Gray, bLack cottonwood) genome sequence is enabling new research approaches in angiosperm tree biology. Much of the recent genomics research in popLars has been on wood formation, growth and deveLopment, and abiotic stress tolerance, motivated, at Least in part, by the fact that popLars provide an important system for Large scale, short-rotation pLantation forestry in the Northern Hemisphere. Given their widespread distribution and long lifespan, poplar trees are threatened by a Large variety of insect herbivore pests, and must deal with their attacks with a successfuL defense response. To sustain productivity and ecosystem health of natural and planted poplar forests, it is of critical importance to develop a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of defense and resistance of poplars against insect pests. Previous research has established a soLid foundation of the chemical ecology of poplar defense against base with Large-scaLe profiling of transcriptome responses of insects. In this study, I buiLd on this popLar trees to insect herbivory. Miller Synonyms: Hypoxylon pruinatum (Klotzsch) Cooke Taxonomic position: Fungi: Ascomycetes: Xylariales Common names: Hypoxylon canker (English) Chancre du tremble (French) Rindenbrand (German) Notes on taxonomy and nomenclature: At one time, H. pruinatum, the name mostly then used for the harmful pathogen in North America, was considered to be a species distinct from H. mammatum. They are now accepted to be synonyms, and the name H. mammatum has priority (Miller, 1961). Bayer computer code: HYPOMA EPPO A2 list: No. 72 (deleted in 1984) EU Annex designation: II/B HOSTS The principal hosts are, in Europe, the native species Populus tremula (especially its mountain race) and, in North America, P. tremuloides, which has also been introduced into Europe, as such and in hybrid form. P. grandidentata is less affected. Species of section Leuce of the genus Populus are essentially those affected (Pinon, 1986). The fungus has also been reported on a few other woody genera, but this probably reflects the broader concept of the species by which it includes both saprobic and pathogenic forms (Manion & Griffin, 1986). Inoculation tests on clones of Populus deltoides, P. canadensis and P. trichocarpa widely cultivated in Europe have shown them to be resistant. Thus, the main species at risk in Europe is the commercially exploited P. tremuloides (P. tremula mainly grows as a wild species, especially in mountain areas). GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION Though at one time it was thought that H. mammatum was introduced into Europe from North America, it is now considered more probable that it occurs naturally throughout the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere (Bier, 1940; Pinon, 1979).

Species can be identified using taxonomic keys at national and regional level, and DNA barcoding. Two online world catalogues exist for the genus. The genus includes about one hundred species and many subspecies colonising conifers and non-conifer trees in many areas in the world. The non-EU species are listed in Annex IAI of Council Directive 2000/29/EC. Although Monochamus spp. colonise weakened or dead trees and have therefore no direct impact, some species vector the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, which they inoculate to healthy trees when they proceed to maturation feeding on twigs, causing high mortality among pines in Asia and the EU (Portugal). Sixteen species in Asia and America attack conifers. The main pathways for entry are raw untreated wood and wood products, wood packaging material, particle wood and waste wood, finished wood products and hitchhiking. Monochamus species were categorised in two groups. The first group includes 16 species colonising conifers and absent in the EU known or likely to vector the pine wood nematode.

(Such eyes!) I gave her my camera and she snapped several images.

Grimble, Fred B. Knight and John C. Nordl The poplar gall Saperda, Saperda inornata Say, is a common pest of trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx, in Michigan forests. Through its egg-laying activities and larval feeding, this insect causes wood defects and tree mortality (Graham et al., 1963). While studying natural populations of this insect (Grimble and Knight, 1970), we collected many galls and found through rearing and dissection that they harbor a large and varied insect fauna.

The confusion has arisen from three reasons: (1) LeConte failed to distinguish S. concolor Lec. (1852) from S. irornata Say (1824); (2) Say's type material was destroyed or lost which makes verification impossible; and (3) S. inornata varies from light to dark in overall appearance. The former two points are discussed here and the latter will be covered in a separate article.
