LAO1946_Lapinus_Friction_advert_03.indd 1 29/11/16 17:31 Welcome to EuroBrake 2017 in Dresden

Welcome to Dresden, Germany, and the 6th annual EuroBrake conference and exhibition. We are delighted to have returned to the International Congress Center in Dresden - a state of the art conference centre located in the city’s old town on the bank of the River Elbe. Dresden is home to many high-tech companies in sectors including semiconductors and aerospace and is one of Germany’s foremost research locations - the ideal location for EuroBrake 2017. EuroBrake plays an important role within the industry and as we continue to see rapid progress in braking technology, our Technical Programme is crucial to those at the heart of the profession. Since it began in 2012, EuroBrake has grown significantly each year, and in 2016 we welcomed 1,100 international delegates from over 40 countries. This year’s conference offers a compelling agenda, with an increased focus on braking emissions – an important topic that generates significant discussion around the world. We welcome Franck Poisson from French rail operator SNCF to the Opening Ceremony, where he will speak about brake particle emissions in the rail sector. Our Panel discussion, ‘Brake Emissions – a Worldwide Challenge’, will raise some important issues and generate lively debate, while this year’s Strategy Panel will focus on ‘Advanced Modelling for Brake Squeal Prediction’. Last year’s Tutorial sessions were a valuable addition to EuroBrake’s programme so we are pleased to have organised two new Tutorials on Friday – ‘Raw Materials, Formulation and Processing’ and ‘Basics of Brakes and Brake NVH’. These will be of interest both to those new to the industry and also those wishing to update their knowledge and expertise. This year we are delighted to welcome the next generation of engineers into the EuroBrake community through our new ‘Student Opportunities Programme’. In addition to sponsored EuroBrake passes, this fantastic new initiative provides an exclusive lounge, where students will have a chance to network with experienced industry professionals and gain career advice in a relaxed setting – we are extremely grateful to our sponsors who have helped us launch this exciting new programme. We are delighted that you have joined us in Dresden, for what is sure to be an outstanding EuroBrake 2017.

The Characterisation of Particle Emissions in the Railway Domain

Mr. Franck Poisson SNCF – Direction Du Matériel Agence d’Essai Ferroviaire (AEF) Particle emission has a strong impact on air, water and ground quality. The impact on health cannot be ignored as it was estimated in 2012 that fine particles were responsible for 403,000 deaths in Europe.

As air quality is becoming a key issue of environmental impact, consequences on transportation are significant in large cities - industry can be stopped and transportation reduced (car speed, number of , etc). For railway transportation, the main problem occurs in underground networks. Trains are running in tunnels and passengers are located inside the coaches and on the platforms.

European and national governments are acting to develop legislation and regulation. Nevertheless, the new European Directive is not yet accepted by all European countries. Strong limit targets were promised for 2020. In parallel, countries are developing their own legislation - in France for example, the Comité Supérieur d’Hygiène Public has put in place regional plans on air quality. Since 2010, laws are also in place and decree will come in the later years. At the same time, public pressure is also growing, by way of television reporting and newspaper articles, which focus on the public health issue.

Regarding railway transport, several interactions occur when running: wheel / rail, catenary / pantograph, disc / pads, wheel / brake blocks. Then, several materials are in contact: steel, copper, carbon and sintered material. Due to stress and wear, some particles are eroded from components and emitted in the environment. Filters and catalytic converters are now installed on combustion engines, but for particles emitted by friction and wear must be investigated.

The presentation will introduce the key issue of air, ground and water pollution caused by particles. Examples of national laws will illustrate how the regulation is in place. Then, the main sources of particles emission of the railway sector will be presented, while the quantification of sources will also be mentioned. In the case of air pollution due to braking particles, the characterisation of emission on a braking test bench developed by SNCF test department will be investigated.

