The Book of Hebrews Chapter 6 The Book of Hebrews Chapter 6 We will cover some important truths here in Chapter 6… Hebrews 6:1-2 (ESV) Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. Here are some Scriptures that reflect verses 1 & 2 Hebrews 5:12 (KJV) For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. Revelation 3:1 (ESV) “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. “‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Acts 20:21 (ISV) I testified to both Jews and Greeks about repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus. John 3:25 (NIV2011) An argument developed between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew over the matter of ceremonial washing. Acts 6:6 (NASB) And these they brought before the apostles; and after praying, they laid their hands on them. Acts 17:16-34 (NLT2) While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere in the city. 17 He went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews and the God- fearing Gentiles, and he spoke daily in the public square to all who happened to be there. 18 He also had a debate with some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers. When he told them about Jesus and his resurrection, they said, “What’s this babbler trying to say with these strange ideas he’s picked up?” Others said, “He seems to be preaching about some foreign gods.” 19 Then they took him to the high council of the city. “Come and tell us about this new teaching,” they said. 20 “You are saying some rather strange things, and we want to know what it’s all about.” 21 (It should be explained that all the Athenians as well as the foreigners in Athens seemed to spend all their time discussing the latest ideas.) 22 So Paul, standing before the council, addressed them as follows: “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious in every way, 23 for as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about. 24 “He is the God who made the world and everything in it. Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, he doesn’t live in man- made temples, 25 and human hands can’t serve his needs—for he has no needs. He himself gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need. 26 From one man he created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and he determined their boundaries. 27 “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us. 28 For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’ 29 And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone. 30 “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now he commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to him. 31 For he has set a day for judging the world with justice by the man he has appointed, and he proved to everyone who this is by raising him from the dead.” 32 When they heard Paul speak about the resurrection of the dead, some laughed in contempt, but others said, “We want to hear more about this later.” 33 That 34 ended Paul’s discussion with them, but some joined him and became believers. Among 2 Page them were Dionysius, a member of the council, a woman named Damaris, and others with them. Hebrews 6:3 (ESV) And this we will do if God permits. Let’s see how this can take shape… Acts 16:6-10 (ESV) And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them. Hebrews 6:4-8 (ESV) For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away (Gr: parapipto = fall over a precipice), to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. 7 For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God. 8 But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned. Very deep topic here… Eternal Security… The writer is not talking about what we would normally call “falling” or “backsliding”… The Lord shows us how much He loves those who fall and backslid due to the pressures of temptation… 3 Page Hosea 14:1-4 (NKJV) O Israel, return to the LORD your God, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity; 2 Take words with you, And return to the LORD. Say to Him, "Take away all iniquity; Receive us graciously, For we will offer the sacrifices of our lips. 3 Assyria shall not save us, We will not ride on horses, Nor will we say anymore to the work of our hands, 'You are our gods.' For in You the fatherless finds mercy." 4 "I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, For My anger has turned away from him. Hebrews 6:9 Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things— things that belong to salvation. Here is our Hope… Psalm 37:23-24 (NKJV) The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand. Hebrews 6:10-19 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do. 11 And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. 13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” 15 And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. 16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the 4 Page curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. The Anchor! 1 Corinthians 13:13 (KJV) And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. Colossians 1:5 (NLT2) which come from your confident hope of what God has reserved for you in heaven. You have had this expectation ever since you first heard the truth of the Good News. Colossians 1:23-29 (ISV) However, you must remain firmly established and steadfast in the faith, without being moved from the hope of the gospel that you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven and of which I, Paul, have become a servant. 24 Now I am rejoicing in my sufferings for you and completing in my flesh whatever remains of Christ's sufferings on behalf of his body, which is the church.

Introduction – A summary of Hebrews so far … Prior to the Easter week, we’ve been looking at the Book of Hebrews for 6 weeks.. A very brief summary. It was written to Jewish believers, who were wavering in their faith. Because of the taunts & jeers of their persecutors, these Jewish believers in Jesus were beginning to think they had lost everything – the alter/priests/sacrifices – by accepting Christ. They were undervaluing their privileges in Christ and having a pity party. They were in danger of giving up their faith. They had started well but had not made any progress. The writer of Hebrews is trying to lead them from the basics of the faith into a mature grasp of all that their faith means. So he urges them to be loyal to Christ by showing them that He is superior over all they had previously known. The author of Hebrews doesn’t want them drifting back to their ritual ceremonies, so he urges them to let go of everything in order to hold fast to the faith & hope of the Gospel. Now you might be thinking, ‘So what! What has it got to do with me now?’ The Book of Hebrews is a timely warning & a word of comfort to us, especially in this day when many people don’t know much about the deeper things of Christ, and are ready to be led astray by any fad or new age religion that comes along.

