Corinna Schäfer Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Sussex September 2017 I hereby declare that this thesis has not been and will not be, submitted in whole or in part to another University for the award of any other degree. Signature: Summary As the first comprehensive work on the German colonial settler newspapers in Africa between 1898 and 1916, this research project explores the development of the settler press, its networks and infrastructure, its contribution to the construction of identities, as well as to the imagination and creation of colonial space. Special attention is given to the newspapers’ relation to Africans, to other imperial powers, and to the German homeland. The research contributes to the understanding of the history of the colonisers and their societies of origin, as well as to the history of the places and people colonised.

  • Murray Bridge Took Its Time to Cross Publishing Barriers
PANPA Bulletin, March 2005, pp.58-59. Murray Bridge took its time to cross publishing barriers By Rod Kirkpatrick With the roll call of Australian newspapers that have reached their 150th birthday growing almost by the month – four have attained that milestone since last May – it is fascinating to find that a significant printing centre such as Murray Bridge in South Australia has had a newspaper for only 70 years. Murray Bridge, on the lower reaches of the Murray River, has had various names over the years: Coninka, Edward’s Crossing, The Turnoff, and Mobilong. Murray Bridge was not gazetted until 1940, but the town was part of Mobilong District Council from 1884 and the town area became a Corporation in 1924, with the outlying areas remaining in the Mobilong council. The name was chosen because the first bridge over the Murray was completed there in 1879. Incidentally, the current bridge, the 734-metre-long Swanport Bridge, was completed precisely 100 years later. Until 1934, Murray Bridge people had to rely on outside newspapers for news of their significant little town. The earliest newspaper in the wider district was the Southern Argus, launched at Port Elliott on March 17, 1866, and published at Strathalbyn since 1868. More significantly, the Mount Barker Courier was established on October 1, 1880, by Charles Morris Russell Dumas. Its coverage of Murray Bridge varied until 1909 when Dumas announced in February that he was going to establish an up-to-date printing and publishing office in Murray Bridge before the end of the month. The Courier began presenting a “Murray Bridge News” section, a widened its scope a little from July 16 that year by labelling it “Murray Bridge and River News”.

  • Early Attempts at Settlement in the Northern Territory
324 EARLY ATTEMPTS AT SETTLEMENT IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY (1824-1870) [By GLENVILLE PIKE, F.R.G.A., Life Member, Royal Historical Society of Queensland.] (Read at a meeting of the Society by Mr. Arthur Laurie on 27 August 1959.) Captain James Cook, regarded as the discoverer of eastern Australia, cannot be claimed as having any con nection with the northern shores of this continent other than in Torres Strait. Rather the honour of discovery must go to any one of several shadowy figures—Portu• guese, Spanish, Dutch and Malay. While the galleons of Portugal and Spain and the cockleshell yachts of the Dutchmen groped their way along an unknown mangrove-fringed coast, the trian gular-sailed praus of the Malays already came down with the north-west monsoon from Java way to fish for beche-de-mer and to trade with the aborigines for tortoiseshell and pearlsheh along the northern fringes of the Great South Land. The Malays called it "Marigi" or "blackfellows' land" and every cape, anchorage, and island from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the Gulf of Joseph Bonaparte, had Malay names. Lieutenant Matthew Flinders, R.N., found part of a fleet of 60 Malay praus near the Wessel Islands, off the north-east tip of Arnhem Land, in 1802. The charts Flinders made are only now, in 1959, being brought up to date by a joint army-navy survey of the Northern Territory coast. Captain Phillip Parker King, R.N., carried on where Flinders left off. In the "Mermaid" and "Bathurst," King sailed the treacherous coral seas, along the Great Barrier Reef and around the Territory coast to the west between 1817 and 1821.

He was elected on 13 October at a board meeting in Wellington, New Zealand, but did not become chairman until last month‘s AGM when Ron Walker stepped down. The election of Corbett followed the announcement in September by directors John B. Fairfax and son Nicholas that they would vote against Walker at the AGM (Australian, 14 October 2009, pp.35, 44, and Fairfax Media statement, 13 October 2009, accessed through corporate website; see ANHG 54.1.1). For the second successive year, Fairfax Media was forced at its AGM to declare a poll for shareholders to consider its remuneration report. It had faced the prospect of a protest vote over a $4.1 million golden parachute paid to former CEO David Kirk. Corporate governance was another common concern of shareholders at the AGM on 10 November. Outgoing chairman Ron Walker and a long-serving director Julia King did not attend.
