“On the border between Umbria and sits a charming town built by centuries of history. Castiglione protects Lake Trasimeno, its image mirrored in the water.” The town’s most important landmark is, without a doubt, Palazzo della Corgna (1). Originally a grand villa, it later became the Corgna dynasty’s court palace. Today it is the venue of many important cultural activities and hosts a museum that celebrates the main events of the della Corgna family in frescoes painted by the renowned artist Niccolò Circignani, also known as Il Pomarancio. The Rocca del Leone (2), a military fortress built in the late XII century over the remains of an Etruscan site, is connected to Palazzo della Corgna. The Rocca is a pentagonal building that was modified by Frederick of Svevia to reflect the astronomical sign of Leo. The tower that dominates the entire perimeter of Lake Trasimeno and its enchanting landscape was added in 1310. A medieval town steeped in the atmosphere of times gone by, fascinating and extraordinarily beautiful. People fall in love with Città della Pieve for its authenticity, its gorgeous landscape, fascinating history and amazing art, but also for the tranquil pace of life imposed on it by the surrounding lush and pristine nature. It’s the perfect place in which to discover “the real sense of Italian lifestyle” as National Geographic magazine said. It is also why famous actors, athletes, intellectuals and political figures have chosen to live here. It is impossible not to fall in love with the amazing panoramas, landscapes that have inspired the greatest Renaissance painters and still today attract artists from all over the world. Città della Pieve is the birthplace of Raphael’s teacher, Pietro Vannucci (known as “Il Perugino”), one of the Italian Renaissance’s greatest artists in whose works the local landscape is an outstanding characteristic. Much of his work still hangs in Città della Pieve: the Centro Servizi Turistici Adoration of the Magi in the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi (1), The Baptism of Christ and the Madonna in Gloria tra i Santi Gervasio e +39 0578298840 Protasio in the Cathedral (2) and the Deposition of the Cross at the Museo Civico Diocesano of the Church of Santa Maria dei Servi (4). www.cittadellapieve.org 9

Museum route Città della Pieve is a concentration of monumental, historical and artistic heritage. At the Oratorio di Santa Maria dei Bianchi you will find Pietro Vannucci’s celebrated Adoration of the Magi (1504), while the Museo Civico Diocesano di Santa Maria dei Servi is home to the masterpiece Deposition of the Cross (1517) as well as the collection of Etruscan tombs and urns EVENTS uncovered in the Tomb of San Donnino in Città della Pieve. Then there is the Rocca Perugina (5), a fortification built in 1326, and the 16th century Palazzo della Corgna (3) designed by Galeazzo Alessi. In the city of the Divine Painter there are also interesting museums of contemporary art such as the Il Giardino dei Lauri (Loc. S. Donato), the Spazio Kossuth and the Laboratorio di Cultura Fotografica (6).

Discounted tickets for the Museum route Viale Vanni The curtain goes up on the yearly summer events in June, with the l’Infiorata di San Luigi Gonzaga created by the Terziere Casalino. They use flower petals to create the most amazing designs and paintings on the town’s street beds. There is a different theme each year. July is entirely dedicated to Cavalli Via Beato Giacomo Villa e Cavalieri, a series of equestrian events that aim to educate, amaze and thrill. In August the town evokes its picturesque P.zza Plebiscito past with the Palio dei Terzieri, 13 days of full immersion in an authentic Renaissance atmosphere that culminates in the P.zza Gramsci Historical Procession and the thrill of the Caccia al Toro, or Porta Via Vannucci Bull Hunt, when archers take aim at revolving bull cut-outs. S. Agostino Viale Garibaldi October features an event that entices locals and visitors alike, Viale Cappannini the Zafferiamo, a festival celebrating saffron in all its many uses from painting, to cosmetics and, of course, in the kitchen. Città della Pieve should not be missed as the Città del Natale either, when markets, street artists and decorations enliven the holiday season, the most romantic one of all of Umbria.

Kieran Mulvaney, author and environmentalist, described Paciano to the Washington Post as follows: My first impression, when I got here, is that if Hollywood ever needed to shoot a film in a medieval village, this would be the one. A visit to this lovely town should start in the heart of the historical centre, at Palazzo Baldeschi which houses the information office and TrasiMemo (1), located near the Museo Don Aldo Rossi (2). As one walks through the old streets one is enchanted at every corner by the churches, decorations depicting the Madonna, the little balconies and small shops offering local delicacies and crafts, all of which, together with the City Hall on Piazza della Repubblica blend together seamlessly in a unique medieval way. Upon leaving there are several nice walks and cultural stops, like the Chiesa di Madonna della Stella (3) which houses a delightful Mannerist fresco cycle which recounts a star that comes to rest on the mantle of the Madonna. Coming to this area also gives the www.paciano.org visitor a unique opportunity to discover precious yet often unknown cultural relics, to taste local delicacies and enjoy breathtaking views when walking along the Via Romea Germanica, which was traced in 1200 when it lead from Stade in Germany to Rome, and here connects Castiglione Paciano Eventi e di Paciano del Lago to Città della Pieve. 13

“TrasiMemo” and Museo “Don Aldo Rossi” The TrasiMemo-Trasimeno Memory Bank is a truly special sort of bank which preserves ancient and modern local heritage in several halls with exhibits and workshops. Nearby is the Museo Don Aldo Rossi, which is home to the ancient city gonfalon, made by the Bonfigli bottega in 1450. EVENTS In the museum itself are XVIII century paintings that look like magnificent arras featuring gracious depictions of the Ladies.

