Parish Viral Voice Keeping positive together Newsletter Edition 8: 28th June 2020 [Final Edition]

Hello everyone, welcome to the final edition of the Viral Voice. As you know, it was intended to provide a little extra entertainment and information during lockdown. I decided to keep it going a little longer but now seems to be an appropriate time to publish the final edition. I hope we will not be in the position of a second peak and another lockdown, but in the event that we are, I will consider reviving it for a short while.

I hope you are keeping well? A dull, wet and windy day today but we have been blessed with some lovely weather of late. I’m sure the intermittent rain is saving everyone time watering their gardens and it is certainly helping the grass grow in the fields! As restrictions continue to ease, we hope that people will behave sensibly and in a manner that keeps the virus at bay. We keep our fingers crossed for a vaccine soon so that we can get back to normal.

I’ve had a couple of things to include in this edition, one in particular is information regarding local Covid 19 testing. Also the answers to any quizzes are on the back page, so don’t scroll down too far to begin with!

Stay safe while you are out and about, Best Wishes, Toni xxx

Please Support Our Church St Paternus Church During this difficult time, with our church buildings throughout the country being closed for several weeks, we are still a church; meeting North Petherwin virtually for prayer services and fellowship, loving our neighbours by offering practical support to the vulnerable, and caring for our communities.A major source of our Parish Church income has been cut off by the closure of our church building, with offerings during services and voluntary donations at other times within the church building having ceased for several weeks, thereby making it difficult to play our part in fulfilling these needs. With the help of the Church of `A Church Near You` team we have been able to set up a means of donating online to our church. This is straightforward and secure and donations can be made by visiting the St Paternus listing on the following website: Do you have a prayer www.achurchnearyou.com C for someone in need? Simply follow the search links to The Church of St Paternus, North Petherwin and click on the arrow in the purple inset on the landing Visit www.achurchnearyou.com page, headed Please Support Our Church. Donations large or small are and follow the links to welcome.Thank you and God be with you. St Paternus Church and thence to our Prayer List

Lets go ’On Safari ‘ in Cornwall! - Wed 10th June 2020 NPSC Virtual Visit Report

We started our trek at - The Settlement,- by the Lake - on the Headland – or better known as: Tre Pol Pen - for a spot of lunch, and then made the short hike back to THE CORNWALL NATURE CONSERVANCY (CNC) at Tredivett Mill - which has evolved over the last thirty years, with charitable status granted on 4th August 2015.

The CNC care for Rare and Endangered British and Worldwide animals, breeding them and being part of breeding programmes that are worthwhile and meaningful. Whilst working alongside local education to encourage younger people to understand the necessity for conservation. They keep, and breed, and on many occasions release such British animals as:

Scottish Wild Cat, European Otters, Water Voles, Harvest Mice, Pine Martins, Polecats and Barn Owls,

and recently just started a breeding programme for Hedgehogs, using rescued, permanently injured creatures that cannot be released.

The Conservancy is set in a 10 acre Nature Reserve , where they have planted thousands of trees and flowers, dug many ponds, planted an Orchard and put up hundreds of Bird, animal and insect boxes. The intention is to leave Tredivett Mill and the Nature reserve to the Conservancy.

Animals from further afield: Being committed to the breeding of Worldwide Cats, most of the which have suffered from excesses of hunting and the fur trade –“CAT COATS LOOK BEST ON Cats”. They keep Mountain Lions, Lynx, Ocelot, Malaysian Fishing Cats, Servals, Jaguarundi and Leoapard Cats.

They have bred almost all of these successfully except for the Ocelot - the hunt is on for a suitable partner for their Male. Currently they have two female Lynx, but the male is still too young to breed. But should be ready in 12 months.

Other animals, such a Tortoise, rescued by Customs and Excise after illegal entry to UK. Another animal rescued by the Courts from a pet shop are Tenrecs – (they were being sold as pet Hedgehogs!). These are very interesting animals from Madagascar which are subject to ’slash and burn’ policies and the subsequent loss of habitat. They rescued two pairs, which have now both bred.

They also have a small collection, having bred many over the last few years, of one of the most beautiful birds in the world – The Rothschilds Mynah bird, but again, because of the pet trade and habitat destruction (destruction of forest for palm plantation) have become extinct in the last few decades. www.cornwallnatureconservancy.org.uk

Thank you to Jill Prouse for initially arranging this trip – when she spoke to them recently they told her that they hoped to open as soon as they are allowed to, and is safe to do so, as before lockdown, Tesco supplied them with much of their ‘out of date’ fruit and veg, but unfortunately since lockdown, this has stopped due to the it having to be returned to head office!
