This is an annual report by my University on not just the outstandingly high quality of our undergraduate enrolments, but on the opportunities that are made available to these students once they have been successfully admitted to HKU. While we strive to ensure that our teaching and learning is of the highest quality, a full educational experience requires significant investment of staff time and financial resources in many learning activities beyond the campus. This Global Admissions Profile covers a selection of these, to give a flavour of how international our graduates are once they leave HKU. A typical undergraduate from HKU these days might well have completed an exchange semester at a leading university in the U.S. or U.K., an internship in the Mainland, a summer working on a service learning project for a rural African community, and several study tours, summer schools or field trips abroad. It is these experiences, and the independence, maturity, planning skills, language competencies, teamwork skills and sensitivity to other peoples and cultures that emerge from those experiences, that make HKU alumni stand PROFESSOR XiaNG ZhaNG apart from many others. To employ a rather overused phrase, President and Vice-Chancellor they graduate from HKU as “Global Citizens”, that is, individuals who have the skills to go with their undoubted talents, to face the changes and uncertainties of the 21st century. This year’s Global Admissions Profile, as the cover shows, coincides with a Times Higher Education ranking placing HKU as the Most International University in the world. In HKU, however, we are not swayed too much by rankings, as we measure ourselves more by what we are doing to push our University further ahead of the traditional assessments of performance that are measured by rankings. Indeed, the most impressive aspect of HKU’s internationalization is not the number of overseas or Mainland students on the HKU campus, nor the number of professors who are from outside Hong Kong, both typical measures of internationalization. It is the number of educational opportunities available to students, local and non-local, outside Hong Kong. This now exceeds 10,000 in any one year, which, when put alongside the number of undergraduates that are admitted to HKU each year (around 4,000), goes a long way to explaining why our graduates are so internationally-minded, and so much in demand from the community here, as well as beyond Hong Kong. Whether you are a friend of HKU, an alumnus, or a potential applicant to HKU, I invite you to spend some time browsing through this Global Admissions Profile, to get a clearer idea of why HKU is regarded and respected so highly by our partners. • The Problem Posed by Exam Choice on the Comparability of Results in the Finnish Matriculation Examination
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Helsingin yliopiston digitaalinen arkisto Journal for Educational Research Online Journal für Bildungsforschung Online Volume 8 (2016), No. 2, 87–106 © 2016 Waxmann Sirkku Kupiainen, Jukka Marjanen & Jarkko Hautamäki The problem posed by exam choice on the comparability of results in the Finnish matriculation examination Abstract The article by Kupiainen, Marjanen and Hautamäki focuses on the upper second- ary matriculation examination in Finland as a school leaving and university en- trance examination. The presented research addresses the question of whether increased choice of the subject-specifi c examinations has the potential to under- mine the comparability of examination results and to direct students’ choices not only in the examination but already beforehand at school. The authors re- fer to Finland’s tradition of more than 160 years of a national examination con- necting the academic track of upper secondary schools with universities. The au- thors explain the Finnish system by describing the adoption of a course-based (vs. class- or year-based) curriculum for the three-year upper secondary education and the subsequent reforms in the matriculation examination. This increases stu- dents’ choices considerably with regard to the subject-specifi c exams included in the examination (a minimum of four). As a result, high-achieving students com- pete against each other in the more demanding subjects while the less able share the same normal distribution of grades in the less demanding subjects. As a con- sequence, students tend to strategic exam-planning, which in turn aff ects their study choices at school, often to the detriment of the more demanding subjects and, subsequently, of students’ career opportunities, endangering the tradition- al national objective of an all-round pre-academic upper secondary education.
