KNOW YOUR BODY KNOW YOUR STYLE Our bodies are classified according to certain specific types of silhouettes. You will learn about your body type, the clothes that favor each silhouette and those that should definitely be avoided. Your body shape may have traits of two types of silhouettes. Stand in front of a full-length mirror in your underwear and carefully study your body shape. Regardless of whether you are slim or plump, your body will tend to predominantly conform to one of the body types described below. Knowing your silhouette, you will be able to know what type of outfits that will make you look great, and which ones you should avoid as they throw the shape of your body off balance. 2020 Playfication Learning, LLC © PagePage 1 of 1 8 of 8 HOURGLASS SHAPE This type of female figure is typically considered the perfect figure because it is the most proportionate. It is the most versatile body shape and practically everything that women with this figure wear looks good on them. However, you should avoid falling into exaggerations that unbalance your body. You have an hourglass figure, when your shoulders and hips measure the same, and your waist is narrower. You have a balanced and symmetrical body. Clothes that lengthen your body will accentuate your figure and make you look great. What to wear: 1. Wrap dresses and “A” shaped skirts 2. Dresses with a defined waist and knee-length skirts highlighting your curves 3. Solid colors 4. Two-piece dresses 5. Shirt dresses with a waist belt 6. Small pleated, straight, hip, high-waisted pants, and capris if you are taller than 1.65m or 5.4ft. 7. Straight or pencil skirts 8. Form fitting clothes 12. V-necks 13. Long necklaces 14. Always remember to add volume to your torso. You must balance the narrowness of your shoulders with the width of your hips, so that the visual weight falls on your torso. Your figure lends itself to wearing colorful blouses or shirts, sweaters, and jackets, with lots of texture and prints. What to wear: 1. "V" necks 2. Women: a modest cleavage, because what you want is to add volume, taking care not to appear vulgar. You can look sexy, but at the same time classy 1. Colors and prints that add volume, bright colors, or striking prints, but at the bottom wear solid and darker colors 2. Pleated skirts, miniskirts, or shorts Page 3 of 8 INVERTED TRIANGLE | TRAPEZOID BODY Your body has a broad back, with narrow hips and usually long limbs and sometimes flat glutes. The torso is often short. Your body requires that you visually balance your upper body with your waist and legs. Therefore, what favors you most are textures and all that adds visual weight at the bottom and mark your waist. This type of body is most common among Latina women, as they tend to have a small waist which makes them look very feminine. Your goal with this body type is to balance the hips with the torso so that your shoulders do not look too small. What to wear: 1. Blouses with ¾ length sleeves 2. Draped tops, and tops that fall below the waist 3. Double cuff dress shirts 4. Jackets with decorations on the pockets and one button jackets without shoulder pads and without lapels or with narrow lapels 5. “V” necks without too pronounced neckline, “strapless” necklines 6. Wide belts if you are slender 7. Broad suspenders, to make the shoulders look narrower 8. Dresses with an empire cut, as they define the narrowest part of your body, and bubble or tulip type dresses 9. Loose skirts, tiered skirts, skirts with bold prints and colors, tulip skirts, textured skirts, and pleated skirts, knee length (if you have long legs) and above the knee (if you have short legs) to make your legs appear longer 12. Cargo pants with wide colored hems, pleated pants, and Bedouin or harem type pants, and patterned pants and dark leggings if you are thin 13. Big earrings and long necklaces 15. Large totes that end at the hips, crossbody bags and large bags or satchels 16. You can use light colors at the bottom and dark colors at the top. 17. Jackets with wide lapels Page 4 of 8 H-SHAPED OR RECTANGULAR BODY Your hips and shoulders are balanced with your poorly defined waist, with flat buttocks and small bust. Your type of silhouette requires definition at the hips to make you look more feminine if you are female, with drapes, striking belts that enhance your waist and structured designs at the waist, prints, short jackets and separate pieces that define the waist. The important thing is to enhance your curves and add volume. In the summer you can show off your shoulders and accentuate them. What to wear: 1. Straight lines 2. Use minimalist combinations and never appear bulky 3. Ruffles and layered dresses that will define your curves 4. Light colors, horizontal stripes, and patterns to enhance your hips 5. Dresses highlighting your waist 6. Large, tight, and colored belts that contrast with your outfit to emphasize your waist 7. Long jackets with short skirts or long skirts and short jackets 8. Everything that hides or diminishes your curves Page 5 of 8 ROUND, DIAMOND OR OVAL SHAPED BODY This type of body has very well defined curves, so what you should do is give structure to make it look balanced and aesthetic and hide the parts with greater visual weight such as the abdomen, bust and back. If you have big shoulders, a big bust, wide hips and a wide waist, or thin arms, thin thighs, and flat buttocks, you have this type of body. If you have a heavy body, you should avoid wearing huge clothes to cover your figure. Likewise, if you have a heavy body, avoid fitted clothes because your undesirable love handles will show. What to wear: 1. Tailored jackets, straight skirts, straight blouses or shirts and heavy fabrics 2. Small shoulder pads to add structure to your shoulders 3. Loose, V-neck or square blouses or shirts 4. Two different textures at abdomen level 5. Monochromatic tunics or tunic-type blouses and sweaters 6. Empire dresses, halter-type dresses with a V-neckline, preferably baggy at the bottom 7. Long jackets that cover the abdomen 8.
