It is the fourth Italian largest lake and is one of the largest endorheic basins in western Europe. Because of its shallow depth and the absence of natural outflows, the lake, in historical times, alternated from periods of floods to strong decreases of the water level during periods of prolonged drought. Lake water is characterised by a NaCl composition and relatively high salinity. The geochemical and isotopic monitoring of lake water from 2006 to 2018 shows the presence of well-defined seasonal trends, strictly correlated to precipitation regime and evaporation. These trends are clearly highlighted by the isotopic composition of lake water (δ18O and δD) and by the variations of dissolved mobile species.

There was once a region with ver- dant plains watered by rivers and streams, surrounded by high mountains, monasteries, and forests stretching as far as the eye could see. There was, in a word, Tuscany, a region that has always been synonymous with beauty and nature, art and history, especially Medieval and Renaissance history, a land whose fame has spread the world over. And yet, if we stop to look closely, this region offers us many more treasures and new histories, the emotion aroused only by beauty. Because along with the most famous places, monuments and museums, we can glimpse a Tuscany that is even more ancient and just as wonderful, bear- ing witness not only to Roman and Etruscan times but even to prehistoric ages. Although this evidence is not as well known as the treasures that has always been famous, it is just as exciting to discover.     Umbra Institute Trasimeno Archaeology Field School, Summer 2015; in cooperation with DePauw University SUMMER 2015 DIG IN ITALY: ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDY, RESEARCH, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This interdisciplinary program focuses on the topography, history, and material culture of the Lake Trasimeno region. Located in Umbria, the "Green Heart of Italy," Lake Trasimeno's cultural heritage and historical significance extends from the prehistoric period, to the famous battle between Carthage and Rome on its shores in 217 BC, to the modern day. The summer archaeology program, which saw its first iteration in 2014, is based in Castiglione del Lago, a modern town whose Medieval heritage is visible today and whose Roman and Etruscan past waits to be uncovered. Students enroll in two courses, ARFW 350: Archaeological Field Workshop and ARCL 340: Archaeological Heritage of Lake Trasimeno. • The Archaeological Field Workshop provides students with hands-on experience in archaeological field methods, artifact analysis, survey, and heritage protection and presentation. In 2015, two components to this course are planned. Students will gain experience in both components, which are supervised by Umbra Institute faculty, DePauw University faculty, and professional archaeologists, and are supported by officials and citizens of the Comune of Castiglione del Lago. o Excavation and survey in and around Castiglione del Lago and its castle that overlooks the shore of Lake Trasimeno, e.g., the small church inside the castle; a probable Roman villa on the south slopes of the ridge outside the castle fortifications; località Rigutini, a likely sanctuary site along the shore north of town; or località Poggio S. Maria, on slopes overlooking Lago di Chiusi, where bronze coins and stamps have been recovered.

ISAIAH 2, 4 (1198 Anno Domini) The knightly, fortified Offreduccio tower-like palace soared in the air in the upper part of Assisi. This was the home of Clare. It rivaled the height of the façade and bell tower of the adjacent cathedral of San Rufino then being refurbished. 1 The women of the household – Lady Ortolana, Lady Pacifica, Lady Bona Guelfuccio – were working quietly at their chores with the girls when Clare’s uncle Monaldo abruptly burst through the door to their chamber. He looked terrified as he shouted, “The emperor is dead! Henry VI suddenly died! We’re finished!” Clare’s mother, Ortolana, became alarmed and immediately started reciting prayers. So did the others. Clare’s younger sister, Catherine, started crying. Clara , Chiara, Clare – light, clear, clarity. She had always been devoted to the holy life, even as a child. She was only four years old, but understood things far beyond her age. She knew what could happen as a result of the young emperor’s untimely death.
