Samples were collected by electrofishing and in a visual dive census. Two distinct species of the genus Telestes were found in the area of investigation; T. polylepis and T. karsticus, each on the opposite side of the Velika and Mala Kapela mountains. Accordingly, the knowledge of the distribution, morphometric and meristic characteristics for both species has been significantly improved. Also, the knowledge of the population structure, length-weight relationships, diet, age and growth, reproduction and mortality of T. karsticus has greatly improved. This species is a euryphagous omnivore. Benthic invertebrates accounted for the majority of the food consumed, although terrestrial insects, plant material, algae and fish were also found. The species sexually matures at the age of 1+. It is a litophylic species that spawns from mid- March to mid-May. The oldest specimen found was at the age of 5+. In Croatian watercourses, three members of the genus Barbus are found, B. balcanicus, B. barbus and B. plebejus, each occupying a specific ecological niche. This study examined cytochrome b (cyt b), a common genetic marker used to describe the structure and origin of fish populations to perform a phylogenetic reconstruction of the Danube barbel. Two methods of phylogenetic inference were used: maximum parsimony (MP) and maximum likelihood (ML), which yielded well supported trees of similar topology. The Median joining network (MJ) was generated and corroborated to show the divergence of three lineages of Barbus balcanicus on the Balkan Peninsula: Croatian, Serbian and Macedonian lineages that separated at the beginning of the Pleistocene.

  • Distribution of the Species Telestes Souffia (Risso, 1827) (Pisces: Cyprinidae) in the Upper Tisa River and Its Tributaries (Maramure County - North Romania)
Muzeul Olteniei Craiova. Oltenia. Studii i comunicri. tiinele Naturii, Tom. XXV/2009 ISSN 1454-6914 DISTRIBUTION OF THE SPECIES TELESTES SOUFFIA (RISSO, 1827) (PISCES: CYPRINIDAE) IN THE UPPER TISA RIVER AND ITS TRIBUTARIES (MARAMURE COUNTY - NORTH ROMANIA) ILIE C. TELCEAN, DIANA CUPA Abstract. The species Telestes souffia (RISSO, 1827) is represented by three subspecies across the European rivers (T. souffia souffia from the Rhone and the Var rivers; T. souffia muticellus in north-Italy and Switzerland; Telestes souffia agassizi VALENCIENNES 1844 from the Danube river and the uppermost Rhine drainage). In the Romanian rivers this species was one of the roughly recent recorded cyprinid fishes. Based on a few morphological features, the Romanian populations of this species were assimilated with those from the Upper Danube and the Rhine, respectively the subspecies Telestes souffia agassizi. However, a morphological study and the diagnosis on these populations are necessary. The range of T. souffia agassizi in the Romanian rivers was initially noted as covering only the northern rivers, respectively the upper Tisa and the river mouth of its main tributaries the Spâna, the Iza and the Vieu. After the first record of this species in 1959, during three decades there are no new investigations on the species range in the Maramure rivers. The recent studies (1995-2008) focused on the fishfauna from the upper Tisa and its tributaries the Vieu, the Iza, the Mara and the Spâna reveals the actual range of T. souffia agassizi on these rivers. The new data prove also that the species distribution is wide than it was noted before.

Lorenzoni(1) Received January 29, 2013 Revised April 11, 2013 Accepted April 11, 2013 ABSTRACT Key-words: Squalius lucumonis (Bianco, 1983) is an endemic species restricted to endemic three river basins in central Italy and listed as endangered according to species, IUCN Red List. The aim of this research was to increase the information Squalius on ecological preferences of this species and to focus on its differences lucumonis, with S. squalus (Bonaparte, 1837). Data collected in 86 different water- Squalius courses throughout Tiber River basin were analysed in the research. For squalus, each of the 368 river sectors examined, the main environmental parame- longitudinal ters and the fish community were considered. The information were anal- gradient, ysed by means of the Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) while the fish assemblage differences in ecological traits between S. lucumonis and S. squalus were compared by ANOVA. The results of the study showed significant differ- ences in the ecological preferences of the two species: the S. lucumonis showed predilection for smaller watercourses characterised by a lower number of species and a higher degree of integrity of fish community than S. squalus This information allowed to increase the basic knowledge on population biology and ecology of S.

  • The Phylogenetic Relationships and Species Richness of Host-Specific Dactylogyrus Parasites Shaped by the Biogeography of Balkan
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The phylogenetic relationships and species richness of host-specifc Dactylogyrus parasites shaped Received: 23 February 2018 Accepted: 17 August 2018 by the biogeography of Balkan Published: xx xx xxxx cyprinids Michal Benovics1, Yves Desdevises2, Jasna Vukić3, Radek Šanda4 & Andrea Šimková1 Parasites exhibiting a high degree of host specifcity are expected to be intimately associated with their hosts. Therefore, the evolution of host-specifc parasites is at least partially shaped by the evolutionary history and distribution of such hosts. Gill ectoparasites of Dactylogyrus (Monogenea) are specifc to cyprinid fsh. In the present study, we investigated the evolutionary history of 47 Dactylogyrus species from the Balkan Peninsula, the Mediteranean region exhibiting the highest cyprinid diversity in Europe, and from central European cyprinids. Phylogenetic analyses revealed four well-supported clades of endemic and non-endemic Dactylogyrus spp. with four basal taxa. Endemic cyprinids with a limited distribution range were parasitized by endemic Dactylogyrus species, but some of them shared several Dactylogyrus species with central European cyprinids. Species delimitation analyses based on molecular data suggest that Dactylogyrus diversity is higher than that defned from morphology. Some endemic cyprinid species harboured Dactylogyrus species of diferent origins, this probably resulting from multiple host switching. Our results support the view that the evolution of Dactylogyrus in the Balkans has been infuenced not only by the historical dispersion and distribution of their cyprinid hosts, but also by recent contacts of non-native cyprinid species with endemic cyprinid fauna in this region. Te species richness of parasitic taxa and their distribution in host species is usually closely related to the history, dispersion and diversity of their hosts1–3.

Data collected in 2010 from three different sampling sites (one above and two downstream from the dam) were compared with those recorded during previous studies (conducted in 1992) to reveal the change in fish community. In each sampling site, a census of the fish community was conducted, the estimated number of fish of each species was calculated and fish condition was assessed by relative weight. The structure of the communities downstream from Montedoglio Reservoir changed radically after the construction of the barrier, while the fish community upstream from the barrier appeared unaffected by the dam. The release of hypolimnetic cold water from the reservoir, over time, has caused a progressive decreasing of water temperature of the Tiber River. Montedoglio Reservoir and the release of hypolimnetic water had a marked impact on the fish community of the Tiber River because it interrupted the typical lon- gitudinal zonation of the species in the river.
