Murmansk - the nothern pearl of Russia Tour description Murmansk (known as Romanov-on-Murman before 1917), was founded in 1916, is the centre of Murmansk region and the largest Russian sea port in the Arctic Ocean. The Arctic nature of the peninsula is unique - thousands of lakes, the polar day in summer and polar night in winter, the bright orange-yellow carpet of plants covering the whole peninsula in autumn, and snow-covered mountains in winter. The Northern lights here are a unique natural phenomena. The Museum of Local History and the Navy Museum are situated in Murmansk. Nuclear-powered icebreaker "Lenin" was the first civil vessel to have a nuclear power plant. This icebreaker transported and disembarked winter expedition on the ice to deploy the drifting polar station "SP-10" in 1961. "Lenin" and the crew started the first prolonged navigation on the Northern Sea Route from Murmansk to Dudinka and back in 1970. Half a year later "Lenin" together with icebreaker "Vladivostok" performed super-early high-latitude voyage along the Northern Sea Route to the port of Pevek. On April 10, 1974 atomic icebreaker "Lenin" was awarded the highest order of the country – the Order of Lenin. Later, nuclear-powered icebreaker "Lenin" became the museum of a civil vessel with a nuclear power plant and was berthed at the seaport of Murmansk on May 05, 2009 and is now open for public. You will visit museum of submarine K-21 and museum of aviation and house of Y. Gagarin, the first man in space. 14:00 Lunch with local specialties. 16:00 Return to Murmansk. OR Visit the village Lovozero and Sami (Laplander) culture museum. You will see life of local people, the way they have been living for many years, the way they cook food and make local crafts. You will have a chance to make a picture of yourself in local dress, sing a song together with Sami people and dance local dances. 20:00 Return to the hotel.
