What would it look like if they not only got along, but they were friends? And what would it look like if they were not only friends, but they had such respect for the others’ traditions that they would stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers of different faiths in an uncertain world at an uncertain time? I know it may be hard to see sometimes, but this type of religious harmony exists. There are people around the world committed to multifaith dialogue, that is, bringing people together across lines of different, to learn about the other, and so increase understanding and respect. This is the field I have worked in for several years, and I am very excited to work at Har Zion to help build up more interfaith programming at the shul – for multifaith families in the community, for those who want to learn about other traditions, for anyone who wants to meet people of other faiths, and more. There is already incredible work going on in the Philadelphia area, and we are excited to bring Har Zion into that fold. For those of you whom I have not yet met, my name is Allyson Zacharoff. I am a rabbinical student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College in Wyncote, and I have been working in this field since 2012. November/December 2019  3 CELEBRATING HANUKKAH . . . The Miracle of Hanukkah The origin of Hanukkah is the celebration of the recapture and rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem by Judah Maccabee and his followers after their revolt against the Syrian-Greeks. The military victory leading to this rededication (or hanukkah) was considered a miracle. One piece of the rededication of the Temple that became central to our understanding of Hanukkah is the lighting of the menorah. Later sources – less fond of the military miracle and the people behind it – identify a miracle of oil lasting for eight days, long enough to produce a new supply. The story of the oil may have arisen because the were not fond of celebrating a military victory or of celebrating the victors! While the Maccabees fought a war of liberation against foreign oppression, they also fought a war against who had assimilated into the culture of the Greeks. These Hellenized Jews were also a part of the religious establishment, and the Maccabees were virulently purist in their orientation. While we may appreciate their efforts in the war against their Greek overlords, many of us are more ambivalent about how they treated other Jews, especially since most of us are assimilated into the dominant American culture now. In the last century or so, the Maccabees' reputation has been rehabilitated, becoming the paradigm of the physically strong and successful Jews, so we have named athletic teams and competitions after them. When we light our candles each evening, we acknowledge the miracles that God performed in those days and also in our time. Therefore, we are instructed to light our candles where others can see them: to publicize the miracle. We are spreading the light – literally and figuratively. As we reach the darkest time of the year, we recognize that we have the opportunity, and perhaps obligation, to spread light throughout our communities and our world. !    Happy Festival of Lights!

How to Light Hanukkah Candles Sunday, December 22 to Sunday, December 29 (Light Hanukkah candles before Shabbat candles) Light the shammash candle first. Use it to light the other candles. On the first evening of Hanukkah, Sunday, December 22,place one candle on the far right as you face the hanukkiyah (the Hanukkah candelabrum). On the second night and on each succeeding night place the candle for that evening to the left of the candle which preceded it. Light the newest candle first and then continue lighting the candles from left to right. On Friday evening, December 27, the Hanukkah candles are kindled before the Shabbat candles, and on Saturday night, December 28, the Hanukkah candles are kindled after Havdalah, which marks the conclusion of Shabbat.

Before lighting the candles, the following berakhah (blessing) is recited:    .   .        Barukh attah adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel hanukkah. We will also enjoy artistic and musical presentations from our children and a delicious lunch. Thank you in advance for your official welcome, for your partnership, and for being a part of this significant day in the life of Har Zion. Thank you also to the volunteers and Har Zion staff whose dedication will make this installation a unique and memorable celebration for all of us.

Allyson Zacharoff(continued from page 1) learned the value of religious diversity from a young age. Once I knew there were people working on dialogue professionally, I was hooked. After college, I received a fellowship to study in Rome at a Catholic university, where I studied with priests and nuns. I later spent time in Jerusalem studying in yeshiva and working on interfaith projects in that area, before returning to the United States to study the Qur’an at an interfaith graduate school. I have also been fortunate to attend different conferences internationally, meeting people of all ages who are committed to shifting the narrative from one of hate and distrust, to one of understanding and respect. There is a role we all can play in this work. We as Jews are called to repair the world, and this is not a burden we can take lightly. In a world so broken, we are called by our tradition to do our share in repairing that brokenness in whatever ways we can – and taking that step forward to build relationships across lines of difference is one critical area in which to do it. Whether you have never spoken in depth with someone of a different faith, or you have been married to someone of a different faith for fifty years, you are most welcome to participate in the multifaith initiatives we are building at and around Har Zion. Please feel free to reach out to me at any time at [email protected], and I look forward to meeting many of you soon! November/December 2019  5 ADULT JEWISH LEARNING . . .

We have formed a new closed Facebook group to discuss the new Multifaith Engagement program, and welcome your comments. Please email Norman Einhorn, [email protected], for an invitation to join this closed group. For over two thousand years, Jewish communities have existed in Italy. Our ancestors settled here during the pre- Christian Roman era and, through periods of prosperity and times of persecution, have held a continuous presence until today. We’ll explore these roots and routes – historic, religious and, of course, musical! Join us as we sing, study, sightsee and celebrate together in inviting, intriguing Italy.

On our adventure together we will... Delight in Jewish Music with an operatic Italian flare, featuring the soaring voices of the Cantors Assembly. • Explore Italian history through a Jewish prism, with scholarly presentations by noted scholar Prof. Stephen Berk throughout. • Enjoy a gondola ride through Venice, visit Rome’s old Jewish Ghetto in the Trastevere area, tour the gorgeous Duomo of Florence...and so much more! Full itinerary, pricing and registration at: secure.ayelet.com/CA2020Italy.aspx Please choose the Deluxe category when registering to join this group.