A natural terrace overlooking Lake Trasimeno, Panicale is the birthplace of artists and leaders and retains all the characteristics of a medieval castle, the structure perched on Mount Petrarvella. The three ancient squares on three different levels characterizes its layout like so many concentric ellipses. The main square hosts a XV century well (turned into a fountain in the 1900s ) and the impressive Collegiata di San Michele (1), while the XIV century Palazzo del Podestà (2) (home of the Historical Archives) was built on the city’s most panoramic spot on Piazza Masolino, and obviously boasts a breathtaking view. In addition to being one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Panicale has, since 2007, also earned the prestigious Orange Flag from the Italian Touring Club for its important cultural and landscape heritage, and for the many events it hosts: the theatre season, music festivals, food festivals, embroidery courses. +39 0758379531 - +39 075837433 The Renaissance left an indelible artistic mark on Panicale: Il Perugino, Raphael and G. This ancient fishing village, a real gem, is set on the shore between the blue waters of the lake and the green of the surrounding hills. Its location makes it a must for anyone travelling between Umbria and Tuscany going over the pass which gave Passignano its name: Passus Jani, or Passo di Giano, the mythical god of ports. Just outside of town visitors can go hiking, cycling, mountain biking or horseback riding. Pieve di San Cristoforo (1), adjacent to the cemetery on the outskirts of town, is the old parish church of Passignano and dates to the X century. The latest discovery was revealed in October 2015, an important Etruscan tomb found in San Perugia Donnino, just outside of Città della Pieve. Three urns and two sarcophagi containing intact Ponte San Giovanni skeletons were found inside and tests reveal that they date from the middle of the IV century BCE to the early III century BCE. The relics can be seen at the Museo Civico Diocesano di Santa Maria dei Servi.

Il Parco del Lago Trasimeno The largest of the six Regional Parks of Umbria, is one of the most important wetlands areas in Europe for the presence of plant species, fauna and fish of great importance. The total silence and the nature that it encompasses allows life to go on here without having to turn to artificial methods of preservation. It is truly unique. Isola Maggiore Isola Maggiore is under the jurisdiction of Tuoro sul Trasimeno and is the only one of the three islands that has a stable population. It still preserves the unique atmosphere of a 15th century fishing village. In 1211 Saint Francis of Assisi came here at Lent to pray and fast in peace and quiet, and there is now a lovely chapel dedicated to his arrival on the island during a violent storm, marking the place where he landed and knelt down in prayer. One of the feathers in the cap of the island is the Irish-point lace made by the local women. The Isola Maggiore Museum Circuit indicates the most important places to see on the island: Museo del Merletto, Chiesa di S. Michele Arcangelo, Casa del Capitano, Chiesa di S. Salvatore.

Isola Minore This is the smallest of the three islands, and not much is known about it. Privately owned, it is not inhabited. It falls under the jurisdiction of Passignano sul Trasimeno.

Polvese Island The island falls under the jurisdiction of the town of Castiglione del Lago and is the largest of the lake’s three islands. It hosts yearly tourism, environmental and cultural events. It is home to several interesting historical landmarks like the Church of San Secondo, the Olivetano Monastery, the Church of San Giuliano, and a 13th century castle. Worth visiting is the Piscina del Porcinai (a garden of aquatic plants), created in the late 1950s by the landscape artist Pietro Porcinai. The island is furthermore a fine example of sustainable environmental management and organises the educational Parco Scientifico, a fun festival of science featuring environmental research, education and training activities. The island offers a variety of accommodations for a comfortable stay.

The “Bollino del Trasimeno” is made up of three basic elements that characterise the three environmental origins of the products shown on the seal: the lake, Umbria and Italy. Lake Trasimeno is shown as a blue, white and green rainbow over the characteristic hills that surround the lake. Umbria is symbolised by the “green heart”, and the Italian flag’s three colours (red, white and green) stand for the country. Cereals complete the symbols as witness to fine typical produce grown here. Proof of a provenance, Lake Trasimeno, which with this seal of excellence is protected and allow local producers to identify themselves and enhance their standing thanks to a clear and distinctive marking. The Seal of Excellence immediately identifies a product as coming from the Trasimeno area, from Umbria, and from Italy.