He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek. 7:1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High.     “Hope, the Christian’s Anchor” Hebrews 6:9-20 July 25, 2021 INTRODUCTION: Today’s passage emphasizes something that appears in our church’s vision statement. We are trusting God to make of us “a community of the coming kingdom, bringing hope to a broken world.” Our broken world is in desperate need of hope. Consider the difference hope made in the life of Jacob. He fell in love with Rachel but had no money to marry her. So he negotiated with her father, Laban, to serve him seven years in return for her hand in marriage. We are told that the seven years of hard labor “seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her” (Gen. 29:20). It was hope that made the difference, the confident expectation that there was a happy ending after his labor, the realization that there was meaning in that labor. Without such hope, life is dominated by fear and despair. Our author wants his readers to be filled with hope, and God wants the same for us. I. Hope and Perseverance The verses just before this morning’s passage contain a serious warning against apostasy. It is possible for someone to profess faith in Christ while not actually possessing such faith. It is a real danger, and the author is concerned for his readers, lest they continue drifting toward such apostasy. We learn in verse 9, however, that he doesn’t think his readers have yet fallen off the cliff into apostasy. In their case, he says, he is “sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.” In the next verses, he gets specific about the things that belong to salvation, and he says something similar to James, who taught that faith without works is dead.

    1 Hebrews 6:13-20 Last week Joey talked about salvation, which is a theological term that’s about being saved from the wrath of God - and that’s something we’ll get into a bit later ​ ​ in the sermon. But for today I’d like to start out by revisiting Joey’s main question from last week... Can someone lose their salvation? Well, my family and I listened to Joey’s sermon while we were at the beach, and I completely agreed with him… Can someone lose their salvation? Absolutely not! It’s impossible for a believer to lose their salvation because... Salvation is a gift from God. You cannot lose a gift that God gives you. However, you can reject that gift. ​ ​ [pic of I Kissed Dating Goodbye] I think of Joshua Harris. He’s a former pastor ​ and Christian author who last year publicly admitted that he’s no longer a Christian. You might remember that I talked about him and his faith deconstruction during our 1 Timothy series back in November. Josh no longer believes in the gospel of Jesus. There were years where Josh did believe. And God’s word gives us a certainty that those who believe will inherit the gift of eternal life. Does this mean that because Josh believed at one point in his life that he’s still good to go even though he doesn’t believe now? No! Josh decided to reject the gift of salvation. He didn’t lose the gift - he’s rejecting it - and, I’m not here to pick on Josh… It’s just that he’s a good example because he’s rejecting the gospel publicly, and I know his books had an impact on many of us, including myself.

He gave him a son as promised even though he was very old, and it seemed impossible, made his descendants numerous, a great nation, and who are his descendants? Israel, yes, but also Christians, all who believe! Romans 4:11, 17 (note “nations”). SEE Romans 4:1- 25, and note v21. The SO WHAT: What has God promised you? This is only a partial list of God’s promises in the bible: Salvation in Christ (Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38), victory over death (1 Cor. 15:57) and eternal life (John 10:27, 28), all things that happen in the life of a believer work together for good (Rom 8:28), rewards (1 Cor. 3:13-14), peace even in storms (John 14:27), Forgiveness (1 John 1:9), fruit bearing (John 15, Eph. 5:22, 23), His Spirit to live within you, He will supply all our needs (Phil 4), Security, Guidance from God and prayers will be answered (Luke 11:9 – 13), Freedom from sin (Romans 6:14), His grace is sufficient, that we needn’t work to earn his favor (2 Cor. 12:9, Eph. 2:8-10), hope (Heb. 6:19), abundant life (John 10:10), Joy (John 15:11), a new ‘family’ (Matt. 19:29) and Phil 2:12, 13 says God will work in you! V15 Abraham wasn’t totally patient (the incident with Hagar), but we can be glad that God understood his partial failure because we sometimes fail.

Text: Hebrews 6:17-19 “Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil,” II. It is interesting to notice our text this morning. A. The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Christians to remain faithful to Christ. 1. Many of the Hebrew Christians, where being pushed to turn away from Christ and to come back to their Jewish heritage. 2. The fact that this letter was written indicates that there were several that had already abandoned Christ. 3. So, the writer of Hebrews (and many believe it to be the Apostle Paul), was encouraging those that had fallen away and those that were struggling that there were better things coming for those that stayed in Christ. Hebrews 6:9 “But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner. 4. There is something awesome to “hope” for in Jesus Christ! Hebrew 6:11 “And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end,” 5. Paul is helping us to understand that our “hope” as Christians is anchored in Heaven and nothing can take that hope and promise from us.

    65 Isaac as Promise: A Study of the Symbolism in Hebrews 11,19 James Swetnam SJ Introduction The Epistle to the Hebrews manifests a particular interest in the promises made by God to Abraham in Genesis. This can be seen from the frequency with which the words "promise" and "I promise" are found in Hebrews.' But there are many more indications, such as the extended imagery of the entry of the people of Israel into the Promised Land in Heb 3,7 - 4,11 , or the rehearsing in Heb 6,13-18 of the oath of God in Gen 22,16-17 with regard to progeny.2 The present study will focus on Heb 11,19 and the implications with regard to "promise" suggested by the context (vv. 17-18): "In faith Abraham has offered Isaac while being tested: he who had received the promises offered up his only son, he to whom it was said that 'By Isaac your seed will be called', having rea-soned that God was able to raise even from the dead; hence he received him [sc., Isaac] back as a symbol".
