The Priest's Devilish Curse a Thousand Years Ago, a Slavic The Priest's Devilish Curse A thousand years ago, a Slavic people called the Obotrites lived around here and in the forests of western Mecklenburg. One day, German warriors invaded their territory, and it wasn't the first time that happened. Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, had been lusting for their fertile land for a long time. The Saxons outnumbered the Obotrites and their king, who were no match for the Saxon army. Niklot, which was the name of their king, burned down his castle and fled across the lake with his followers. After their victory, the Saxon conquerers forbid everything that was not part of their own culture and life-style. So the Obotrites were forbidden to pray or make sacrifices to their ancients gods, under penalty of death. The Obotrites thought that was sacrilegious. Quite a few of them rather lost their life than betray their own gods. One day, the Obotrite king's son snuck to the temple, stealthily like a thief. Despite the ban, he wanted to find solace in prayer by worshipping his god. He heard a noise coming from the inside of the temple. It was the noise of splintering and breaking wood. The Obotrite prince, casting all caution aside, hurried inside. Horrified, he saw a Christian priest shatter to pieces a statue of the Obotrite god that was carved out of wood. Rage and despair overpowered the king's son. He tore his sword out of its sheath and struck away at the priest. The priest sank to the ground next to the shattered idol, covered with blood. But before he closed his eyes for all eternity, he raised both his hands into the air as if he wanted to conjure up the fiend. And he uttered a terrible curse. The priest cursed the king's son to take on the despicable figure of a dwarf. And he could only be freed from this ghostlike existence if the son of Christian wiped the priest's blood off his sword. At the very moment that the priest died, the prince turned into a dwarf. The blood stains on his sword turned to rust. For many hundreds of years, the cursed prince has been living as a ghost on the little island in the lake of Schwerin, which was the home of his ancestors. He is still waiting for an innocent Christian's son to deliver him from his curse. Many have tried and tried earnestly, but to this day no one has managed to redeem the little dwarf warrior known as the Petermännchen. Erika and Jürgen Borchardt. • An Analysis of the Fitting from Haliczany in the Context of Other Early Medieval Finds from Selected Areas of the Western Slavic Territories1

AN ANALYSIS OF THE FITTING FROM HALICZANY IN THE CONTEXT OF OTHER EARLY MEDIEVAL FINDS FROM SELECTED AREAS OF THE WESTERN SLAVIC TERRITORIES1 ZBIGNIEW ROBAK The paper presents some remarks on the chronology and spatial distribution of the late avar, carolingian, and great Moravian finds in selected areas of the Western Slavic Territories. The main subject of this paper is to analyse a particular item found in haliczany, chełm county in Poland. The fitting fromh aliczany has already been subjected to typological and chronological analyses twice. in each case, however, it led the authors to entirelly different conclusions and since the space for its interpretation remains broad, it requires some clarification. The purpose of the study is to indicate possible origins of the fitting fromh aliczany in terms of both typology and the route it travelled to finally reach the areas of today eastern Poland. There are two competing explanations that are examined in this paper concerning either carolingian or nomadic origins of the item in question. in the methodological dimension the paper provides arguments in favour of considering even single finds in a context broader than only stylistic speculations, including also cultural, historical, and when possible also ‘geopolitical’ determinants. key words: early Middle ages, central europe, late avar culture, carolingian culture, Slavic culture. : : SLAV AND GOTH, 569 or ill-natured lamas, and they are especially worshiped with bloody sacrifices and red-colored substances "Rowan tree and red threid, Gars the witches tyne their speid." —The Gazetteer of Sekhim, p. 356. Large stones in their natural position hold a high place among the sacred objects of the New Hebrides. Sometimes in the island Aurora a stone is smeared with new earth ; in Pentecost and Lepers' Island a stone is anointed with the juice of a young coconut (Cod- rington, Melanesian Anthropology and Folk-lore, p. 183). About American Indians, Mr. James W. Lynd says: "In the worship of their deities paint (with the Dakotas) forms an im- portant feature. Scarlet or red is the religious color for sacrifice, while blue is used by women in many of the ceremonies in which they participate. The down of the female swan is colored scarlet and forms a necessary part of sacrifices" (C. Mallery, "Picture-writing of the American Indians" in Annual Report of Bureau of Ethnol- ogy, 1888-89). As to stone axes found in Italy, Mr. Angelo Mosso says "Among the votive axes which were in use in the stone age I present three stone axes found in Apulia. All these three axes are colored red by means of ferrous ochre, which adhere tenaciously to the surface ; for this reason we must regard them as votive axes. In the tomb of Sgurgola were two arrows colored red with cinnabar" {Dawn of Mediterranean Civilization, p. 134). Taking into consideration all the facts we have mentioned, we may safely conclude that the use of the fish-head in Japan is a survival of primitive animal sacrifice, as we inferred at the start, and thus we may realize how long religious cults continue after their original significance is lost, even though different meanings are assigned to them to meet the altered requirements of the time.

