She is an assistant professor at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, where she teaches American lit- erature, language teaching pedagogy and English for the sciences. Her research is in trauma studies; she focuses specifically on representations of trauma in Native American literature. She is the author of Other Cultures of Trauma: Meta-metropolitan Narratives and Identities (2007). She is currently working on a book on the politics of trauma in Louise Erdrich’s most recent fiction. Jacques Pothier is a professor of American literature at the University of Versailles Saint- Quentin-en-Yvelines, where he is a member of the chcsc (Centre d’Histoire Culturelle des Sociétés Contemporaines) research group. He is a vice-president of the Institut des Amériques (France). He has published two books, William Faulkner : essayer de tout dire (Paris, Belin, 2003) and Les nouvelles de Flannery O’Connor (Nantes, France, Le Temps, 2004). His fields of research cover the literature of the South, interactions between the literature and history of the South and Latin-American literature, modernism and post-modernism, litera- ture and the visual arts, the theme of space, the epistemology of American Studies, the role of literature in the construction of ethnic, local or national identities and as privileged field for cultural transfer. He is involved in the edition of the works of William Faulkner in la Pléiade, Gallimard. Emir Delic is an assistant professor at Saint-Anne University and a researcher associated to the research chair on francophone literatures and cultures in Canada. Emir Delic has a Ph.D. in French literature and critical theory from the University of Ottawa. His research interests are the institutional stakes of minority literatures and the philosophical approaches to the poetics of three genres (the tale, the essay, travel writing). His current research is on the links between identity and otherness in Franco-Canadian literature. His most recent publication is a special issue of the journal @nalyses, co-directed with Lucie Hotte and Jimmy Thibeault, entitled “Devenir soi avec les autres. Identité et altérité dans les littératures francophones du Canada” (@nalyses, vol. 6, no 1, winter 2011 [on line: www.revue-analyses .org]). WWe find that the size of the indigenous population varies dramatically de- pending on the measure of indigeneity used, and that using multiple measures captures distinct modes of indigeneity. Using latent class analysis, we find that contemporary indigenous classification clusters around four types, which we characterize as Traditional Indians, Indigenous Mestizos, New Indians, and Non-Indigenous. Traditional Indians tend to be indigenous on virtually all indicators, and they are especially poor, dark, and rural. Indigenous Mestizos tend to speak an indigenous language, but self- identification as indigenous is tenuous. New Indians assert an indigenous identity despite their frequent lack of linguistic knowledge and close indigenous ancestry, and they are as urban, educated, and light-skinned as the Non-Indigenous. The analysis ad- dresses sociological concepts of ethnic boundaries, assimilation, mestizaje, and symbolic ethnicity and discusses the implications of distinct modes of indigenous ethnicity. .................................................................................................................. Although ethnic boundaries are fluid in the real world, states strictly define eth- nic groups through their censuses on the basis of one or two questions. By creat- ing ethnic categories, such as indigenous, states estimate its population composition but also shape representations of the nation and its identity (Loveman 2014; Wimmer 2013).

Using original documents I gathered in research trips to Chile and Spain, I am able to reconstruct the debates that went on both sides of the Atlantic over funds, protection from ’ th pirates, and indigenous slavery that so defined Chile s formative 17 century. While my conclusions are unique, frontier residents from Paraguay to northern New Spain were also dealing with volatile indigenous alliances, threats from European enemies, and questions about how their tiny settlements could get and keep the attention of the crown.

FLAIRS-29 continues the tradition of previous FLAIRS conferences with a high quality program. The call for papers attracted 195 paper submissions (44 to the general conference and 151 to the special tracks), and 36 poster abstracts. Special tracks are a vital part of the FLAIRS conferences, with 16 being held at FLAIRS-29. All papers were reviewed by at least three reviewers, and were coordinated by the program committees of the general conference and the special tracks. The accepted submissions include 102 full papers (25 from the general conference and 77 from the special tracks), 20 short papers presented as posters (5 from the general conference and 15 from the special tracks), and 24 poster abstracts. In addition to the diverse assortment of papers, one of the highlights of the program are the invited speakers. Our General Conference Invited Keynote Speakers are Sumi Helal (University of Florida, USA), Matthew Johnson (Florida Institute for Human & Machine Cognition, USA), and Kristin Tolle (Microsoft Research Outreach, USA).
