  • Not Just Another Crapshoot Development: the Challenges and Opportunities of Modelling After Las Vegas and Macao As an Econo

In the race to build casino-cities, particularly to reap economic and social Tat Chee Ave, Kowloon, Hong benefits, most aspirers look to replicate the development models of the most famous Kong casino-cities known to date, Las Vegas and Macao. Countries that have modelled after the aforementioned casino-cities have had mix results of success; e.g., Singapore, which followed Macao, yielded considerable success, while other states of the US which modelled Las Vegas, such as Atlantic City, did not have as much luck. In this respect, the countries adhere to the words of the wise; “Standing on the shoulders of the giants”. Yet, perhaps explaining why no country can really replicate the successful development experiences of Las Vegas and Macao, most countries fail to see beyond the glitz and glamor to recognize the key challenges and opportunities that helped make Las Vegas and Macao; e.g., with respect to the presence of domestic organized crime groups. This paper delves deep into identifying the key actors and circumstances that made the aforementioned cities what they are today, elucidating the integral development strategies used during their formative years.

PR Document 2020 Japanese Super Formula Championship Series Media Information August 27 2020 1 Super Formula : Then and Now In the 1950s, the Fédération Internationale de I’Automobile (FIA) launched the Drivers’ Championship to find the world’s fastest formula car drivers the purest form of racing machine. That ethos was passed on to all FIA national member organizations.Top-level formula motor racing has been held in Japan in various forms since 1973, when Formula 2000 was first launched. The competition evolved into Formula Two in 1978 and then Formula 3000 in 1987. Japan Race Promotion, Inc. (JRP) was established in 1995 and continued carrying the competition torch in 1996 under the name of Formula Nippon. In 2013, the name of the competition was changed again to Japanese Championship Super Formula and a bold plan was implemented to upgrade the race cars and lift the profile of the competition with the clear aim of spreading the appeal of Super Formula from Japan to other parts of Asia. Another hope was to turn the series into a third great open-wheel racing competition to go along with Formula One and IndyCar. The competition’s name was changed again in 2016 to Japanese Super Formula Championship. In 2017, BS Fuji began broadcasting live Super Formula races, giving many motorsport fans the chance to watch championship races on free-to-air television. In the early days, formula racing in Japan was led by top drivers such as Kunimitsu Takahashi, Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Satoru Nakajima, who later competed on the global stage in Formula One.

Patrick Long’s & Sebastien Bourdais’ Comments About the 8th Annual Kart 4 Kids Pro-Am Kart Race It’s only fitting that this year’s 8th annual Kart 4 Kids charity karting event takes place just a few steps from the entrance of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St Pete. It’s also just a stone’s throw from Dan Wheldon Way. Each year the event grows, the funds raised increase, and the awareness around a special hospital and a group of kids accelerate. Thank you to our hosts, all of the sponsors, partners, donors, pro drivers, and especially the large committee of great volunteers who make the production of this event happen. This event started off as a humble gathering, with the goal of raising a few dollars in the name of Dan Wheldon for the Hospital. Dan was a St. Pete resident, and someone who had a lot of time for All Children’s. We continue to race in his memory and smile as status and organization of this gathering continues to reach new boundaries! A few milestones were reached in 2018 for Kart for Kids. We managed to donate 130k$ to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, bring the event downtown and reinforce the involvement of the community and sponsors thanks to our amazing group of volunteers. The response from the racing community was no less impressive, with many drivers from different series donating their apparel and time. 2019 will be no less impressive and I want to thank each and every individual for their continued support.

Motorsport Information Formula 3 Grand Prix, Macau The biggest Formula 3 race of the year – Volkswagen represented by ten talented youngsters at Macau Grand Prix ° Eight wins so far – Volkswagen looking to continue successful tradition in Macau ° Giovinazzi, Leclerc and Co. line up with Carlin, Van Amersfoort, Motopark and Signature Wolfsburg (20 November 2015). It is regarded as the unofficial Formula 3 World Championship: the Macau Grand Prix. Volkswagen can justifiably fancy its changes ahead of the most important and prestigious race in the number one series for young, single-seater drivers. The Wolfsburg-based company has a good hand in the gambling paradise of Macau: ten promising, talented young drivers, including the runner-up and fourth-placed drivers in this year’s Formula 3 European Championship, Antonio Giovinazzi (I) and Charles Leclerc (MC), will be “powered by Volkswagen”. Their cars will be run by four renowned racing teams: Carlin Motorsport, Van Amersfoort Racing, Signature and Motopark. Together, they are out to continue Volkswagen’s proud tradition at the 6.2-kilometre street circuit: Volkswagen currently has eight victories to its name as an engine supplier. “The Grand Prix in Macau is not only the unofficial Formula 3 World Championship, but also the final highlight of the season,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. “The drivers naturally want to win here and follow in the footsteps of some true motorsport greats. The teams will also be working flat-out to head into the winter break with that positive feeling you get from a win. Macau is widely regarded as a gaming paradise – and you need to take the odd gamble out on the track here too: How shall I set my car up for qualifying and the race? Who will give me the all-important slipstream on the straights? And when is the right tactical moment to attack the car in front? In any case, it will be a real thrill for the drivers – and great entertainment for the spectators .” In the footsteps of Brabham, Schumacher and Co.

  • Macau's Urban Image Production
The 4 th International Conference of the International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU) 2009 Amsterdam/Delft The New Urban Question – Urbanism beyond Neo-Liberalism MACAU’S URBAN IMAGE PRODUCTION BEFORE AND AFTER THE CREDIT CRUNCH Hendrik Tieben* *School of Architecture, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Wong Foo Yuan Building, Hong Kong, China, Email:[email protected] ABSTRACT: Macau is one example of a rapidly transforming city in Asia. In competition with other cities in the region, it capitalizes on its role as the only place in China where casino gambling is legalised. Since the handover of the former Portuguese enclave to the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Macau has experienced various deregulations ranging from the end of its gambling monopoly, and the liberalisation of planning regulations, to the easing of travel restrictions. These liberalisation s were followed by an inflow of foreign direct investments (FDI) and visitors, and eventually led to a significant change of Macau’s urban landscape. Macau’s urban image construction can be discussed in the context of neo-liberalism under consideration of its specific characteristics as a free port, offshore haven and “free market” which however is manipulated by casino corporations, a small local elite, and the Chinese government in Beijing. The paper investigates how changes of Macau’s urban image are related to these characteristics and if the urban development after the credit crunch can have a more sustainable direction. KEYWORDS: Neo-liberalism, urban image, urban transformation, offshore-urbanism, Macau, China.
