The center is represented by a mained lion (kesara sinha) which is the legendary ancestor of the Sinhalese. viii Foreword: An Anthropology of Sharing Jacques Maquet Professor of Anthropology University of California, Los Angeles n the last twenty years or so anthropologists have become increas- Iingly concerned with understanding the culture they study from the point of view of those who live, feel, and think within that cul- ture. Anthropologists want to perceive the culture as the insiders perceive it. And, later, when they present the results of their research they hope that insiders will recognize their own views and feelings and that outsiders also will gain an understanding of the intellec- tual and affective processes that occur in the insiders’ minds. In his research—and in this book which reflects it—Dr. David Blundell has gone a step further than other sociocultural anthropol- ogists in the quest for understanding and rendering the Sinhalese belief system. His innovative approach is based on sharing the inves- tigative process with those who are usually considered to be objects of the research. The three parts of the Sinhalese belief system—Theravada Bud- dhism, cult of deities, and exorcism—are concretely approached through the life histories of three men. Each plays

At the same time, forestry and agricultural lands still remain, mainly in the eastern and south-eastern parts of the province. And also, there are some local urban centres which are less dependent on Colombo. These areas have less relation with the centre of Colombo. The Colombo Metropolitan Area is defined in order to analyse and assess future transport demands and formulate a master plan. For this purpose, Colombo Metropolitan Area is defined by: A) areas that are already urbanised and those to be urbanised by 2035, and B) areas that are dependent on Colombo. In an urbanised area, urban activities, which are mainly commercial and business activities, are active and it is assumed that demand for transport is high. People living in areas dependent on Colombo area assumed to travel to Colombo by some transport measures. 4.1.2 Factors to Consider for Future Urban Structures In order to identify the CMA, the following factors are considered. These factors will also define the urban structure, which is described in Section 4.3. An effective transport network will be proposed based on the urban structure as well as the traffic demand. At the same time, the new transport network proposed will affect the urban structure and lead to urban development.

    Buddhist-Christian Encounter and Dialogue: a critical, contextual approach. Elizabeth J. Harris Birmingham University I begin this presentation by stressing that it is impossible to isolate one model or one pattern of Buddhist-Christian encounter. Each encounter in the past and the present has been or is being conditioned by different factors such as geographical location, colonial history, power relations, politics and the school of Buddhism or Christianity involved. I would like to take two illustrative examples of this: Buddhist-Christian encounter in nineteenth century colonial Sri Lanka, a context that has formed an important part of my academic research; the latter part of the twentieth century. I will end with a significant current development. Buddhist-Christian Encounter in Sri Lanka in Nineteenth Century Colonial Sri Lanka Buddhist-Christian encounter in nineteenth century colonial Sri Lanka was conditioned by the imperial policies of the British, which held power in Sri Lanka from 1796 to 1948, and the presence of evangelical Protestant Christian missionaries, from independent missionary societies, who sought to proselytise through undermining Buddhism. Before 1796, Sri Lanka had experienced the Portuguese and the Dutch. Research into the Dutch period reveal that, although Buddhists developed a critique of the Christianity of their conquerors, expressed in folk tales that represented Christians as uncivilized beef-eaters and Jesus as the son of a demon (Young & Senanayaka 1998), they did not experience contempt for Buddhism. Christian baptism was necessary for government employment under the Dutch. Dutch schools taught Christian catechisms. But the Dutch did not insist on Sri Lankan Buddhists rejecting Buddhist practice when they were baptised.

    Kelani Right Bank Water Treatment Plant Sri Lanka 1. Background Information about the Water Treatment Plant Kelani Right Bank (Biyagama) water treatment plant (BWTP) commenced its construction on 22 October, 2008. BWTP was planned with the intention of providing safe drinking water to towns in the Northern part of the Western Province in Sri Lanka, namely Biyagama, Kelaniya, Kiribathgoda, Kadawatha, Ragama, Wattala, Kandana, Ja-Ela, Seeduwa and Ganemulla. The initial capacity of BWTP is 180,000 m3/d (phase 1) and the full design capacity (phase 2) is 360,000 m3/d. Water is extracted from Kelani River. Almost 95% of raw water is converted into clean water. The maximum water loss is about 5 % of the total amount of water intake. This loss is due to raw water transmission, sludge dewatering and backwash. Figure 1 shows the view of BWTP. Figure 1 Biyagama Water Treatment Plant After completion of all construction works, the BWTP was officially commissioned on 23 July, 2013. Approximately 1 million population is benefitted by this water treatment plant. BWTP is the first water treatment plant in Sri Lanka that was awarded ISO 9001:2008 quality management certification for the water treatment process. Ginsberg was smiling and bopping gently to some invisible music. Jack Kerouac was wearing his red James Dean windbreaker, smoking a cigarette and looking like a young movie star. We all went off to a cheap restaurant in North Beach to eat dinner and talk. Although Kerouac had already published his first novel and had a contract for 0 11 The Road he was worrying a great deal about how to publish the rest.
