Running July 10-20 and screening 27 features with 8 special guests, JAPAN CUTS 2014 encompasses a thrilling cross section of cinephilic genre oddities, sword-swinging period action, profound documentaries, cathartic melodramas, warped comedies and cutting-edge arthouse cinema made in and around Japan. Guests include superstar performers and independent auteurs opening up in rare Q&As and dynamic parties rocking Japan Society’s historic theater and waterfall atrium. As in past years, the festival dovetails with the 13th New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), co-presenting 13 titles in the JAPAN CUTS lineup July 10-13. JAPAN CUTS 2014 again earns the distinction as “New York’s premiere Japanese cinema event,” every title never before screened in New York City, “unspooling across a kaleidoscopic range of taste and aesthetics” (The Wall Street Journal). Boasting 1 World Premiere, 3 International Premieres, 7 North American Premieres, 6 U.S. Premieres, 5 East Coast Premieres, and 4 New York Premieres, every day of the festival provides a must-see event for the NYC cinephile, follower of Japanese art and culture, and devoted world cinema aficionado alike.

CORK SLIGO DUBLIN GALWAY LIMERICK DUNDALK MAYNOOTH WATERFORD WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2017 The Embassy of Japan is delighted that our collaboration with Access>Cinema has now reached its ninth year, thanks to the support of the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation. Even though over 500 films are made in Japan each year, many of them are never released overseas. Thanks to the tireless work of the team at Access>Cinema we have another incredible line up of films. In 2017 we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Ireland. The celebrations kicked off in January with the visit of Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida to Ireland, which Irish Foreign Minister Charles Flanagan reciprocated in February. The Japanese Film Festival is one of the highlights of the ongoing celebrations. This year’s films will open a door on Japanese life. Her Love Boils Bathwater won a Best Actress Award, at the 40th Japan Academy Awards, in addition to Best Supporting Actress and Best Rookie. The festival’s prestigious line up continues with Japan’s entry to the 2017 Oscars, Nagasaki: Memories of My Son starring Kazunari Ninomiya, star of Japanese boy band Arashi. One of the most unique titles is Happy Hour, a 5 hour highlight which won the Best Actress Award at the Locarno Festival. Of course there is the usual selection of anime titles, including a special preview of Sword Art Online The Movie. We are delighted to have a total of 21 different titles at this year’s Festival showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo, Maynooth and Dublin.

  • THEY SAY NOTHING STAYS the SAME (Aru Sendo No Hanashi)
THEY SAY NOTHING STAYS THE SAME (Aru Sendo No Hanashi) Directed by Joe ODAGIRI 2019/Japan/137 min. 【Story】 Toichi is a boatman who ferries the villagers to a town on the other side of the river. Besides rowing a boat for the villagers all day long, he barely have a communication with others except Genzo, a young neighbor. In the upstream of the river, a large bridge is being constructed. Everybody is excited, but Toichi has mixed feelings about it. One day, Toichi meets a mysterious young girl. Having no family and no place to go, Toichi let her stay with him but this encounter starts to bring about changes to Toichi’s life….. Teaming up with legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle and Oscar winning costume designer Emi Wada, an acclaimed actor, Joe Odagiri’s original story becomes a film with his own direction. 【Director’s Note】 First of all, I primarily had a doubt toward the world that is based on capitalism. Capitalism created competitive society, and I had a feeling that we are living with a sense where convenience is valued most and needlessness is totally unnecessary. Or a feeling that the most important thing is swept away but measuring the value by time and money. This brought me a big uncertainness and vague discomfort about how I am currently living my life. There are many things vanishing behind the development of civilization. As the world becomes more convenient, the tradition and beautiful culture becomes unneeded. The nature gets destroyed and we lose something precious. I desired to figure out, what is the true happiness and what is important in life, through a character of boatman.