Introduction The Western Slavs once occupied the territory more or less corresponding to the former state of East Germany that is the area roughly between the Oder-Neisse and Elbe-Saale rivers. They are usually called the Polabian Slavs or Wends. They were the westernmost group of the Western Slavs (which includes the Czechs, Poles and Slovaks) who settled the region between the sixth and seventh centu ries. 1 The Polabian Slavs are usually divided into three branches: the Sorbs, who occupied roughly the southern part ofthe former East Germany; the Veleti in the northeast of the region; and the Obodrites in the northwest.2 Most of the Polabian Slavs were germanised in the course of time, and only a small Sorbian minority in southeastern Germany retains its linguistic and cultural identity until the present day.' 1 Dvomik 1974:14; and Gimbutas 1971:124-128; and towmianski 1967:98, 221; and Strzelczyk 1976:139-154.

  • Slavic Raid on Konungahella
CM 2014 ombrukket3.qxp_CM 30.04.15 15.46 Side 6 Slavic Raid on Konungahella ROMAN ZAROFF The article explores the naval raid of the Slavic forces on the coastal norwegian port set - tlement of Konungahella in the mid 1130s. The paper analyses the raid in the context of regional politics and from the perspective of Baltic Slavs. It also encompasses the wider political context of contemporary imperial and Polish politics. It addresses the issue of the timing of the raid, participation of other than Pomeranian Slavs, and the reasons why it took place. It focuses on the reasons behind the raid which are surrounded by contro - versy and various interpretations. The paper postulates an alternative explanation to the politically motivated explanations previously accepted. One of the least known and researched historical events in Scandinavian mediaeval history appears to be the Slavic ride and plunder of the important norwegian port and settlement of Kungahälla-Konungahella 1, that took place around 1135/1136. Be - fore we analyse the reasons, causes and implication of this raid, we will concentrate on some background issues including a short description of the expedition and assault on Konungahella. Sources Regretfully our knowledge about this event comes solely from a single historical source, that being Saga of Magnus the Blind and of Harald Gille by Snorri Sturluson. he was an Icelander who was born in 1179 and died in 1249. The Saga of Magnus the Blind and of Harald Gille is part of a larger work known as Heimskringla – a saga or history of the kings of norway.

Part III: Ritual Actions in Different Areas of Confrontation Hostages in peace processes The purpose of this part of the book is to elucidate how the giv- ing and taking of hostages can be understood within a ceremony (or several ceremonies). The analysis must in part be carried out as a reconstruction because the medieval writers sometimes saw the giving and taking of hostage as irrelevant during negotiations: there were more important events to describe, such as the con- version of heathens. At the same time it is important to under- stand the use of a hostage as a major or essential part of a wider context: the peace process. The central parts of ceremonies are also analysed in this part, the treatment of the hostages, and how they were valued as persons. These ceremonial patterns may have taken altering expressions – regulations, and procedures – in dif- ferent areas of confrontation and must therefore be understood by identifying their contextual factors. Initially Anglo-Saxon areas of confrontation are described and analysed, as well as some other contexts. In particular, it is emphasized that there were specific conditions for each individual conflict, with a subsequent peace, where personal interests may have been decisive for the outcome as well as other social mechanisms related to competitive group- ings. Additional examples will also be taken from other confron- tational areas involving Scandinavians: the Carolingian Empire, Denmark, and Norway. How to cite this book chapter: Olsson, S. 2019.
