History of Badminton
Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney. -

The History of Badminton: Badminton House and Estate lies in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside and is the private home of the 12th Duke and Duchess of Beaufort and the Somerset family. The House is not normally open to the general public, it dates from the 17th century and is set in a beautiful deer park which hosts the world-famous Badminton Horse Trials. The Great Hall at Badminton House is famous for an incident on a rainy day in 1863 when the game of badminton was said to have been invented by friends of the 8th Duke of Beaufort. -

Sport, Politics and Ethnicity: Playing Badminton for Indonesia1
SPORT, POLITICS AND ETHNICITY: PLAYING BADMINTON FOR INDONESIA1 Colin Brown2 Faculty of Media, Society and Culture Curtin University of Technology The scholarly study of sport – in which ‘sports are viewed as cultural products that develop within sociohistorical contexts’3 -- is now well-established. However, the literature suffers from two important and related defects. One of these defects is its geographical focus. As van Bottenburg notes in his study Global Games the scholarly literature on sport: ‘is mainly limited to developments in the Western world. Information on the other continents is at best fragmentary, often collected in wide- ranging surveys’.4 In particular, relatively little has been written on sport and politics in the Asian context. South Asia is perhaps best served, for reasons which are mentioned below, but even here the coverage is slight compared with that of Europe and North America. The second defect is that the sports which have been studied are overwhelmingly those of European/North American origin, and in which peoples from these two traditions are still dominant. Very little has been written on sports where Europeans and Americans are not dominant, or at least major participants. In part, this undoubtedly reflects the cultural and ethnic origins of most sports scholars. But there also seems to be an assumption operating here that the important sports are the 1 This paper was presented to the 15th Biennial Conference of the Asian Studies Association of Australia in Canberra 29 June-2 July 2004. Bijdragen tot de Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde 173 (2017) 53–82 bki brill.com/bki Legacy of the Past Chinese Indonesian Sporting Achievements During the Sukarno Era Taufiq Tanasaldy* School of Humanities, University of Tasmania [email protected] Abstract In contemporary times, Chinese Indonesian participation in sport is primarily associ- ated with badminton. Less well known, however, is the prominent role Chinese Indone- sians played—before the advent of the New Order—on the wider Indonesian sports scene. For many years they maintained an almost absolute domination in weightlifting and basketball, while enjoying prominence in water sports, lawn tennis, table tennis, and further sports disciplines. This article aims to investigate the determinants influ- encing their prominent role on the Indonesian sports scene during those periods. It will examine the colonial roots—the prevailing economic and socio-political system inherent to the Dutch East Indies—that might have provided a foundational basis for their significant performance in later years. The article will also investigate the political environment manifest during the Sukarno era—one that facilitated Chinese Indone- sians’ enthusiastic participation and achievement in sport. The study is based primarily on official documentation, the print media, as well as the testimonies and insights of more than a dozen former Chinese sports champions—now mostly in their seven- ties. Keywords sports history – Chinese Indonesians – colonial legacy – Sukarno era * The author would like to acknowledge the financial support provided by pt Inti Cakra Anugrah (Jakarta). © taufiq tanasaldy, 2017 | doi: 10.1163/22134379-17301003 This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International Public License (cc-by-nc 4.0). -
