The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011
The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 by Sunyoung Yang A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Sunyoung Yang Year of 2015 The Korean Internet Freak Community and Its Cultural Politics, 2002–2011 Sunyoung Yang Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2015 Abstract In this dissertation I will shed light on the interwoven process between Internet development and neoliberalization in South Korea, and I will also examine the formation of new subjectivities of Internet users who are also becoming neoliberal subjects. In particular, I examine the culture of the South Korean Internet freak community of DCinside.com and the phenomenon I have dubbed “loser aesthetics.” Throughout the dissertation, I elaborate on the meaning-making process of self-reflexive mockery including the labels “Internet freak” and “surplus (human)” and gender politics based on sexuality focusing on gender ambiguous characters, called Nunhwa, as a means of collective identity-making, and I explore the exploitation of unpaid immaterial labor through a collective project making a review book of a TV drama Painter of the Wind. The youth of South Korea emerge as the backbone of these creative endeavors as they try to find their place in a precarious labor market that has changed so rapidly since the 1990s that only the very best succeed, leaving a large group of disenfranchised and disillusioned youth. I go on to explore the impact of late industrialization and the Asian financial crisis, and the nationalistic desire not be left behind in the age of informatization, but to be ahead of the curve. -

JARPET (262-122976) Category: 01.05 industry / tools / machines / robots Electronic Pet Children are driven by strong curiosity, and they are especially passionate in observing the nature. However, the fast urbanization process has kept children far away from natural environment, leaving them little contact with various animals. JARPET projects the 3D images of pets, and can interact with kids by multi-sensory technology. Close observation helps children to know about animal behaviors and habits, and develops their passion for the nature. Compared with keeping a real pet, this way costs less and consumes less. When children feel lonely and bored, JARPET is a good companion. Levitated Interface (262-122504) Category: 01.03 audio / video / telecommunications / computer / technical solutions Tangible Computer Interface Imagine a physical object that can float and move freely in the air, unconstrained by gravity. ZeroN is a new interaction element that can be levitated and moved freely by computer in the mid-air space to represent 3D information. Users are invited to place and move the ZeroN just as they can place objects on surfaces. They can place the sun above physical models to cast digital shadows, place a planet that will start revolving based on programmed conditions, or play 3D tangible pong. To realize such a space of zero-gravity, we developed a magnetic and mechanical control system and an optical tracking system. -
High Voltage Transient Protection for Automotive
High voltage transient protection for automotive Comparison of three different protection circuits for low power devices Viktor Lindholm Thesis for Master of Science in Engineering Main field of study: Electrical Engineering Credits: 300 Semester/Year: 2019 Supervisor: Kent Bertilsson Examiner: Mattias O´Nils Course code/registration number: EL039A High voltage transient protection Abstract for automotive 2019-06-27 Viktor Lindholm Abstract Electronics for automotive needs to be able to handle different situations that can occur on the power line, such as high voltage transients. ISO- 16750 and ISO-7637 describes different pulses and tests a system needs to be able to handle. This report compares three different protection circuits that can output +5V and +12V built for low power devices. The circuits use different techniques for protection, one that uses TVS diodes, another that uses a voltage regulator IC with built in protection. The last protec- tion uses P-channel MOSFET’s for protection. The circuits are compared against protection, price and leakage current. The most relevant transi- ents to test a system against are decided to be pulse1, pulse 2a and load dump. A pulse generator consisting of a pulse shaping network and a common drain amplifier is used to create the test pulses. The result shows that all the circuits could protect against pulse 2a and load dump. How- ever, all the circuits did fail against pulse 1 due to an undersized diode for negative voltage protection. The leakage current did not exceed 4µA for two of the circuits in the temperature interval of -40°C to +100°C. -
