Recent strategies have employed new approaches, including a synthetic look at the five warning passages in the book, dis- course analysis, comparison to Roman patron-client relationships, and the investigation of OT backgrounds, Jewish apocalyptic, and pneumatological literature.2 All of these methods are viable because they recognize the mindset of the original audience. Introduction – A summary of Hebrews so far … Prior to the Easter week, we’ve been looking at the Book of Hebrews for 6 weeks.. A very brief summary. It was written to Jewish believers, who were wavering in their faith. Because of the taunts & jeers of their persecutors, these Jewish believers in Jesus were beginning to think they had lost everything – the alter/priests/sacrifices – by accepting Christ. They were undervaluing their privileges in Christ and having a pity party. They were in danger of giving up their faith. They had started well but had not made any progress. The writer of Hebrews is trying to lead them from the basics of the faith into a mature grasp of all that their faith means. So he urges them to be loyal to Christ by showing them that He is superior over all they had previously known. The author of Hebrews doesn’t want them drifting back to their ritual ceremonies, so he urges them to let go of everything in order to hold fast to the faith & hope of the Gospel. Now you might be thinking, ‘So what! What has it got to do with me now?’ The Book of Hebrews is a timely warning & a word of comfort to us, especially in this day when many people don’t know much about the deeper things of Christ, and are ready to be led astray by any fad or new age religion that comes along.

It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus our forerunner has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. 7:1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 and Abraham apportioned to him a tenth of everything.     “Hope, the Christian’s Anchor” Hebrews 6:9-20 July 25, 2021 INTRODUCTION: Today’s passage emphasizes something that appears in our church’s vision statement. We are trusting God to make of us “a community of the coming kingdom, bringing hope to a broken world.” Our broken world is in desperate need of hope. Consider the difference hope made in the life of Jacob. He fell in love with Rachel but had no money to marry her. So he negotiated with her father, Laban, to serve him seven years in return for her hand in marriage. We are told that the seven years of hard labor “seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her” (Gen. 29:20). It was hope that made the difference, the confident expectation that there was a happy ending after his labor, the realization that there was meaning in that labor. Without such hope, life is dominated by fear and despair. Our author wants his readers to be filled with hope, and God wants the same for us. I. Hope and Perseverance The verses just before this morning’s passage contain a serious warning against apostasy. It is possible for someone to profess faith in Christ while not actually possessing such faith. It is a real danger, and the author is concerned for his readers, lest they continue drifting toward such apostasy. We learn in verse 9, however, that he doesn’t think his readers have yet fallen off the cliff into apostasy. In their case, he says, he is “sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.” In the next verses, he gets specific about the things that belong to salvation, and he says something similar to James, who taught that faith without works is dead.

    1 Hebrews 6:13-20 Last week Joey talked about salvation, which is a theological term that’s about being saved from the wrath of God - and that’s something we’ll get into a bit later ​ ​ in the sermon. But for today I’d like to start out by revisiting Joey’s main question from last week... Can someone lose their salvation? Well, my family and I listened to Joey’s sermon while we were at the beach, and I completely agreed with him… Can someone lose their salvation? Absolutely not! It’s impossible for a believer to lose their salvation because... Salvation is a gift from God. You cannot lose a gift that God gives you. However, you can reject that gift. ​ ​ [pic of I Kissed Dating Goodbye] I think of Joshua Harris. He’s a former pastor ​ and Christian author who last year publicly admitted that he’s no longer a Christian. You might remember that I talked about him and his faith deconstruction during our 1 Timothy series back in November. Josh no longer believes in the gospel of Jesus. There were years where Josh did believe. And God’s word gives us a certainty that those who believe will inherit the gift of eternal life. Does this mean that because Josh believed at one point in his life that he’s still good to go even though he doesn’t believe now? No! Josh decided to reject the gift of salvation. He didn’t lose the gift - he’s rejecting it - and, I’m not here to pick on Josh… It’s just that he’s a good example because he’s rejecting the gospel publicly, and I know his books had an impact on many of us, including myself.

V15 Abraham wasn’t totally patient (the incident with Hagar), but we can be glad that God understood his partial failure because we sometimes fail.

This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,” II. It is interesting to notice our text this morning. A. The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians to remain faithful to Christ. 1. Many of the Hebrew Christians, where being pushed to turn away from Christ and to come back to their Jewish heritage. 2. The fact that this letter was written indicates that there were several that had already abandoned Christ. 3. So, the writer of Hebrews (and many believe it to be the Apostle Paul), was encouraging those that had fallen away and those that were struggling that there were better things coming for those that stayed in Christ. Hebrews 6:9 “But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 4. There is something awesome to “hope” for in Jesus Christ! Hebrew 6:11 “And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end,” 5. Paul is helping us to understand that our “hope” as Christians is anchored in Heaven and nothing can take that hope and promise from us.

    65 Isaac as Promise: A Study of the Symbolism in Hebrews 11,19 James Swetnam SJ Introduction The Epistle to the Hebrews manifests a particular interest in the promises made by God to Abraham in Genesis. This can be seen from the frequency with which the words "promise" and "I promise" are found in Hebrews.' But there are many more indications, such as the extended imagery of the entry of the people of Israel into the Promised Land in Heb 3,7 - 4,11 , or the rehearsing in Heb 6,13-18 of the oath of God in Gen 22,16-17 with regard to progeny.2 The present study will focus on Heb 11,19 and the implications with regard to "promise" suggested by the context (vv. 17-18): "In faith Abraham has offered Isaac while being tested: he who had received the promises offered up his only son, he to whom it was said that 'By Isaac your seed will be called', having rea-soned that God was able to raise even from the dead; hence he received him [sc., Isaac] back as a symbol".
