ENGLISH COAST DEFENCES GEORGE CLINCH PART I ENGLISH COAST DEFENCES PREHISTORIC CAMPS Round the coast of England there are many prehistoric earthworks of great extent and strength. These fall generally under the heads of hill-top fortresses and promontory camps. The works comprised under the former head are so arranged as to take the greatest possible advantage of natural hill-tops, often of large size. On the line where the comparatively level top developed into a more or less precipitous slope a deep ditch was dug, and the earth so removed was in most cases thrown outwards so as to form a rampart which increased the original difficulties of the sloping hill-side. The latter type of earthwork, called promontory camps from their natural conformation, were strengthened by the digging of a deep ditch, so as to cut off the promontory from the main table-land from which it projected, and in some cases the sides of the camp were made more precipitous by artificial scarping. An examination of these types of earthworks leads to the conclusion that they were probably tribal enclosures for the safe-guarding of cattle, etc.; that, strictly speaking, they were not military works at all, and, in any case, had no relation to national defence against enemies coming over-sea. One finds in different parts of the country a prevalent tradition that the Romans occupied the more ancient British hill-top strongholds, and the name “Caesar‟s Camp” is popularly applied to many of them. If such an occupation really took place it was, in all probability, only of a temporary character. -

Plans of Dover Harbour in Sixteenth Century
Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 49 1937 ( 108 ) PLANS OF DOVER HARBOUR IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. BY ALEC MACDONALD. THERE are in existence at least sixteen contemporary plans or picture-maps, showing work carried out or contemplated on Dover Harbour during the sixteenth century. Ten of them are in the British Museum ; three others are, respec- tively, in the Bodleian Library, in the Public Record Office and among the papers of the Marquess of Salisbury at Hatfield House ; the remaining three, one owned by Mr. Prescott, of Dover, and two by the Dover Harbour Com- missioners, are facsimiles of three of the B.M. plans. The literary evidence, though considerable, is insufficient to enable us to identify all of them, but the reproduction of some of them here is perhaps sufficient excuse for an attempt to do so. The difficulty is added to by the fact that, even in the rare instances in which they are dated or signed, there is seldom any indication whether they represent then existing works or only projects which may or may not have been carried out. The earliest printed account of the making of the harbour is in Holinshed's Chronicle (1578), continued after his death in 1580 by John Hooker, and this is abbreviated in the Histories of Kent of Harris and Hasted. There are more recent and detailed accounts by Lyon (History of Dover, 1814), Statham (History of the Town and Port of Dover, 1899), and J. Bavington Jones (Annals of Dover, 1916). But by far the most complete account is in a paper by the late Mr. -

In Britain, as in their other provinces, the Romans constructed a comprehensive network of paved trunk roads (i.e. surfaced highways) during their nearly four centuries of occupation (43 - 410 AD). This article focuses on the ca. 2,000 mi (3,200 km) of Roman roads in Britain shown on the Ordnance Survey's Map of Roman Britain.[1] This contains the most accurate and up-to-date layout of certain and probable routes that is readily available to the general public. The pre-Roman Britons used mostly unpaved trackways for their communications, including very ancient ones running along elevated ridges of hills, such as the South Downs Way, now a public long-distance footpath. -

Jasna Šimić Osijek, 2012. 1. Sažetak Najvažniji i temeljni element rimske fortifikacijske arhitekture svakako je vojni grad – castrum. Rimljani su bili narod vojnika, kolonizatora i osvjača, pa je rimski građanin u vojnoj obavezi bio veći dio svog života. Iz tih razloga ustroj i izgled vojnog logora pokazuje toliko zajedničkih elemenata s civilnim naseljima. Zidine grada Rima predstavljaju najreprezentativniji primjer gradske fortifikacijske arhitekture u cijelom Carstvu. Murus Servii Tulii (Servijev zid) sagrađen je u ranom 4. st. pr. n. e., a učinkovito je štitio grad do druge polovine 3. st. kad je izgrađen Murus Aurelianus (271.– 275.), zid opsega 19 km koji ipak nije spasio Rim od Alarikove pljačke i razaranja (410.), kao i one kasnije vandalske (455.). U vrijeme Republike rimski castrum (prema Polibiju) ima pravilan pravokutni, gotovo kvadratan oblik; limitiran je i orijentiran na isti način kao i grad te je omeđen jarkom i zidom. Na svakoj strani logora nalaze se jedna vrata. Istočna vrata Porta praetoria i zapadna Porta decumana povezana su decumanom (via praetoria), dok su sjeverna Porta principalis sinistra i južna vrata Porta principalis dextra spojena s via principalis (cardo). Orijentacija glavnih ulica ovisila je o položaju i usmjerenosti logora. Na križanju glavnih osi logora nalazio se praetorium – središte vojne uprave. U vojnom logoru ulica cardo (via principalis) ima veće značenje od decumana. Neki autori smatraju kako osnovne zametke rimskog urbs quadratisa treba tražiti upravo u vojnom logoru. Vojni grad – castrum - slijedi etruščansko iskustvo i kristalizira nekoliko značajnih ideja i praktičnih postavki iz političke i vojne sfere. -

Part IF GROWTH POINTS IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY DOVER EVIDENCE suggests that nearly all the economic and. social indices of Deal were reversed in the case of Dover. As a defensive centre and cross-Channel port the town assumed a growing importance in the eighteenth century. Indeed, a 1721 Atlas specifically pinpointed its castle and the packet boats for France.2 Well before the nineteenth century the Calais and Ostend passages had assumed a major signi- ficance in the life and well-being of Dover, and, in 1805, it was claimed that, 'the money spent by passengers is the chief support of the town' ,3 as against 1811, 'in time of peace this town is a great thoroughfare for persons passing to and from France'.4 Any analysis of the size of nineteenth-century Dover is complicated by the fact that the parish boundary changes in the town have been so intricate that comparable population statistics are difficult to assemble. Various series of figures can be quoted according to the divisions included in the estimates, but in very broad terms the population of Dover increased from 7,709 in 1801 to 41,794 inhabitants in 1901.6 Behind this increase of numbers lay the important functions of Dover as a garrison town, a seaport, a seaside resort, and the principal station on the passage to the Continent, as well as the great works carried on by the state at Dover, from the building of the Admiralty Pier to the completion of the Admiralty Harbour.° Accompanying the growth 'of numbers was an extension of the residential built-up areas. -
