This insect has been detected in greenhouses in Ohio but was subsequently eradicated (Passoa 2008). It is listed as an exotic organism of high invasive risk to the United States (USDA-APHIS 2008). In addition, it is currently widely accepted that plant- to-plant communication allows specifc neighbors to be warned of likely incoming stress (defense priming). Systemin is a plant peptide hormone promoting the systemic response to herbivory in tomato. This 18-aa peptide is also able to induce the release of bioactive Volatile Organic Compounds, thus also promoting the interaction between the tomato and the third trophic level (e.g. predators and parasitoids of insect pests). In this work, using a combination of gene expression (RNA-Seq and qRT-PCR), behavioral and chemical approaches, we demonstrate that systemin triggers metabolic changes of the plant that are capable of inducing a primed state in neighboring unchallenged plants. At the molecular level, the primed state is mainly associated with an elevated transcription of pattern -recognition receptors, signaling enzymes and transcription factors. Compared to naïve plants, systemin-primed plants were signifcantly more resistant to herbivorous pests, more attractive to parasitoids and showed an increased response to wounding. Small peptides are nowadays considered fundamental signaling molecules in many plant processes and this work extends the range of downstream efects of this class of molecules to intraspecifc plant-to-plant communication. -

It has not established in the U.S. (yet), but it is believed that it would cause a large economic impact. At the very least, pest establishment could result in increased insecticide use. It is also known as cluster caterpillar, common cutworm, cotton leafworm, tobacco cutworm, tobacco caterpillar, oriental leafworm moth, rice cutworm, and tropical armyworm. Helmy4,5, Jian Wen4 & Tsubasa Nozaki6,7 The agricultural use of silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) has the potential to control insect pests while the safety and tritrophic efects on plants and benefcial natural enemies remains unknown. Here, we evaluate the efects of silica NPs on insect pests with diferent feeding niches, natural enemies, and a plant. Silica NPs were applied at diferent concentrations (75–425 mg/L) on feld‑cultivated faba bean and soybean for two growing seasons. The faba bean pests, the cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora and the American serpentine leafminer Liriomyza trifolii, and the soybean pest, the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis, were monitored along with their associated predators. Additional laboratory experiments were performed to test the efects of silica NPs on the growth of faba bean seedlings and to determine whether the rove beetle Paederus fuscipes is attracted to cotton leafworm‑infested soybean treated with silica NPs. In the feld experiments, silica NPs reduced the populations of all three insect pests and their associated predators, including rove beetles, as the concentration of silica NPs increased. In soybean felds, however, the total number of predators initially increased after applying the lowest concentration. An olfactometer‑based choice test found that rove beetles were more likely to move towards an herbivore‑infested plant treated with silica NPs than to a water‑ treated control, suggesting that silica NPs enhance the attraction of natural enemies via herbivore‑ induced plant volatiles. -

For understanding the ecological balance in the termite gut, detailed knowledge about the composition of the microbial gut ßora is imperative, i.e., the numbers and relative proportions of the microbial taxa and the variability in the microbial composition among different termite colonies and living conditions of termites should be described. Therefore, we isolated and enumerated eight bacterial morphotypes from the gut of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Five morphotypes (three isolates of lactic acid bacteria, isolates of the family Enterobacte- riaceae and isolates belonging to the genus Dysgonomonas) were found frequently in all termite colonies. Three additional morphotypes were found sporadically and were considered to be transient ßora. We compared the proportions of the three lactic acid bacteria isolates and the Enterobacte- riaceae among three different termite colonies. Furthermore, we investigated the shift in proportions of these four major morphotypes depending on whether bacteria were isolated from freshly collected termites or from termites reared in the laboratory under seminatural conditions (in arenas on wood) or artiÞcial conditions (in petri dishes on Þlter paper). -

The role of different bacteria in hydrolysing mycotoxin-glucosides is unknown, and this study therefore investigated fourteen strains of human gut bacteria for their ability to break down masked mycotoxins. Individual bacterial strains were incubated anaerobically with masked mycotoxins (deoxynivalenol-3-β-glucoside, DON-Glc; nivalenol-3-β-glucoside, NIV-Glc; HT-2-β-glucoside, HT-2-Glc; diacetoxyscirpenol-α-glucoside, DAS-Glc), or unconjugated mycotoxins (DON, NIV, HT-2, T-2, and DAS) for up to 48 h. Bacterial growth, hydrolysis of mycotoxin-glucosides and further metabolism of mycotoxins were assessed. -

They are able to survive a range of stresses and hostile environments, including those of extreme temperature (5–65 6C), pH (4.5”10.0) and high NaCl concentration, enabling them to colonize a wide range of niches. Virulence factors of enterococci include the extracellular protein Esp and aggregation substances (Agg), both of which aid in colonization of the host. The nosocomial pathogenicity of enterococci has emerged in recent years, as well as increasing resistance to glycopeptide antibiotics. Understanding the ecology, epidemiology and virulence of Enterococcus speciesisimportant for limiting urinary tract infections, hepatobiliary sepsis, endocarditis, surgical wound infection, bacteraemia and neonatal sepsis, and also stemming the further development of antibiotic resistance.
