These letters confirm the poet's place in the line of vitalist thought shaped by Schopenhauer, the English Romantics, and Carlyle and further developed by Nietzsche, George Bernard Shaw, Henri Bergson, and D.H. Lawrence. Vital a ism resists precise definition; each theorist advances singular un terminology and application. Schopenhauer's vitalism may be derstood from his concept of cosmic Will; Carlyle's from the essen tial presence of energy, movement, and change in the world. What Mill meant by this was that he thought Browning was self-obsessed and depressed. This criticism affected Browning’s writings throughout the middle of his career by provoking him to formulate dramatic monologues in an attempt to distance himself from the narrators he created. But even though Browning was careful not to overexpose himself, his self-consciousness still made its way through to the reader. Browning exposes himself through his narrators in “My Last Duchess,” “Porphyria’s Lover,” and “Andrea del Sarto.” In each of these works, Browning shows growing comfort with writing in a more personal voice and exposing his social views. By 1887, when Parleyings with Certain People of Importance in Their Day was published, Browning had come to terms with Mill’s criticism.

The family's considerable wealth came largely from a Jamaican sugar plantation and in 1809 the family acquired a 500-acre estate near the Malvern Hills. Elizabeth received an excellent education at home, studying Greek and Latin as well as modern languages, read widely, and participated in family theatrical productions. Though she lead a generally healthy childhood, the family doctor began prescribing opium for a nervous complaint around 1821; the death of her mother in 1828 seemed to aggravate that condition. Forced to sell the estate due to severe financial losses in the early 1830s, Barrett's father resettled his family in London and in 1838 Elizabeth's first volume of poetry, The Seraphim and Other Poems appeared, published under her real name.

The purpose of this research is to explore the poet’s concept of religion and demonstrate how this is reflected in his poetry. This paper demonstrates that Browning fluctuates between faith and doubt, and yet he is clearer and more confident of his faith than his doubt. In general, Browning’s faith mainly stems from his personal conviction, while his doubts spring from his surroundings in the Victorian society.
