Asolo is Browning's microcosm, an ideal city, almost pure stage and theatre, where the civic and religious buildings, the castle, the church, the convent and the fortress, are piled close together within the walls, and set on top of a hill overlooking the plain of Treviso below. In looking at the way Browning used this city-I call it a city although at the time it had only a few thousand inhabitants, and is hardly any larger today-I want to separate the real city, visited briefly once in 1838 and again forty years later, from the ideal city, the setting of Pippa Passes and the other poems. Howdid Browning come to Asolo, what did he find there, and why did he return? In his introduction to More than Friend, his edition of the letters of Brown- ing and Katharine de Kay Bronson, Michael Meredith describes Browning's first and subsequent visits to the city1'. Educational Foundation one of the great events of his life, an experience as precious to his heart as to his mind. To me there is something like a magical spell in those very initials, C.R.B. (Commission for Relief in Belgium), since I saw them on those sacks in which America during the war actually sent us our daily bread. I felt attracted to the country from which the sacks came, and the attraction constantly increased while I was trans- lating into French a book you all know, written by your former ambassador or minister, Mr. Brand Whitlock, on Belgium under the German Occupation, and dealing exten- sively with the memorable work of the American commis- sion. The heart of the patriot, therefore, was longing to see your country, but to the same C.R.B. the mind of the ’A series of four lectures delivered at the Rice Institute on December 9, 10, 11, and 12, 1925, by Paul de Red, Professor of English and Modern Literature at the University of Brussels. These particular lectures were also included in courses which Professor de Reul, in hi3 capacity a3 Exchange Professor on the C.R.B. Educational Foundation, gave at a number of American colleges and universities during the academic year 1925-26. -

ROBERT BROWNING ―MY LAST DUCHESS‖ Course: ENGL 120 Robert Browning Genre Poetry Plays Style Victorian Themes • Multiple perspectives • Relationship between art and morality Robert Browning (1812–1889) Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, England. His mother was an accomplished pianist. His father, who worked as a bank clerk, was also an artist, scholar, antiquarian, and collector of books and pictures. Much of Browning's education came from his well-read father. It is believed that he was already proficient at reading and writing by the age of five. A bright and anxious student, Browning learned Latin, Greek, and French by the time he was fourteen. From fourteen to sixteen he was educated at home, attended to by various tutors in music, drawing, dancing, and horsemanship. In 1828, Browning enrolled at the University of London, but he soon left, anxious to read and learn at his own pace. Robert Browning (cont.) In 1833, Browning anonymously published his first major published work, Pauline, and in 1840 he published Sordello, which was widely regarded as a failure. He also tried his hand at drama, but his plays, including Strafford, which ran for five nights in 1837, and the Bells and Pomegranates series, were for the most part unsuccessful. Nevertheless, the techniques he developed through his dramatic monologues – especially his use of diction, rhythm, and symbol – are regarded as his most important contribution to poetry, influencing such major poets of the twentieth century as Ezra Pound, T. Master of Arts (English), August, 1974, 62 pp., bibliography, 6 titles, This thesis is concerned with the establishment of an underlying philosophy for Robert Browning's many themes. It asserts that a notion found in II Corinthians 3:6, "the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life," is basic to ideas such as Browning's belief in the superiority of life over art, of the wisdom of the heart over the intellect, and of honest skepticism over unexamined belief. The sources used to establish this premise are mainly the poems themselves, grouped in categories by subject matter of art, love, and religion. Some of his correspondence is also examined to ascertain how relevant the philosophy was to his own life.