Future Brake Systems

Dr. Ralf Leiter Director ABS/ESC Mando Corporation This session will explore the future of braking systems with regards to autonomous driving and electrification. Ralf Leiter will speak to delegates about the structure and requirements and the potential of a number of solutions for various brake system manufacturers. Since we have seen a second attempt of introducing a full electronically controlled brake system, lessons have been learned from the system design. Zero drag requirements, recuperation and less pollution requirements will lead to the application of old and new technologies and their combination. Autonomous vehicles and car2x communication open new room for failures, in which the car industry has limited awareness and means to protect the new systems in terms of security and safety. Many learnings can be taken from the IT industry, so Ralf Leiter will also cover software systems used in vehicles, and the likelihood of new software business models for Tier 1 suppliers. This will include diagnosis and update online, Software-Gaps, Fraud, Firewalls, Antivirus, PTI etc.

Chair: Chair: Mr. Harald Abendroth Prof. Yannick Desplanques Consultant, Centrale Lille EuroBrake 2017 Chairman

Panellists: Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Gramstat, NVH Project Engineer, AUDI AG Mr. Theodoros Grigoratos, European Commission, Joint Research Centre Dr. Hiroyuki Hagino, Senior Researcher, Japan Automobile Research Institute Dr. Marcel Mathissen, Environment & Health, Ford Dr. Hans-Günther Paul, Senior Advisor Friction Materials, Akebono Europe Prof. Dr. Georg Ostermeyer, Head of Institute of Dynamics and Vibrations, Technische Universität Braunschweig Mr. Agusti Sin, Product & Process Innovation Manager, ITT Italia

Environmental concerns are increasingly relevant in the automotive mobility industry. Although there is in-depth knowledge on problems surrounding nanoparticles and thermal conversion of organic materials, this session will explore brake emissions including: n The ongoing activities to develop test procedures and test set ups – linked problems and root causes n Brake emissions strongly depend on friction couples – pad material and counterpart – as well load history and load conditions. Knowledge of representative load profiles is crucial for development and evaluation of environmental hazards; heavy focus on extreme situations may mislead research and development n Generation wear debris in the boundary layer; parameters influencing size, quantity and chemistry; pull-out wear debris from the contact area n Chemical analysis of various particle size emissions and related implications n Investigating the dynamics of brake emissions – propagation, their reach and dilution n An estimation of how brake emissions contribute to overall pollution n By using hybrid or electric vehicles, the load to a brake is significantly reduced. How fast will their market share grow and will this lead to a noticeable reduction of overall brake emissions? Considerations will also include electric braking for rail systems n Other relevant research from this sector n Schedule concerning propositions to make brake emissions part of product specifications and legal regulations n Global cooperation and harmonization surrounding braking technology will also be explored

Following a successful EuroBrake in 2016, located in the stylish city of Milan, we bid ‘arrivederci’ to Italy and return to Dresden, Germany in 2017 – the original venue where we first launched EuroBrake in 2012. Dresden is the traditional capital of Saxony and the third largest city in eastern Germany after Berlin and Leipzig. It lies in the broad basin of the Elbe River between Meissen and Pirna, 19 miles north of the Czech border and 100 miles south of Berlin. Sheltering hills north and south of the Elbe valley contribute to the mild climate enjoyed by Dresden. Numerous parks and cultural monuments exist along the Elbe’s course, particularly a steel bridge (1891–93), a cable railway (1898–1901), and a funicular (1894–95). The city is rich with cultural and artistic history; the great operatic composer Wilhelm Wagner debuted a number of works here in the 1800s and, today, an independent light opera company keeps the classical art form modern and fresh. Culture vultures will love the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister and Grünes Gewölbe museums, and architecture buffs will salivate over the mélange of styles reflected in the cityscape.

52 For those visiting Dresden for the first time, a casual stroll around the Old Town is easily achieved from the conference centre and offers delights such as the famous Semper Opera House, known Did you know? for its premieres including major works by Wagner and Strauss, the Fürstenzug, a grand mural of a mounted procession of the rulers of Saxony, and the Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault), a museum Dresden is the third largest city in eastern containing the largest collection of treasures in Europe.
