The first is the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars, which in February became the 110th Livery Company in the City of London. It was begun in 2005 as the Guild of Arts Scholars and its membership includes those engaged in the study, curation, collection and trade in antiques, antiquities and objects of decorative and applied art, as well as in associated support businesses such as restoration and conservation, insurance, event organisation, tax and legal advice, packing and shipping. On their website at http://www.artsscholars.org there are reports and photographs of their events past and future, many of which portray formal dinners. They raise charitable funds and encourage appreciation and knowledge of the decorative arts, fostering future excellence through scholarship, and provide a number of educational awards up to about £1,500 a year, as well as supporting publications, exhibitions and other projects. Also in February this year, the Institute for Archaeologists was granted a Royal Charter of Incorporation. Their objective is to act as the professional body for archaeologists, and so their petition focused on showing that they already offer the components of any professional body seeking recognition: accrediting individuals and organisations, measuring compliance with standards, and investigating allegations of unprofessional practice, all through demonstrably robust and fair processes. -

Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 49 1937 CASTLEGUARD SERVICE OF DOVER CASTLE. BY F. W. HARDMAN, LL.D., F.S.A. THE standard historians of Kent all narrate the early history of the office of Constable of Dover Castle and there is remark- able unanimity in their story. According to them the Conqueror, after the forfeiture and imprisonment of Bishop Odo, made a new arrangement for the ward of Dover Castle. He appointed a kinsman of his own, one John de Fiennes, to be hereditary constable and endowed him with numerous knights' fees to bear the charge of his office. John de Fiennes retained fifty-six of these fees in his own hands, but associated with himself eight other knights and bestowed on them 171 fees. This arrangement continued for some time and John de Fiennes was succeeded by his son James de Fiennes and by his grandson John de Fiennes. It was disturbed in the troubled days of Stephen but again restored and continued in the persons of Allen de Fiennes and James de Fiennes. Such in outline is the story told by Lambarde (1570, p. 157), Darell, chaplain to Queen Elizabeth (1797, p. 19), Philipott (1659, pp. 12, 16), Kilburne (1659, p. 79), Somner, Roman Ports and Forts (1693, p. 118), Harris (1719, pp. 372, 484), Jeake, Charters of the Cinque Ports (1728, p. 47), Hasted (1799, IV, 60) and Lyon, History of Dover (1814, II, 87, 192). It has been copied from these authorities by countless other writers of smaller note and is generally believed to-day. And yet the story is completely untrue. -

Rome originally acquired the territory as a result of the defeat of Carthage in the Punic Wars. Expansion of territory and settlement of surplus population were two ideas behind its Romanization. However, North Africa's greatest asset for becoming a province was its large yield of grain. This province furnished most of the wheat for the empire. If something happened to hinder its annual production level then Rome and its provinces would face famine. Unlike most instances of acquiring territory Rome did not try to assimilate the native transhumant population. Instead these inhabitants held on to their ancestral lands until they were forcibly removed. This territory was the most agriculturally productive; unfortunately, it was also the area of seasonal migration for the native people. Lambaesis is important in this scheme because it was the base of the solitary legion in North Africa, the III Legio Augusta. After beginning in the eastern section of the province just north of the Aures Mountains the legion gradually moved west leaving a peaceful area behind. The site of Lambaesis was the III Legio Augusta's westernmost fortress. -

In Britain, as in their other provinces, the Romans constructed a comprehensive network of paved trunk roads (i.e. surfaced highways) during their nearly four centuries of occupation (43 - 410 AD). This article focuses on the ca. 2,000 mi (3,200 km) of Roman roads in Britain shown on the Ordnance Survey's Map of Roman Britain.[1] This contains the most accurate and up-to-date layout of certain and probable routes that is readily available to the general public. The pre-Roman Britons used mostly unpaved trackways for their communications, including very ancient ones running along elevated ridges of hills, such as the South Downs Way, now a public long-distance footpath. -

Weaverdyck 7 The Roman Empire I Introduction The Roman Empire was one of the largest and longest lasting of all the empires in the ancient world.1 At its height, it controlled the entire coast of the Mediterranean and vast continental hinterlands, including most of western Europe and Great Brit- ain, the Balkans, all of Asia Minor, the Near East as far as the Euphrates (and be- yond, briefly), and northern Africa as far south as the Sahara. The Mediterranean, known to the Romans as mare nostrum(‘our sea’), formed the core. The Mediterranean basin is characterized by extreme variability across both space and time. Geologically, the area is a large subduction zone between the African and European tectonic plates. This not only produces volcanic and seismic activity, it also means that the most commonly encountered bedrock is uplifted limestone, which is easily eroded by water. Much of the coastline is mountainous with deep river valleys. This rugged topography means that even broadly similar climatic conditions can pro- duce drastically dissimilar microclimates within very short distances. In addition, strong interannual variability in precipitation means that local food shortages were an endemic feature of Mediterranean agriculture. In combination, this temporal and spatial variability meant that risk-buffering mechanisms including diversification, storage, and distribution of goods played an important role in ancient Mediterranean survival strategies. Connectivity has always characterized the Mediterranean.2 While geography encouraged mobility, the empire accelerated that tendency, inducing the transfer of people, goods, and ideas on a scale never seen before.3 This mobility, combined with increased demand and the efforts of the imperial govern- ment to mobilize specific products, led to the rise of broad regional specializations, particularly in staple foods and precious metals.4 The results of this increased con- It has also been the subject of more scholarship than any other empire treated in this volume.
