I am the fourth youngest in my family of thirteen. My parents were Aboriginal. Both were alcoholics. My childhood memories took place in Charleville, Queensland. In those early days I was always hurt, bruised and cut. I remember being scalded by a pot of tea which went down my back. The memories I have of my mother are both sad and joyous. Sad, because she was often in jail. I remember seeing her sad eyes looking through the bars at me. Apparently, she used to walk up the street drunk, singing Rain drops keep falling on my head. Joyous memories, because one night she took me home from the pub and I cried because I wanted to stay with her. She kissed me good night and gave me twenty cents. One day, my parents took me and my sisters and two younger brothers there. I found out later that they had I left Goondiwindi to go back and to the police station. We had to wait sent her to Kalimna in Brisbane, a live in the Home between 1977 and out the back and then we were on maximum security centre for young 1981 by which time I had fi nished a train bound for who knows where. girls, just because she hung her head Year 10 and then started working in We arrived the next day in a big city in shame. a nursing home.

    6 Indigenous communities buy hotels Among the many damaging effects of the prohibition years, the bans on Aboriginal people drinking in hotels alongside other Australians were the most mortifying. When it became financially possible for Indigenous entities to buy hotels for themselves in the 1970s and 1980s, this history of exclusion was influential in the thinking of Aboriginal organisations and government bureaucrats. Eight hotels were purchased by, or on behalf of, Aboriginal community entities over roughly a 20-year period—the first was the Finke Hotel at Finke in the Northern Territory in 1975. This was followed by purchases of the Oasis Hotel at Walgett (1983), the Transcontinental at Oodnadatta (1986), Mt Ebenezer Roadhouse (1987), Woden Town Club, Canberra (1988), the Crossing Inn, Fitzroy Crossing (1989), Daly River Hotel Motel (late 1990s) and the Wayside Inn at Timber Creek (1999). The most recent purchase of a licensed hotel was in 2014, when the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and the Ngarluma Yindjibarndi Foundation, both in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, purchased the Whim Creek Hotel between Roebourne and Port Hedland.1 1 The purchase of the hotel ($1.7 million) includes an accommodation complex (The West Australian 2014). From eighteen, he spent seven years working at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, until he decided it was time “to stop dealing with other people’s programs and make some of my own”. In 1977, he was granted entry into Australia’s prestigious Film Television and Radio School, completing the three-year course with Diplomas in Production and Directing. De Heer’s first film was the children’s feature `Tail Of A Tiger’ (1984), SYNOPSIS which attracted both critical and commercial success and played at the Berlin Kinderfest. ‘Incident At Raven’s Gate’ It’s 1922; somewhere in Australia.
