Curriculum

Our objective: to make the curriculum at Winton Academy transformational

Winton Academy offers a broad and balanced curriculum. The new National Curriculum provides a sound basis for good practice in the classroom. However, all members of staff recognise the need to enhance its basic requirements in order that our students benefit from their learning experiences. Significant changes have been made in our curriculum and its delivery and we continue to work with staff and students to realise and deliver upon our objective. This is a key element in our commitment to all students in ensuring that they have access to exciting and relevant learning experiences.

Tutor groups are organised in horizontal groupings, meaning each tutor group is able to support students from one specific year group. This should ensure form time in year group focused, with students having an extended opportunity to develop positive relationships with fellow peers in their year group.

English, mathematics, science, ethical studies and physical education are taught throughout the Academy; curriculum team leaders determine the best groups for each student in each year according to the student’s academic ability and learning needs.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) all students are taught in single sex classes and study:

English, mathematics, science, ethical studies, at least one foreign language (French, Spanish, German), history, geography, drama, art, music, design & technology, physical education and spiritual, moral and social and cultural education.

Should any student require special needs support, this is provided, either in the classroom or by small group withdrawal.

In years 10 & 11 all students are required to study the core subjects:

English literature and English language, mathematics, science, ethical studies and physical education. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural education will be delivered through whole day events rather than a weekly timetabled lesson and be a focus for morning tutor time.

In addition, all students have the opportunity to choose from GCSE courses in:

Art, music, media, business studies, geography, history, catering, photography, dance, PE and other courses as they become available.
