Mekawy for his valuable remmaarks he provided mmee. -39- SHEDET Issssuue nunu.. 7 (2020), ppp.. 39─55 Magda GAD SHEDET (7) INTRODUCTION According to a study that dealt with the origin of the rites of hunting the king's enemies in the domain of myths and religious texts, 1 it has been proven that this rite was traced back to one of the roles played by Akr(w). 2 Regardless of the fact that the catchers, responsible for catching the dead, the foes of Osiris and Rea, or the real enemies of the king, they have been equated and identified with many gods in texts dating back to the Middle Kingdom Coffin Texts and to the New Kingdom Book of the Dead; 3 the god Akr, the most ancient of them all, was also equated with the catchers, though related with the dead in many phases. Therefore, it seems that Akr is the clue to the origin of this rite. Two groups of spells from the Old Kingdom-dating Pyramids Texts highlight the relationship of Akr(w) and the dead. The first group contains spells that refer to Akr setting the dead free: (…..) Wn n.k awy Akr … pr.k Hr xrw Inpw 4 "The doors of Akr are opened for you (…) you come forth at the voice of Anubis".5 The second associated with the earth-gods hindering the dead while ascending to heaven: n nDr.t(w).k6 in Akrw 1 Depending on texts and scenes, this idea changed as nets and traps are variously involved: catching the dead, catching the wicked souls, catching the enemies of the gods, catching the real foes of the king. Furthermore, the notion of catching appears also in the mythological conflict of Horus and Seth and in the story of Osiris: see Gad., ASAE 86, (2015), 179-209. See fig.6, where three baboons are pulling a net filled with fishes. 4 The vignette of BD 117 depicts the god Anubis leading the dead towards a false door representing the entrance of the Netherworld (Faulkner, The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, 112). Frankfort mentions that the earth opens its gates when Anubis, the god of the necropolis, calls for the dead king who passes through the sacred region of Abydos, where the kings of earlier dynasties were buried, and finds the entrance to heaven. February 9, 2020 THE SUPREMACY OF BA‘AL OVER MOT IN UGARITIC CYCLE OF COSMOGONIC MYTHS AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE OLD TESTAMENT Abstract The supremacy of Ba‘al over Mot in Ugaritic Cycle of Cosmogonic Myths was a prominent tradition within the world of the ancient Near East. This custom projects Ba‘al as the god of fertility and rain, but Mot as that of death and underworld. Since the world of the time was agrarian, most of the peoples involved in the worship of Ba‘al for bumper harvests but cast aspersion on Mot. The paper, therefore, claims that the incessant drifting away by ancient Israel from Yahweh for the worship of Ba‘al was on account of this cultural influence from the surrounding nations. The paper employed the canonical approach which interprets the biblical text in its canonical context, to analyse the influence of this type in the OT setting. In this direction, the writer examined ancient Ugarit from the perspective of archaeology. The paper also considered lexical analyses of the concepts of “Ba‘al” and “Mot” from the general worldview of the ancient world, especially within the cultural understanding of the people of Israel. The basis of this analysis was to identify possible supremacy of Ba‘al over Mot, the god of the dead. The writer finally investigated the possible areas of influence and the paper identified the following elements, namely, naming off some towns and cities after Ba‘al within the geographical locations of ancient Israel, worship of Ba‘al beginning from Israel’s contact with the Moabites in the wilderness and throughout the Judges and prevalence of Ba‘al worship during the United Kingdom and the time of Monarchy.

    MONO-, PAN-, AND COSMOTHEISM: THINKING THE 'ONE' IN EGYPTIAN THEOLOGY Jan ASSMANN* That we may speak of Egyptian 'theology' is everything but self-evident. Theology is not something to be expected in every religion, not even in the Old Testament. In Germany and perhaps also elsewhere, there is a heated debate going on in OT studies about whether the subject of the discipline should be defined in the traditional way as "theology of OT" or rather, "history of Israelite religion".(1) The concern with questions of theology, some people argue, is typical only of Early Christianity when self-definitions and clear-cut concepts were needed in order to keep clear of Judaism, Gnosticism and all kinds of sects and heresies in between. Theology is a historical and rather exceptional phenomenon that must not be generalized and thoughtlessly projected onto other religions.(2) If theology is a contested notion even with respect to the OT, how much more so should this term be avoided with regard to ancient Egypt! The aim of my lecture is to show that this is not to be regarded as the last word about ancient Egyptian religion but that, on the contrary, we are perfectly justified in speaking of Egyptian theology. This seemingly paradoxical fact is due to one single exceptional person or event, namely to Akhanyati/Akhenaten and his religious revolution. Before I deal with this event, however, I would like to start with some general reflections about the concept of 'theology' and the historical conditions for the emergence and development of phenomena that might be subsumed under that term.

    STONE-WORSHIP. BY THE EDITOR. STONES are the oldest monuments of religious worship. We cannot say that primitive man worshipped stones, but we know that he regarded some stones with awe as marking the place of theophanies or revelations. Pillars were erected to serve as bethels, or houses of God, and stones were piled up in heaps or put up in the form of trilithons, sometimes circles of trilithons, to serve as monuments or memorials. Stone-worship is common still among some tribes of the Amer- ican Indians, and we know that in spite of the crudity of their views their sentiments are marked by a deep-seated religious awe. Those who try to trace the psychology of it, discover at the bottom of this primitive form of worship the groping after a purer and more spiritual faith, for which the untrained mind of the savage is not yet capable of finding a proper expression. Pillars, stone piles and cromlechs serve idolatrous purposes among the tribes of the islands of the South Sea and also on the Dark Continent; and if we consider that the most ancient pre- historic monuments in European countries are an unequivocal evi- dence that the Teutons, the Celts, the Slavs, the Mongolians, and also the Semites must, at some time or another, have practiced stone-worship, we come to the conclusion that at a certain phase of man's religious development it must have been all but universal all over the world. We find traces of it preserved in that greatest store-house of religious documents, the Bible.

    Personal Names in the Aramaic Inscriptions of Hatra Enrico Marcato 4 Religious Significance of Hatran Theophoric Names The discussion of Hatran theophoric names in view of their importance for the reconstruction of the Hatrene religious landscape can contribute to a comprehensive (re-)evaluation of its pantheon and religious system.1 As already remarked (Marcato 2016), Hatran personal names supply a remarkable wealth of information on the cultural milieu of Hatra and its internal dynamics, such as the re-elaboration of traditional features and the assimilation of foreign elements. SMITH WINNIPEG THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY By its very nature, language about God must include analogical terms which try to communicate the idea of "God" in ways which man understands. Because man's experiences and cultures have varied so tremendously, it is difficult and dangerous to make generalizations about the ancient Near Eastern concept of god. Rudolph Otto in his study The Idea of the Holy1 found a com- mon mysterium tremendum et facinasum in all religions. This represents a power within things which results in man's special treatment of them. An object might be considered sacred or taboo, but would receive reverence regardless, because of its power. This power within nature, objects or people was perceived in different ways. In most cases it had control over aspects of nature, objects or persons to which it was related. This vital force, or god, was sometimes described in terms of the structure of the culture in which the people lived. These powers were thought to have personalities or wills which were related to one another in ways similar to the social relationships between men. Some powers were higher than others, as a master is above his slave, while others were offsprings of higher and more potent gods. Destructive forces like fire might be described as judges, or the earth as a mother who gives birth to vegetation. It seems natural then, that the chief gods or powers would be described in terms of the highest analogical power on earth: the king.2 The first section of this paper will survey some of the texts which archeolo- gists have found in the ancient Near Eastern world to see how men describe their gods.
