abra Patricia (Amazonas) The Abra Patricia reserve is owned and managed by ECOAN. We stayed two nights at the owlet lodge. The pass is at about 2400 m. This is the now famous place for the enigmatic Long-whiskered Owlet. During our stay here the weather was to say the least bad. Raining almost constantly. When we arrived they immediately showed us Chestnut Antpitta (endemic) that come to feed just close to the road. We also heard Rusty-breasted Antpitta. The first day we birded mainly along the road. We had e.g. Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant, Inca Flycatcher (endemic), a male Royal Sunangel (endemic), White-collared Jay and Strong-billed Woodcreeper. Around the lodge were a lot of hummingbirds attracted by the feeders. Around the lodge we also saw Tayra and Black Agouti and Rufous-banded Owl was calling in the morning.

Speckled Hummingbird Adelomyia melanogenys Fawn-breasted Brilliant Heliodoxa rubinoides The second day we stayed in the reserve. The morning was spent on ”Monkey Trail”. Here we had birds like the endemics Lulu’s Tody-Flycatcher and Rusty-tinged Antpitta. Around the lodge we had a few Yellow-scarfed Tanager (endemic), Amethyst-throated Sunangel, Andean Tyrant and Rufous- capped Thornbill.

Yellow-scarfed Tanager Iridosornis reinhardti Amethyst-throated Sunangel Heliangelus amethysticollis In the evening we birded down along ”Owlet Trail” in hope for the elusive owlet. The weather improved a little bit and our hope increased. Along the trail and waiting for the dark we found Ochre- fronted Antpitta (endemic), White-backed Fire-eye and tawny-bellied Hermit. From dusk we waited for what seemed forever. Suddenly a faint hoot far away. We followed the track without lights and with all the raining the last days it was more of a stream than an actual trail. Eventually we came closer and we could all hear the hoot of the LONG-WHISKERED OWLET. We tried hard but could not locate the bird. Happy, wet and tired we walked back to the lodge and a well-deserved dinner.

Afluentes, Aguas Verde (San Martín) Continuing east from Abra Patricia it is well worth to stop at any patch with good habitat. One of the known places is called Afluentes at about 1600 m elevation. We birded along the road here and had a lot of good birds e.g. Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Ecuadorian Tyrannulet and Cinnamon Neopipo. The area seemed very good for and some of the species seen were Huallaga (endemic), Golden- eared, Orange-eared, Bay-headed and Blue-browed Tanager. At a flowering bush along the road we had hummingbirds like Glittering-throated Emerald, Royal Sunangel, Rufous-vented Whitetip and Wedge-billed Hummingbird. Between Abra Patricia and Afluentes we were also very lucky to see Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey just close to the road. At about 1400 m.a.s. there was a house on the left side of the road (coming from Abra Patricia) with a big gravel field on the right side. If you stop here you can ask the boy in the house to show you the birds of the area. He was very helpful with his machete. We saw Ash-throated (endemic) and Yellow-breasted Antwren in this area.

Further down (east) we stopped where the road crosses a small river. This place is called Aguas Verdes and here we saw Yellow-crested Tanager and Striolated Puffbird.

Andean Cock-of-the-rock Rupicola peruvianus Huallaga Tanager Ramphocelus melanogaster

Royal Sunangel Heliangelus regalis Rioja (San Martín) In Rioja we stayed at the Gran Bombonaje Hotel. We made a boat trip on Rio Romero a few kilometres north of the town. The boat trip was arranged by Manolo at the Gran Bombonaje Hotel. Along the river we saw monkeys of 4 species; Common Squirrel Monkey, Brown-mantled Tamarin, Venezuelan Red Howler and Silvery Woolly Monkey. The small stream that we travelled with canoe was probably a tributary to Rio Romero. It was sometimes very difficult to pass fallen trees etc. and the birding was a bit difficult. Nevertheless we saw Limpkin, Greater Ani, White-throated Toucan, Pygmy Antwren and Black, Grey and Band-tailed Antbird.

In the surrounding savannah we saw Rufous-sided Crake, Black-banded Crake, Point-tailed Palmcreeper and Black Caracara.

Venezuelan Red Howler Alouatta seniculus Moyobamba (San Martín) In Moyobamba we stayed at a great place with an excellent view, just south of the city, called Orquidario Wakani. The owner Carlos can be contacted by e-mail: [email protected]

They also had a very good garden for birding, not least a lot of hummingbird feeders. In the garden we saw Rufous-crested Coquette, Blue-tailed Emerald, White-chinned and Golden-tailed Sapphire and Sapphire-spangled Emerald. At dusk we heard Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Band-bellied Owl, Rufous and Spot-tailed Nightjar. All from the garden…

We followed the road about 2 kilometres south to a place called Ruminyaco. Here we walked a trail to the right of the road. Still some good habitat around here. Golden-collared Toucanet, Lettered Aracari and Stripe- chested Antwren among others.

Fiery-throated Fruiteater Pipreola chlorolepidota One morning we made a quite strenuous walk from the Orquidario. Despite some rain after a few hours we managed to see some good birds like Chestnut-throated Spinetail, Northern Chestnut- tailed Antbird, Andean Laniisoma and Fiery-throated Fruiteater.

Yurimaguas Road (San Martín) In Tarapoto we stayed at the very good and newly opened Tucan Suites. Though the hamburger is not recommended in the restaurant, the food was in general very good. Anders was struck with food poisoning and missed almost one day of birding.

Going northeast from Tarapoto on the road to Yurimaguas takes you through some very good habitat. Basically anywhere where it is safe to stop is OK for birding. All the way up to the tunnel and beyond is very good. Wattled Guan, Brown-mandibled Aracari, Black-and-white Hawk-Eagle, White- winged Parakeet, Chestnut-throated Spinetail, Dotted and Yellow-backed Tanager were some of the birds seen here.

Yurimaguas road Cliff Flycatcher Hirundinea ferruginea Continuing further beyond the tunnel going downhill again we eventually came to a place (about 750 masl) where they have hummingbird feeders. We had Koepcke’s Hermit (endemic), Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Green Hermit, Gould’s Jewelfront and Black-eared Fairy at the feeders. The surrounding habitat is of course also good with Golden-headed and Fiery-capped Manakin and more.

Pumarinri (San Martín) The last three nights we stayed at Pumarinri lodge which is located along the road to Chasuta on the banks of Huallaga river. The birding around here is fairly good. The birding is done mainly from the main road. The best birding was towards Tarapoto along a dirt track to the right. Birds found around the lodge included King Vulture, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Long-billed Starthroat, Pale-legged Hornero, Southern Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Sulphur-bellied Neopelma and Olive Oropendola.

Coming from Tarapoto, at the southern end of Juan Guerra there is a dirt track to the left. We followed this road and had some nice birding in dry habitat. Birds seen here were e.g. Ornate Hawk- Eagle, Stripe-necked and Pearly-vented Tody-Tyrant and Rufous Casiornis.

Further south we made a half day trip to Quebrada Upaquihua. The habitat is similar to that around Juan Guerra. We manage to see some good birds including Grey-necked Wood Rail, Planalto Hermit , Plain-breasted Ground Dove, Straight-billed Woodcreeper and Short-billed Antwren.
